[Characterization of inbred strains of rats by microsatellite analysis].

Microsatellite analysis was applied to identify the inbred rat strains LEW, SHR and WKY. Of a set of seven commercially available primer pairs three pairs were used individually and two times two in duplex polymerase chain reactions (PCR). The products were analyzed in ethidium bromide stained agarose gels. The resulting banding patterns clearly demonstrated the homogeneity within strains and the differences between strains.

Different banding techniques for the study of bovine chromosomes.

The different banding techniques R-, Q-, C-, NOR- and G-banding allow the identification of individual chromosomes in cattle with greater accuracy than with undifferentiated Giemsa staining. These techniques show characteristic bands on each chromosome and are therefore very useful and reliable for the detection of chromosomal abnormalities.

Animals

Disproval of an apparent goat x sheep hybrid.

Samples of whole blood of a Boergoat buck (60,XY), and ewe (54,XX) and her heterosexual twins were cytogenetically examined. The female offspring had hair and seemed to be a cross between the two animals. However, both twins possessed 54 chromosomes, including 6 large submetacentric autosomes, whose R- and G-banding patterns were identical to those of the ewe.

Horse lymphocyte cell synchronization: improved technique for chromosome analysis.

A method using methotrexate for horse lymphocyte cell synchronization and thymidine for incorporation into DNA replication is described. This method provides a powerful technique for the study of chromosomal abnormalities and detailed analysis of chromosomal replication patterns. The determination of horse karyotypes with many similar chromosomes needs a special method which reveals the numerous and informative stages of the cell cycle. Horse lymphocyte cell cultures treated with colcemid (20 min) and harvested 6 hours after the release of the 17 hour-block with methotrexate show the best results for exact identification and analysis of horse chromosomes.

The haematological and cardiac patterns of adaptation of rabbits to 4,500 m simulated altitude and of readaptation to 400 m.

The haemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC) and haematocrit (Hct) of 11 male rabbits were measured at weekly intervals during a 5-week exposure period to hypobaric hypoxia (simulated altitude, 4,500 m) and the following 4 weeks after restoring normoxic conditions in a climatic chamber at constant temperature. RBC showed the slowest response, Hct the fastest during adaptation to hypoxia and readaptation to normoxia. The body weight decreased during the 1st week at hypoxia and remained at a reduced level for 2 weeks after the return to normoxia. In female rabbits exposed up to 43 days to hypoxia the heart ventricle quotient (HVQ) (weights of left ventricle + septum/right ventricle) was determined. There was a gradual decrease of HVQ expressing the development of right heart hypertrophy which was not stabilised within the observation period.
