Familial eyebrow diffuse alopecia.

Eyebrows are important structures both cosmetically and functionally. Diffuse alopecia of the eyebrows (sparseness of the eyebrows) may be seen in many acquired or congenital conditions. In this article, a family with diffuse eyebrow alopecia is reported.

Breast milk leptin: its relationship to maternal and infant adiposity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leptin, the product of the obese gene (ob), is synthesized by adipose tissue and contributes to the regulation of energy homeostasis and food intake. Recently, immunoreactive leptin was reported to be present in human milk. The objective was to determine if there was a relation between breast milk leptin concentrations and adiposity in exclusively breast-fed infants. METHODS: Fifty healthy, exclusively breast-fed infants beyond neonatal period, and their mothers were included into the study. Infants whose weight-for-length was above the 90th percentile were defined as obese (n=17), and non-obese if the weight for length between 20-90th percentile (n=33). Anthropometric measurements of infants and mothers were also made and breast milk samples were analyzed for leptin. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between breast milk leptin concentrations of obese and non-obese infants' mothers. Breast milk leptin concentrations were significantly correlated with mothers' body mass index when all subjects analyzed. There was no significant correlation between breast milk leptin concentrations and body mass index of infants. CONCLUSIONS: Leptin concentrations of human milk are not different in the mothers of obese and non-obese infants. These findings suggests that milk-borne leptin has no significant effect on adiposity during infancy.

Pneumoperitoneum: an absolute indication for surgery in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis?: Report of a case.

It is generally agreed that neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and pneumoperitoneum should be treated surgically. We report herein the case of a 3-day-old male newborn with NEC in whom a pneumoperitoneum subsequently developed without any cause found at laparotomy. This case is presented to discuss the nonsurgical management of pneumoperitoneum in selected patients.

Epidermoid cyst of the cecum.

An epidermoid cyst of the cecum is reported in an 8-year-old girl who presented with vague abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound scan showed a mass that was cystic in nature. During operation, a subserosal cystic mass was found in the wall of the cecum and confirmed to be an epidermoid cyst histopathologically. This is the first case of epidermoid cyst of the cecum in children reported in the literature.

Fetal methemoglobinemia: a cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis.

A case of nonimmune hydrops fetalis resulting from fetal methemoglobinemia is presented. A woman with a pregnancy at 17 weeks' gestation was admitted after combustion gas intoxication. Although the mother totally recovered, the fetus showed signs of nonimmune hydrops fetalis at follow-up. Fetal methemoglobin levels were very high.

Periumbilical skin length measurements in the newborn.

Normal limits of periumbilical skin were determined in 304 newborn babies in the first 24 h. Cranial umbilical skin (SD) was 12.36 (3.23) mm and caudal umbilical skin (SD) was 8.76 (3.10) mm on the average. It is recommended that cranial umbilical skin measurement should be included in the examination of dysmorphic neonates, and those with cranial skin length above 18.82 mm (> 2 SD) should be carefully evaluated for Rieger syndrome.

Plasma chromium levels in hypoglycemic preterm, full-term and in intrauterine-growth-retarded babies.

Serum chromium levels of hypoglycemic preterm and full-term babies were investigated. Normoglycemic preterm and full-term babies were selected as the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in serum Cr levels between preterm and full-term, hypoglycemic and normoglycemic, preterm hypoglycemic and preterm normoglycemic, full-term hypoglycemic and full-term normoglycemic babies. Serum Cr levels of intrauterine-growth-retarded babies were relatively low compared to infants appropriate for gestational age. Serum Cr levels of babies with mothers younger than 35 years of age had significantly lower levels than older mothers' babies.
