Antitumor activity of a nitrosourea derivative, CNUA, on murine tumors.

The antitumor activity of a new derivative of nitrosourea, 3-[3-(2-chloroethyl)-3-nitrosoureido]-3-deoxy-D-allose (CNUA), against murine tumors was studied. CNUA showed significant antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia, Lewis lung carcinoma, B-16 melanoma and autochthonous lung tumor induced by 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea. The effect of CNUA, chlorozotocin, and ACNU on the peripheral white blood cell count (WBC) in normal CDF1 mice was examined. The lowest WBC count occurred 3 days after administration at the therapeutic dose level and the decreased value returned to the normal level 7-14 days following administration of CNUA and chlorozotocin. CNUA also exerted a depressive action on both humoral and cell-mediated immune response to sheep red blood cells determined by the serum hemagglutinin titer, plaque-forming cells in the spleen, and delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, while the suppression was almost the same or less than that obtained with chlorozotocin when compared at the dose resulting in similar antitumor activity. These findings suggest that the antitumor activity of CNUA was not at all inferior to those of other nitrosoureas. The bone marrow toxicity was moderate and did not last long.

The effect of changing the maxillomandibular relationship by a bite plane on the habitual mandibular opening and closing movement.

The relationship between the change of afferent information from occlusal contacts and its influence on the jaw muscles was investigated. For this purpose, the following questions were posed and experimental studies designed. If the subject was given habitual occlusal contacts in centric relations with a bite plane, were the habitual mandibular closing and opening movements influenced? Second, was it easier for the subjects to accomplish regular habitual mandibular opening and closing movements, when the bite plane was inserted and removed? From the results it could be concluded that the centric occlusal contacts in centric relation were more physiological for the jaw muscles. In addition, when the new occlusal position was coincident or close to the centric relation, it was easier for the subject to study and acquire the new habitual mandibular opening and closing movement.

Cefotaxime-associated diarrhea and Clostridium difficile.

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial pneumonitis, treated with prednisolone, developed mild colitis due to Clostridium difficile in association with the use of cefotaxime (CTX). Diarrhea was successfully treated with the discontinuation of CTX and initiation of oral vancomycin.

Statistical study on reverberation between two mutually excitatory neuron groups.

The reverberation that occurs between two neuron groups, which have excitatory mono-synaptic random connections with each other can be studied theoretically by employing a model neuron, which expresses well the characters of a real neuron. In this model we consider three effects, which are; the effect of the summation of the excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP) of neurons; the effect of the spontaneous firing of neurons as a noise in groups and the effect of the relative refractory period of neurons. As a result, it is shown that under the effect of the summation of the EPSP of neurons and the effect of the noise, the systematic threshold p theta takes the same value as is observed in practice. The effect of the relative refractory period has been considered in order to explain the low speed of the increase in firing activity, as observed in the reverberating system. It suppresses slightly the speed of the increase in firing activity (pi) in the system. Moreover, the speed can be suppressed by making the refractory effect strong according to the increase of pi. However, the initial increase of pi at a high speed that was observed in the experiment cannot be explained simply by the effect of the refractoriness, even if it were the absolute refractoriness.
