Among 73 patients who were admitted to our hospital between 1972 and 1983, 9 died before starting chemotherapy, 29 achieved complete remission (CR) with an initial regimen of induction chemotherapy, while the remaining 35 patients failed to achieve CR with this initial regimen. Patients with high initial WBC counts (greater than 100,000/cmm), old age, temperature (greater than 38 degrees C) and antecedent hematological disorders, were more prone to failure of remission induction therapy. Comparing CR patients and non-CR patients, there seemed to be no difference in sex distribution, initial platelet counts, initial LDH, percentage of blasts in the blood and bone marrow, the incidence of DIC and the regimen used for remission induction. According to Preisler's criteria, remission induction failure cases were further subdivided into various types and the numbers of each type were as follows: Type I (absolute drug resistance) 1, Type II (relative drug resistance) 16, Type III (regeneration failure) 0, Type IV (hypoplastic death) 6 and Type V (early death) 11. Among 18 M1 cases, 8 were Type II or Type V. Four out of 7 M2 cases belonged to Type II and all 3 M3 cases were Type V. Six out of the 35 remission induction failure patients entered CR with the 2nd chemotherapy regimen and 19 patients died during induction treatment with the initial induction regimen. Causes of death were infection (5 cases), bleeding (6 cases), infection and bleeding (3 cases) and organ failure (5 cases).

A gel filtration profile of the plasma of Brown Norway Katholiek (B/N-Ka) rat was compared with those of B/N-Kitasato (B/N-Ki) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. In the chromatograms of B/N-Ki and SD rat plasmas, high-molecular weight (HMW) kininogen was eluted together with pre-kallikrein. In lower molecular weight fractions, there were two kininogens, one of which released kinin by urinary kallikrein, snake venom kininogenase (SVK) and trypsin, and the other released kinin only by trypsin. In the chromatogram of B/N-Ka rat plasma, there was no fraction which released kinin by plasma kallikrein, urinary kallikrein or SVK. However, the kinin-release only by trypsin was found in the lower molecular weight fraction, which corresponds to the third peak of kininogen in the chromatograms of B/N-Ki and SD rat plasmas. These results indicate that B/N-Ka rat plasma is deficient in HMW kininogen, and also deficient in the LMW kininogen susceptible to urinary kallikrein and SVK, but it contains the third kininogen responsive only to trypsin.
This paper describes a method for measuring the temperatures of all regions of an intact leaf by using an infrared scanning thermometer at wavelengths between 8 and 14 micrometers combined with a digital image processing system. Pictures obtained every 2 minutes from leaves of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv Large Russian) plants subjected to increasing water stress showed that water deficit develops first at the margins of leaves, accompanied by stomatal closure and increase in temperature. Finally, the temperature of the entire leaf rises 3 to 5 degrees C above that of nonstressed leaves. When transpiration resumed, it did so first at the leaf margins and these proceeded nonuniformly inward. The results of these experiments indicate that there are significant differences in the temperature and water status of different parts of a leaf. This makes it important to determine causes of such behavior and decide in what part of a leaf the temperature and water status should be measured. The thermo-imaging method can be useful in monitoring short term temperature changes occurring in leaves undergoing water, chilling, and other stresses.

As a mechanical cardiac support, prolonged (over 5 hrs) Veno Arterial Bypass (VAB) with membrane oxygenator was indicated to 13 patients who was profound cardiogenic shock following open heart surgery, among 1700 cases of cardiac surgery (0.8%). In 12 of 13 cases, cardiopulmonary bypass could not be weaned after intracardiac repair, despite maximal pharmacological management with or without IABP support. Another one case was intractable ventricular fibrillation in ICU, two days after operation. Six of 13 patients who were supported by prolonged VAB, survived and discharged from the hospital. In survivors, mean of VAB flow was 900 +/- 265 ml/min/m2, in died 7 cases, mean of VAB flow was 1450 +/- 550 ml/min/m2 (p less than 0.05). The longest duration of VAB in survivors was less than 28 hrs. Improvements of anticoagulation and VAB circuits make it safer to manage prolonged VAB. For profound cardiogenic shock, prolonged VAB is an easy and safe mechanical cardiac support not only in surgical cases but in internal medical cases.
