The effect of Padma 28 on selected parameters of humoral and cellular immune reactions in rabbits subjected to experimental atherosclerosis was studied. The drug significantly reduced the size of atherosclerotic plaques in the aorta and restored to a varying extent the immune functions studied. The possible mechanism by which Padma 28 may exert its anti-atherosclerotic action is discussed in the scope of the immunological theory of atherosclerosis.
The magnitude of the emitted to the air dusts and gases, liquid and solid wastes disposal produced by chemical industry is presented. Impact of chemical industry on the environment is discussed. Some hazardous agents, occurring in the work environment, morbidity and sickness absenteeism rates, noted among employees in chemical industry, are considered.
The fundamental premises and toxicological methods used to evaluate exposure to chemicals in the environment have been discussed, with particular regard to the approach and methods for health risk assessment of carcinogens and non-carcinogens. The main disputable problems related to risk assessment and risk estimation have been listed.
Mitochondria are labile objects when isolated from mammalian organs and may undergo rapid changes (aging) in vitro. This work attempts to examine conditions which retard such changes. Isolated rat heart mitochondria were incubated for 180 min in the presence of various substances whose properties might influence the aging process as expressed by changes in oxygen consumption rates. It was found that retardation was greatest with substances which potentially influence reactions involving fatty acids. This effect is discussed in terms of various mechanisms of mitochondrial aging.

For each environmental poison the index of harmfulness was calculated on the basis of quantitative evaluation of the following properties: emission of the substance to the environment (Fi), toxicity (F2), the population exposed (F3), exposure (F4), persistence of the substance in the environment (F5), secondary substances and mixtures (F6), bioaccumulation and biomagnification (F7), and influence on the non-living components of the environment (F8). Increasing numerical values were applied for increasing range or activity of toxins. The numerical values were integrated according to the formula [formula: see text). It was decided that the first three factors possess prior significance for evaluation of harmful environmental effects, the remainder were considered as auxiliary. Substances having the highest indices of harmfulness were selected as priority environmental poisons: sulphur dioxide, dust, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, fluorine, lead, cadmium, nitrogenous fertilizers, pesticides, and carbon monoxide.
New toxicological indices for the quantitative evaluation of ecological hazardous areas are presented. The aggregation method for calculation of a general index of harmfulness is proposed. This method could serve for establishing priorities among areas of ecological hazard.
A group of patients with primary hypothyroidism has been studied, and it is reported that low serum levels of thyroid hormones are accompanied by low plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations. While the correlation between ANP and thyroid hormone levels is strong, no correlation was found between ANP and heart rate or arterial blood pressure. It is suggested that thyroid hormones directly stimulate the release of ANP from atrial cardiocytes.
Increased plasma concentration of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in untreated hyperthyroid patients is reported. A significant positive correlation between the concentration of ANF and serum thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) has been found when hyperthyroid patients and healthy controls were pooled together. The mechanism by which thyroid hormones raise plasma ANF concentration and its relevance to the symptomatology of hyperthyroidism is discussed.
This work focuses on main aspects of a proposed system of chemical safety in Poland. General principles have been formulated, including theoretical guidelines, definitions and functions. Additionally, organizational and legislative structures have been proposed. A basic principal of the system says that each activity related to the application of chemical compounds creates a risk of adverse health and environmental effects. According to the definition adopted, chemical safety means such levels of chemical compounds in the environment, coming from various sources, which ensure that the risk of adverse health effects and other negative effects will not surpass socially acceptable levels. The chemical safety system is aimed at preventing and limiting the risk of undesirable health and environmental effects from chemical compounds. It is proposed that the system be coordinated by the National Coordinating Committee on Chemical Safety. The most urgent task of the Committee would be to draft a law on human health protection against the harmful effects of chemical compounds.
This work shows that an intravenous infusion of atropine increases the concentration of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in the plasma of healthy subjects. The effect is discussed in reference to the heart rate and the role of the autonomic nervous system in the control of ANP secretion by atrial cardiocytes.
The paper discusses principles of the chemical safety system to be introduced in Poland. It is thought that the system should be based on a doctrine comprising theoretical considerations, definitions of concepts and scope of activity. Moreover, the organizational and legal background of the future system was also considered. According to the main principle of the chemical safety system, any activity, involving the use of chemicals gives rise to a risk of adverse health and environmental effects. The numerical value that can be assigned to such risk ranges between 0 and 1. Thus an essential activity related to chemical safety seems to be the determination of a socially acceptable risk. Chemical safety has been defined as an environmental state where the chemical substances of different origin pose either no risk of adverse health and environmental effects or the risk whose level is socially acceptable. The chemical safety system aims at limiting or preventing the risk arising from the use of chemicals. It is suggested that the activities of the future system should be supervised by the National Coordinating Committee for Chemical Safety which would stimulate both the research work on risk assessment and management as well as other activities pertaining to chemical safety.
We present a case of chronic cadmium intoxication caused by a gold dental prosthesis. The first symptoms of the disease appeared 2 years after insertion and gradually intensified over the next 3 years. Analysis of blood and urine samples, as well as parts of the prosthesis, revealed an excessive concentration of cadmium. The prosthesis was removed and the concentration of cadmium gradually returned to normal, with an amelioration of symptoms. This case illustrates the importance of investigating the possibility of intoxication with a heavy metal when symptoms of chronic illness accompany the presence of a prosthesis.

Both animal (rats) experiments and examinations of dyestuff industry workers exposed to chlorobenzene allowed to identify 4-chlorocatechol as one of the major chlorobenzene metabolites. 4-chlorocatecholuria was found to be monophasic with 24 h half-time, which indicates that concentrations are likely to increase in the body with everyday exposure. The 4-chlorocatechol test based on thin-layer chromatography and absorptiometry appeared to be fully useful for exposure evaluation and chlorobenzene poisonings diagnostics.
