[An epidemiological study of bronchial asthma in the Stara Zagora District].

A cohort of 284 persons is included in the epidemiologic study of bronchial asthma 105 men (36.97%) and 179 women (63.03%), mean age 47 +/- 13 years. The study includes a three-year period (1986-1983). A total of 23 indices are taken into consideration, 12 of which are social and 11 are medico-biological. A greater influence of the social factor "place of work" than that of the factor "residence" is established. The high percentage of persons on a disablement pension (27.72%), concerning mainly persons in active age, raises several problems which should be solved in the region in prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. The highest percentage of the patients are with moderate and severe form of bronchial asthma--82.04% (233) with frequent attacks and 76.06% (216) are with respiratory failure. The index of glucocorticoid dependence (in percentage) leads to the conclusion of inefficient diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the disease in the district of Stara Zagora.

[Case report on the clinical aspects and treatment of stomach ulcers caused by acute reserpine poisoning].

A case is described of a 15 years old girl, taken about 40 tablets of retizid, attempting suicide. Pain in epigastrium and elevated temperature occurred on the second day and ESR quickly reached 50/70 mm. Numerous petechial and not complete erosions were established by fiber gastroscopy as well as ulcers all over the stomach with a bigger circulating in the region of antrum-pylorus. The 30-day treatment at the hospital covering a special diet, infusions of glucose with insulin, alvesin, cerucal and ampicillin during the first 10 days and alcid V throughout the treatment, rapidly eliminated the alterations, normalization of ESR and discharge of the patient as healthy on 38th day after the intoxication. The control examination 6 months later gave no pathological changes. It has been concluded that in those cases, changes in the stomach must be searched most actively, best gastroscopically, that should be treated at a hospital and the patients to be subjected to a follow-up care in the gastroenterological consulting rooms for at least 6 months.

[Experimental and clinical research on the antidote properties of nivalin in acute atropine poisoning].

The anticholinesterase properties of nivalin, its low toxicity and penetration through the blood-liquor barrier make it an adequate agent for the treatment of acute atropine intoxications. Regardless of all that it is not mentioned in our toxicological literature and is not used in the clinical practice. iNivalin in doses 0.25-0.5 mg/100 g body mass was applied experimentally to guinea pigs previously treated with atropine with determined LD100. The animals that survived reached 31.1%. Later, nivalin was subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenous applied, according to a definite schedule--from 0.05 to 0.25 mg/kg body mass, to 20 subjects, aged from 4 to 43 with acute atropine intoxications. A fast and good effect was reported, particularly as regards the manifestations of the CNS, allowing the reduction of the rest of the therapy. No allergic and toxic manifestations were observed. Nivalin is concluded to be an antidote of choice in the treatment of acute intoxications of that type.

[Morphological and ultrastructural changes in the liver of rats on a low-protein diet regimen and in alcoholic intoxication].

The present study aims to clarify some discussion problems on the role of protein deficit in the diet during alcohol action. They carried out studies on rats, part of which received alcohol with whole protein diet, but other part -- low protein diet. The results from the morphological examination showed that lack of proteins in food was of substantial significance and increased pathological changes in liver, due to alcohol effect.

Alcoholic Intoxication↗

[Effect of alcohol on hepatocyte mitochondria].

The authors studied ultrastructural changes of hepatocytes under the effect of alcohol. The greatest changes were revealed in the mitochondria. Physical activity and hypoprotein diet produced a significant influence on the results of alcohol poisoning. The first factor reduced, and the second enhanced the deleterious effect of alcohol.
