The 2000 Census provided information on changing patterns of immigration and internal migration within the United States. As the population shifts to be diverse in more places than ever before, medical offices will need to be ready to meet the needs of a new population of patients. Since more than two-thirds of the counties in our country today have measurable minority populations, even the small community office or clinic will need to be among those making adjustments to reach out to these changing populations.
In today's medical marketplace, patients see themselves as consumers of healthcare with certain customer-service expectations. The medical practice that is indifferent or resistant to these changes is at risk. Having a good understanding of patient-friendly changes can help a practice survive in a changing environment. A patient-friendly office will continue to meet the needs of the patient by adopting this new practice style.
