Neuroendocrine response to clomipramine and desipramine--the evidence of partial determination by heredity and sex.

A single dose of clomipramine, 10 mg i.v., or desipramine, 25 mg i.m., was administered to seven healthy young sibling pairs in a randomized cross-over experiment. The response of serum growth hormone, prolactin and cortisol was measured. The main findings were (1) sex differences in the growth hormone and cortisol response to desipramine and (2) a significant genetic component of the prolactin and cortisol response to desipramine as indicated by significantly (p less than 0.05) lower within-pair than between-pair variance in the sibling pairs but not random pairs of the experimental subjects.

The influence of a steroid hormone and of physical exercise on protein metabolism in rats.

The influence of an anabolic steroid hormone preparation and of a physical exercise training program was studied on the nitrogen and protein metabolism in rats with the help of the 15N tracer technique and the emission spectrometric 15N isotope analysis. For the determination of the dynamic parameters of the protein metabolism graphic (stochastic) and computer aided compartmental methods were compared. Using as a stochastic approach the area-method the animals showed significant differences in the protein turnover parameters under the influence of hormone treatment and (or) physical stress by swimming exercise in comparison to the controls.

[The effect of nutrition on the metabolism of glycine].

It can be concluded on the base of data from literature and of our own results, that the metabolism of glycine is localized mainly in liver tissue. The main catabolic pathway of nutritional glycine proceeds via the glycine-cleavage enzyme, serinehydroxymethyltransferase and serinedehydratase or serine-pyruvate aminotransferase and via serine and pyruvate. The physiological significance of this metabolic pathway is estimated. The catabolism via the C1-pool is limited by the regeneration rate of tetrahydrofolic acid. Other pathways (via glyoxylate, SHEMIN-cycle, aminoacetone cycle) are only of minor significance for the catabolism of glycine originating from food.

[The effect of oral administration of glycine on metabolism].

Dietary supplied glycine resulted in dose-dependent effects on the growth of experimental animals, on diet-induced thermogenesis and on food efficiency. Furthermore it is possible to influence activities of enzymes involved in glycine metabolism and other enzyme activities in liver tissue by increased glycine supply. Simultaneously, changes occurred in amino acid levels in blood, tissues and urine, in the extent of urea excretion and in glycine metabolism. Based on these results no satisfactory explanation can be given concerning the possible biochemical mechanisms of the glycine-induced reduction in food efficiency at present.

The influence of high glycine diets on the activity of glycine-catabolizing enzymes and on glycine catabolism in rats.

Male albino rats were adapted to isocaloric purified diets that differed mainly in their glycine and casein contents. Controls received a 30% casein diet. In experimental diets gelatin or gelatin hydrolysate was substituted for half of the 30% casein. An additional group was fed a glycine-supplemented diet, which corresponded in glycine level to the gelatin diet but in which the protein level was nearly the same as that of the casein control diet. Another group received a 15% casein diet. Rat liver glycine cleavage system, serine hydroxymethyltransferase and serine dehydratase activities were measured. 14CO2 production from the catabolism of 14C-labeled glycine was measured in vivo and in vitro (from isolated hepatocytes). Serine dehydratase and glycine cleavage system activities were higher in animals fed 30% casein diets than in those fed 15% casein diets. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase activity of the cytosolic and mitochondrial fractions was highest when a high glycine diet (glycine administered as pure, protein bound in gelatin or peptide bound in gelatin hydrolysate) was fed. 14CO2 formation from [1-14C]- and [2-14C]glycine both in vivo and in isolated hepatocytes was higher when a high glycine diet was fed than when a casein diet was fed. These results suggest that glycine catabolism is dependent on and adaptable to the glycine content of the diet. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase appears to play a major role in the regulation of glycine degradation via serine and pyruvate.

Analysis of interspecific relationships in mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) in the nests of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780)).

An analysis is presented of a community of mesostigmatid mites from the nests of Clethrionomys glareolus found in the forest biotopes of Vsetínské Beskydy Mts. (North Moravia) throughout all seasons of the year. Main attention was paid to the structure of the nest community, relationships of mites to their host and interspecific relationships in the mites themselves. Primarily cluster and factor analyses based on correlation matrix were used for mathematical assessment. The particular elements of correlation matrix were Spearman's non-parametric correlation coefficients computed from frequencies of species in the nests studied.

A non-stationary model of single evoked EEG activity and its estimation.

There are many different techniques of estimating evoked EEG activity. Each construction of an estimator depends on the model of the process generating the evoked activity. In this paper a model is proposed in which the evoked activity is a transient signal described by the so-called uniformly modulated stochastic process. The usual supposition, that the evoked activity does not depend on the background activity is replaced by the conditional independence of the spontaneous prestimulation and evoked activities. A linear filter with a time varying frequency transfer function is used to construct the estimator of the evoked activity. A statistical relationship between the spontaneous prestimulation and the background activities is considered and the single evoked activity estimator is proposed.

Genetic control of Rous sarcoma regression in inbred lines of chickens.

The fate of tumours induced by PR-RSV-C was investigated in highly inbred chicken lines congenic at the B complex, the major histocompatibility complex of the chicken. The results demonstrated that Rous sarcoma regression in congenic CB and CC lines was controlled by a gene within the B region of the chromosome. Another congenic pair of the WA and WB lines also differed in the ability to regress RSV-induced tumours and a gene within the B complex also appeared to have a significant role in the regression of Rous sarcomas.

[Importance of hormone regulation systems to pork quality].

Separately and simultaneously occurring disorders in thyroid and adrenal functional circuits were recorded from 218 land race pigs, 01 line, in several experiments, in the GDR. No detrimental impact on post mortem pork quality was found to have been caused by disorders in each one of the two circuits separately, but measurable defects were established, following malfunction of both circuits. Also studied were consequences of disorders on the hormonal and cardiovascular systems as well as on fattening and slaughter performance.

[Reliability of oscillography and Doppler sonography in the diagnosis of arterial obstructive disease in comparison with arteriography].

In 81 patients arteriographically by means of the Doppler-method and oscillographically altogether 130 lower extremities were examined. Comparing the two non-invasive methods with the arteriography we have established their good diagnostic possibilities, which on an average were not lower than 84%. Isolated obstructions and stenoses of several arterial segments are to be recognized practically in 100%. With increasing number of lesions the diagnostic possibilities decrease. The two methods supplement themselves very well and are an important functional enrichment of the arteriography. These two together achieve the 90%-level of reliability (covered by the reliability interval of 95%) and are fully sufficient for diagnosing in conservative therapeutic methods. But for a reconstructive intervention is always necessary a complete aorto- and arteriography of the whole extremity.
