Nebraska healthcare system successfully rebrands. Alegent pledges higher standard of care.

Omaha, Neb.-based Alegent Health launched a rebranding effort during its fifth anniversary. Seeking an improved the growth rate, the campaign changed its general health and wellness position to one which stressed its high standard of patient care and its commitment to the community. Part of the campaign's success is attributed to its consistent use, and its incorporation into all Alegent collateral and public relations efforts. The 2000 Alegent Health Annual Report also reinforced the new position.

New names add vitality to Florida, Pennsylvania healthcare providers. University Community Health, Guthrie Health unveil new logos.

This article examines two projects which included new names and logos. University Community Health, St. Petersburg, Fla., is the combination of University Community Hospital and University Community Hospital-Carrollwood, in Tampa, with Sun Coast Hospital and Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. Guthrie Health, Sayre, Pa., is the new not-for-profit corporation formed by Guthrie Healthcare System and Guthrie Clinic, Sayre, Pa. Denver-based Monigle Associates spearheaded both branding campaigns.

Utah healthcare system watches over Olympians and spectators.

For the first time in Olympic history, a single organization was tapped to provide medical services when Intermountain Health Care (IHC), Salt Lake City, was named for the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Utah. IHC, a charitable, community owned, integrated, not-for-profit healthcare system serving patients in Utah and Idaho, spent four years developing and implementing a plan to deliver medical services to both Olympians and spectators. Nearly 350 IHC doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other professionals donated their services for the Olympics without compensation as part of their not-for-profit mission. In addition, about 1,000 IHC employees applied to be general volunteers during the games.

Media dramatize need for center. Oregon friends rally for burn center remodeling cause.

A carefully orchestrated fund-raising and media relations campaign contributed to the opening earlier this year of the new Oregon Burn Center on Legacy Health System's Emanuel Hospital campus, Portland, Ore. The new $5 million center is the only facility of its kind between Sacramento, Calif., Salt Lake City and Seattle. It replaces the original 12-bed facility built in 1973. The expanded center has 16 beds in 16 private rooms, treatment areas designed for children and a host of other state-of-the-art improvements that make the Oregon Burn Center among the nation's finest. Between Legacy's investment of $3 million and contributions from Oregonians, more than $5 million was raised for the new center. Beyond that, annual giving, which amounted to $85,000 in fiscal 2001, is holding steady in 2002.

Ohio hospital PR pros collaborate on crisis communications plan.

Two member hospitals of the Akron Regional Hospital Association (ARHA), Ohio, experienced crisis situations which severely strained their public relations resources. These events were the genesis for the development of a comprehensive plan for sharing public relations resources among 11 member hospitals. The plan details procedures for sharing help in the event of a crisis or specific hospital media event. It identifies three potential situations in which it can be implemented: internal disaster, external disaster, or a specific incident unique to one of the hospitals. No occasion has yet arisen to implement the plan.

'It's happening at Rush' wins top PRSA award. Integrated marketing effort boosts Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's.

An award-winning integrated marketing campaign for Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, showcases the institution's research and developments. Each edition of its 50-part series of print ads features a different case study. These are being promoted through internal communications and also with highly visible collateral materials.

Small stones sets Web site apart. Froedtert Hospital updates provide valuable healthcare information.

Froedtert & Medical College, an academic medical center, has adopted a proactive approach to providing consumers with reliable sources of information. The Milwaukee institution has redesigned its Web site, which first opened in 1995. The new version has simplified the navigation process and added new content. Small Stones, a health resource center, also a brick-and-mortar shop, went online Feb. 1. Online bill paying was launched in May. Pharmacy refill functions are expected to be online this summer.

Research, CME, media relations boost diabetes center's profile.

For Boston's Joslin Diabetes Center, media relations rather than formal advertising is the key to a high-profile image. The communications office targets newspaper, magazine and TV reporters and editors with public service announcements and news about research and clinical care advances. Other successful tools include a high-end quarterly magazine, a fact-filled information kit, disease-specific support programs and a catalog of educational materials.

Mini-medical school enhances hospital's stature in market area.

There is a waiting list for each eight-week session of the "Mini-Medical School" run by Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. The program offers classes on medical subjects to the general public. Its goal is to bring together physicians and people of the community. The faculty members, who hold teaching appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, are as enthusiastic about the program as their students.

Historic Washington, D.C., hospital reopens in new $96 million facility. The George Washington University Hospital attracts fanfare.

A diverse gathering of political leaders, entertainment and sports personalities and government officials attended the grand opening ceremony of George Washington University Hospital's brand-new 371-bed hospital building in Washington, D.C. The new facility was introduced to the Washington community by a series of tours for the media, physicians, nurses, hospital employees and their families.

Hospital Web site 'tops' in Louisiana. Hospital PR, marketing group cites East Jefferson General Hospital.

East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, La., launched a new Web site in October 2001. Its user-friendly home page offers links to hospital services, medical staff, and employer information. Its jobline is a powerful tool for recruitment. The site was awarded the 2002 Pelican Award for Best Consumer Web site by the Louisiana Society for Hospital Public Relations & Marketing.

N.Y. Methodist tops annual reports. Seventeen competitors recognized for excellent products.

NewYork Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., takes the top award for this year's competition. Running close behind are The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, second place; and Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, Pa., third place. While there are considerable differences among these institutions and their approaches to an annual report, they share some common qualities: all are attractive products which meet their objectives. They all produce strong, positive impressions through clear language and imagery. Incidentally, New York Methodist was the very first hospital to submit a report in this year's competition--a factor which played no part in the judging for awards!

HCA Richmond Hospitals' new marketing strategy a winning plan.

HCA Richmond Hospitals, a five-hospital system in Richmond, Va., is positioning itself as a winner in a highly competitive, healthcare-saturated market since overhauling is marketing strategy a little over a year ago. The marketing strategy enables individual hospital to target their own unique constituencies. "Understanding the intricate marketing dynamics of hospital systems is today of critical importance and equal complexity," said Tony Bejamin, principal of Oxygen Advertising Inc., New York, the agency that remodeled HCA Richmond Hospitals' marketing strategy.
