[Photoperiodic induction of the diapause in the egg phase of the blood-sucking midge, Culicoides pulicaris punctatus Mg. (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae)].
Photoperiodic induction of diapause in C. p. punctatus was studied at a constant (25 degrees) and varying temperature (16 to 18 degrees). Photosensitivity of females and eggs was established. The first and second generations of C. p. punctatus have a photoperiodic reaction of a long-day type. The effect of the light day and temperature on females of different generations is dissimilar. The tendency of diapause is higher in autumn females.
[Administration of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid drug eiferol decreases alcohol motivation in albino rats by elevating the level of antibodies to alcohol dehydrogenase].
The study experimentally assessed the approach proposed by the authors to lower alcohol motivation, which involves enhancement of a specific immunity at the stage of alcoholization when acetaldehydemodified ethanol exchange enzymes [alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)] and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase may be expected to occur. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) drugs enhance the formation of autoantibodies to modified ADH and decrease the activity of ADH in the stomach and liver. At the same time, PUFA drugs can, under certain conditions, produce an anti-alcoholic activity and a positive effect on the psychoemotional status of animals after the ethanol deprivation period.
[The effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the clinico-biochemical indices and kidney nitrogen-excreting function in patients with chronic kidney failure].
The addition of fish oil (20 g for 3 weeks) to diets of 7 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) contributed to correction of metabolic derangement and nitrogen release, to alleviation of clinical symptoms. The most pronounced positive shifts were reported in early CRF. This gives evidence for a preventive value of diets supplemented with fish oil which secure delay of terminal CRF.

[Effect of the photoperiod and temperature on the fertility of different generations of the blood-sucking fly, Culicoides pulicaris punctatus (Ceratopogonidae)].
It was established that the fecundity of females of different generations of C. p. punctatus, which are at the 1st gonotrophic cycle, is unequal. There was noted a decrease of the per cent of realisation of potential fecundity in females of the summer-autumn generation. The dependence of the virtual fecundity on the day length and temperature was studied. The differences in ther effect of these factors on the fecundity of females of the spring-summer and summer-autumn generations were found.

[The vitamin and trace element status of the personnel of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station and of preschool children in the city of Slavutich].
Supply of the Chernobyl NPP staff and Slavutich children with vitamins and minerals has been examined in spring 1992. From 43 to 100% of people have moderate deficiency of vitamin C, B1, B2, B6 and folic acid, 6-61%--deep deficiency of these nutrients. Most of the people have insufficient supply with vitamins in the form of polyhypovitaminosis, i.e. combined deficiency of ascorbic acid and of 2 or 3 vitamins of the B group. Deficiency of 2 vitamins was found in 20% of adults of 3 vitamins in 37%, of 4 vitamins in 29% and of 1 vitamin in 10% of adults. Only 4% of examined adults are sufficiently supplied with all vitamins and none of children. Deficiency of 1 vitamin was found in 11% of children, of 2 vitamins in 15%, of 3 vitamins in 17%, of 4 vitamins in 35%, of 5 vitamins in 20% and of 6 vitamins in 2% of children. Supply of children with all vitamins has been improved when they received combined vitamin-mineral preparation "Duovit" for one month. Universal prophylactic vitaminization by means of administration of ascorbic acid and polyvitamin preparations in doses corresponding to the daily physiological requirement should be recommended as the most reliable, effective and economical measure aimed to improve supply of the population with vitamins.
[Clinico-metabolic effects of fish oil in patients with ischemic heart disease, familial hyperlipoproteinemia and hypertension].
Fifty-five patients with ischemic heart disease, familial hyperlipoproteinemia type IIb and essential hypertension kept anti-atherosclerosis diet incorporating 20 g of ichthyenic oil for 4 weeks. The diet resulted in positive shifts in clinical manifestations, a fall in blood levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, atherogenic coefficient. The clotting time and duration of hemorrhage proved longer. As to fatty acid composition of red cell and platelet membranes, proportion of omega-6 reduced, while the share of omega-3 rose. This may underly inhibited synthesis of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha noted in the examinees.
[The role of diet in the prevention and treatment of precancerous conditions in the risk groups].
The authors studied feasibility of using flavours, particularly, agent M-1 containing basic nutrients of antipromotor action in available form and fish oil containing fatty omega-3 acids as well as natural vitamin E for correction of homeostasis in patients with gastrointestinal precancer. 142 patients at risk to develop gastrointestinal cancer received diets for 6 months by 2-month cycles: M-1 daily in a dose 15-50 g, fish oil in a dose 10-30 ml. Control subjects did not receive the diets. 6 months after the treatment start the test subjects exhibited regression of the disease in 36.6% the cases versus 14.1% in the controls. It is concluded that the above dietetic scheme promotes correction of antioxidant insufficiency and stabilization of cellular membranes in patients with mucosal dysplasia.
[Fibrinolytic and thrombolytic properties of the drug morikrase].
Fibrinolytic and thrombolytic properties of morikrase, a complex of proteinases obtained from hepatopancreatic tissues of king crab (Paralithodes camtschatica), were studied in vivo and in vitro. High fibrinolytic activity and dose-dependent activating properties were detected on standard and heated fibrin plates. The preparation maintained its properties during long-term storage at 4 degrees and 22 degrees C. The thrombolytic activity of the drug, affecting the preformed thrombus, was observed both in vitro and in vivo, in rats with experimental thrombosis. Two-phase alteration of the fibrinolytic system and moderate hypocoagulation were found after intravenous administration of morikrase.
[The wound healing effect of ointment with morikrase].
An ointment containing, 1% morikrase (a complex of proteinases isolated from hepatopancreatic tissues of king crab Paralithodes camtschatica) exhibited the wound healing properties and did not irritate the skin tissues during long-term treatments of rats. Only slight hypocoagulation was observed in intact animals after external application of the ointment. At the same time, the drug caused an increase in fibrinolytic activity in blood of rats with purulent wounds due to activation of the plasminogen activator.
[Autogeny in bloodsucking biting midges of the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)].
The phenomenon of autogenity has been examined by means of different criteria both in nature and in laboratory in 25 blood-sucking species of the genus Culicoides, which were collected in Russia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Kazakhstan during 1979-1990 years. An autogenetic maturation of eggs has been observed in 6 species, and the absence of this phenomenon has been observed in 19 species. It is suggested, that autogenity or non-autogenity is a species characteristic of blood-sucking midges. The processus of autogenetic vitellogenesis takes the time from later pupa (more than 2 days of this stage) to earlier imago (lesser than 2-3 days of this stage).
[Effect of docanol on the status of hemostasis and fibrinolysis systems, as well as lipid spectrum in patients with ischemic heart disease depending on the initial level of fibrinolytic activity].
Forty patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) concurrent with hyperlipidemia were divided into 2 groups according to the baseline fibrinolytic activity. The group with the depressed fibrinolytic system displayed the highest atherogenicity index and levels of cholesterol, low and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and half levels of high density lipoproteins. After 45-day ingestion of docanol, a new Russian food additive containing docosahexanoic and eicosapentaenoic acids there were positive changes in the lipid spectrum in the both groups. The fibrinolytic changes were heterodirectional: activator and plasma activities increased in the group of fibrinolytic depression while in the group of baseline normal fibrinolysis the activity of plasminogen activator fell.
