[Neonatal sepsis].

We noticed coagulase positive staphylococcus is the most common pathogen in the neonatal sepsis in our neonatology unit. We followed 22 cases with neonatal sepsis. Blood cultures revealed coagulase staphylococcus in 9 cases, coagulase negative staphylococcus in 6 cases, Pseudomonas spp. in 5 cases, E. coli in 1 case, Klebsiella spp. in 1 case. The most common symptom was apnea. CRP positivity was noted in 15 cases (68.2%) while increase in immature/total neutrophil ratio was observed in 12 cases (54.5%). However, we detected leukopenia in 2 cases (9.1%). Also, the birthweight of the cases died due to neonatal sepsis were below 2000 gr.

Agenesis of the lung.

Agenesis of the lung is extremely rare. Developmental defects of the lung are usually associated with other congenital malformations. Half of all reported patients die either at birth or within the first 5 yrs of life. We report a case of right lung agenesis with absence of the left kidney, and fusion anomaly between ribs 4 and 5 on the left hemithorax.

[The hyperglycemic effect of N-methylglucamine antimonate (glucantime)].

We applied meglumine antimonate (Glucantime) to 10 albino mice in a dose of 15-30 mg/kg for first three days and then 60 mg/kg for twelve days intramuscularly, and double dose to another 10 mice. No drug was administered to 9 mice which were control group. On 16th day, there were hyperglycemia, parenchymal degeneration and inflammation in liver which were more marked in double dose group. The monitoring of blood glucose of the patients with kala-azar receiving Glucantime, was suggested.

Nifedipine in hypertensive emergencies of children.

We studied the acute antihypertensive effect of sublingually administered nifedipine in 21 patients with different clinical diagnoses. Nifedipine lowered systolic and diastolic BP from 181 +/- 18 and 136 +/- 21 mm Hg to 132 +/- 15 and 98 +/- 17 mm Hg, respectively, after 30 minutes, and produced a slight increase in heart rate. This is the first known study of administration of nifedipine for acute hypertension in children.
