Redetermination of hydronium perchlorate at 193 and 293 K.

A sample of hydronium perchlorate, H(3)O(+) x ClO(4)(-), crystallized from ethanol at ambient temperature, was found to be orthorhombic (space group Pnma) at both 193 and 293 K, with no phase transition observed in this temperature range. This contrasts with the earlier observation [Nordman (1962). Acta Cryst. 15, 18-23] of a monoclinic phase (space group P2(1)/n) at 193 K for crystals grown at that temperature from perchloric acid. The hydronium and perchlorate ions lie across a mirror plane but it is not possible to define at either temperature a simple description of the H-atom positions due to the three-dimensional tumbling of the hydronium cation.

Polymeric structure of (ethylenediamine)silver(I) 3-nitrobenzoate monohydrate.

In the ternary title compound, catena-poly[[silver(I)-mu-ethylenediamine-kappa(2)N:N'] 3-nitrobenzoate monohydrate], [[Ag(C(2)H(8)N(2))](C(7)H(4)NO(4)) x H(2)O](n), the Ag atom is bicoordinated in a linear configuration by two different N atoms from two symmetry-related ethylenediamine ligands, thus giving linear polymeric chains with an [-Ag-N-C-C-N-](n) backbone running parallel to the a axis. In the crystal packing, these linear chains are interconnected by N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen bonds to form layers parallel to the ab plane.

In both (I) and (II), the steroid nuclei are in cis/trans/cis configurations, with the cyclopentane rings showing conformational flexibility, viz. an envelope conformation in (I) and a twisted conformation in (II). In both compounds, the lactone ring is nearly orthogonal to the cyclopentane ring. The packing of (I) is composed of molecular layers stabilized by five O-H...O hydrogen bonds. In the packing of (II), the molecules are packed into columns by one O-H...O hydrogen bond, and are further interconnected into a three-dimensional network by one O-H...O and three C-H...O interactions.

11-Methyl-12a-phenyl-9a,12a-dihydrophenanthro[9',10':5,6][1,4]dioxino[2,3-d]oxazole and 9a-(10-hydroxyphenanthren-9-yl)-11,12a-diphenyl-9a,12a-dihydrophenanthro[9',10':5,6][1,4]dioxino[2,3-d]oxazole.

In the title compounds, C(24)H(17)NO(3), (I), and C(43)H(27)NO(5), (II), the dioxine ring is not planar and tends toward a boat conformation. The oxazoline ring adopts a twisted conformation in molecule (I) but is essentially planar in molecule (II). The configuration of the dioxine-oxazoline system is determined by the sp(3) state of the two shared atoms. The phenanthrene moiety is nearly coplanar with the dioxine ring, while the phenyl ring is perpendicular to the attached oxazole ring. The triclinic unit cell of (II) contains two crystallographically independent molecules related by a pseudo-inversion centre.

Formation of molecular ladder elements with macrocyclic platforms via linear bifunctional ligands.

Reaction between 4-aminopyridine and a dinuclear zinc(II) component of a Robson macrocyclic ligand has resulted in the formation of a molecular ladder element motif. X-ray single crystal structural analysis indicates that two pyridine rings are assembled at the same direction of the macrocycle, which are placed in a nearly parallel way via pi-pi interactions, forming a concavity structure with a macrocyclic base. It is significantly noted that one hydrogen-bond cycle generated from hydrogen atoms of two amino groups with two perchlorate anions has sustained such an assembly of two 4-aminopyridine species to stand in a face to face pattern through a weak molecular interaction on the macrocyclic platform by one-end coordination bonding. The self-assembly of 4-carboxylic pyridine acid and the same macrocyclic component in the presence of sodium hydroxide has yielded an interesting wheel-like complex. Two macrocyclic dinuclear zinc(II) components have been linked through coordination bonding with two pyridine derivatives situated on the same direction of a macrocycle. X-ray structural results suggest that the compound has a unique sandwich-like structure consisting of two macrocyclic covers with two inversely positioned bridging pyridine carboxylic groups in the middle.

Piperazine-1,4-diium--2,4-dinitrophenolate--water (1/2/2).

In the title 1/2/2 adduct, C(4)H(12)N(2)(2+) x 2C(6)H(3)N(2)O(5)(-) x 2H(2)O, the dication lies on a crystallographic inversion centre and the asymmetric unit also has one anion and one water molecule in general positions. The 2,4-dinitrophenolate anions and the water molecules are linked by two O-H...O and two C-H...O hydrogen bonds to form molecular ribbons, which extend along the b direction. The piperazine dication acts as a donor for bifurcated N-H...O hydrogen bonds with the phenolate O atom and with the O atom of the o-nitro group. Six symmetry-related molecular ribbons are linked to a piperazine dication by N---H.O and C---H.O hydrogen bonds.
