[Electron microscopy morphometric analysis of the effect of immobilization stress on the structure of the myocardium in rats belonging to 2 age groups].

13 month-old and 25 month-old Wistar rats were exposed to immobilisation stress and compared with a control group of animals. The most impressive influence was found in mitochondria but there were not any significant changes of myofibrils. The number of mitochondria decreased significantly as well as their relative cytoplasmic volume. Absolute mitochondrial volume increased simultaneously. Difference in age of animals resulted in greater mitochondrial sensibility to stress condition in 25 month-old rats.

Prevalence of ischaemic heart disease risk factors in male populations aged 45-54 years in Warsaw and Bratislava. Part IV: Relationship between dietary habits and IHD risk factors.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between IHD and nutrition. 404 occupationally active men in Warsaw aged 45-54 years, and 634 men in Bratislava were screened. The dietary habits of both populations were evaluated on the basis of their dietary history. Although no significant correlation between the daily frequency of basic meals consumption and the prevalence of hypercholesterolaemia, overweight and hypertension was found, a tendency to higher prevalence of these risk factors among people consuming only 2 meals daily was observed in both populations. In the Bratislava population, which was characterized by a lower frequency of basic meals consumption, higher consumption of meat, meat products and fat, a higher prevalence of overweight, hypercholesterolaemia and hypertension was found. The authors conclude that the influence of unproper dietary habits characteristic of industrialized countries, on the health of their populations cannot be completely neglected.

[Changes in myocardium ultrastructure in a model of hyperalimentation in geese].

Ivage geese were fattened for 6 weeks; 3-5 weeks later, with diminished food intake, they developed degenerative ultrastructural changes of the myocardium: frequent myelin-like bodies, fragmentation and sometimes contractive bundles of myofibrils, lipid droplets, nuclear lobulation and focal cytolysis were observed. Adaptive changes included hypermetabolic mitochondria with many crists, dilated endoplasmic reticulum and plenty of pinocytotic vacuoles in capillary endothelium.

Prevalence of ischaemic heart disease risk factors in male population aged 45-54 years in Warsaw and Bratislava. Part III: Smoking and overweight.

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of such ischaemic heart disease (IHD) risk factors as cigarette smoking and overweight, and the degree of IHD risk in the Polish and Slovak populations. The investigated population consisted of men aged 45-54 years; 2944 of them were from industrial plants in Warsaw, with response rate of 88.4%, and 698 from plants in Bratislava (response rate: 64.5%). 60.4% of the Warsaw group were cigarette smokers, with average daily consumption of 12.7 cigarettes; the respective values in the Bratislava group were lower (46.4%; 9.2 cigarettes). The mean body weight and the prevalence of overweight were higher in Bratislava (79.6 kg; 25.6%) than in Warsaw (77.9 kg; 20.8%). The IHD risk evaluated according to the multilogistic function was higher in Bratislava. It is concluded that the difference in the IHD death rate found in these cities could to a high extent be explained by the difference in the prevalence of risk factors.

[The effect of immobilizing stress on the ultrastructure of the myocardium in rats in different age groups].

The effect of stress from 120 minute - immobilization on myocardium ultrastructure was studied in rats of different age (4, 14, and 26 months) groups. Immobilizing stress caused various ultrastructural changes by adaptation and degeneration in many myocardial cells. The most frequent among them were mitochondrial swelling, widening of sarcoplasmic reticulum and increased nuclear lobation; degenerative changes were especially cytolytic foci and multiplied lipid dorplets. Factor of age was very important. Outstanding adaptation changes (mitochondrial swelling, reticulum dilation) occurred in young rats and was usually reversible, the least conspicuous changes were in adult rats at the age of 14 months, the most conspicuous early degenerative changes were found in old rats at the age of 26 months. The causal mechanisms of changes were discussed mainly by comparing morphological and biochemical findings.

[Changes in myocardial ultrastructure in geese overfed at different altitudes].

In the experiments the method of intensive feeding of geese (hybrid Ivages with steamed maize for a period of 32 days at two different altitudes was used (146 m above sea level and 974 m above sea level). Changes of the ultrastructure of the heart muscle of these animals were investigated. At both levels a marked lipid infiltration of myocardial cells was observed, formation of a large number of myelin-like structures, contractures of myofibril bundles, enhanced lobe formation of nuclei and marked abundance of pinocytic vacuoles in endothelials of capillaries. In geese from the high altitude the extent of fatty infiltration, the number of myelin-like structures and contractures of myofibril bundles was smaller than at the lower altitude. Probably during the more than one-month stay of the geese at the higher altitude as part of adaptation processes a population of "young" smaller mitochondria developed which represented a 10% increment of mitochondria which was confirmed also by morphometric methods.

Prevalence of ischaemic heart disease risk factors in male populations aged 45-54 years in Warsaw and Bratislava. Part I: Hyperlipidaemia.

The differences in mortality and incidence rates of ischaemic heart disease between the Polish and the Czechoslovak population prompted undertaking a study on the differences in risk factors. The presented paper deals with the problem of lipid disturbances. The study in Warsaw covered 2944 males aged 49-54 years from 14 Warsaw factories (response rate--88.4%) whereas the study in Bratislava covered 698 males in the same age group from four Bratislava factories (response rate--64.5%). The mean value of the total cholesterol and triglycerides level as well as the prevalence of elevated cholesterol of triglycerides was found to be higher in Bratislava than in the Warsaw population (p < 0.05). Hyperlipoproteidaemia was found in 24.6% of the studied males in Warsaw and in 43.8% of the Bratislava population (p < 0.05). Pure hypertriglyceridaemia prevailed in both populations. Phenotyping of hyperlipoproteinaemia according to Fredricksen additionally performed in Warsaw indicated the predominance of type IV; types, I, III and V were not found in the studied male group.

Prevalence of ischaemic heart disease risk factors in male populations aged 45-54 years in Warsaw and Bratislava. Part II: Hypertension.

The aim of the study was to determine the distribution of blood pressure and to evaluate the prevalence of hypertension in the Polish and Slovak populations. This report is a continuation of searching for causes of different ischaemic heart disease death rates observed in both compared populations. The studied male population aged 45-54 years consists of 2944 men from Warsaw (response rate 88.4%) and of 698 men from Bratislava's factories (response rate 64.5%). The mean of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the 45-49 years group was significantly higher in Warsaw than in Bratislava although the prevalence of hypertension was similar in both populations in this age-group. In the older group the mean systolic blood pressure was similar in both populations but the mean diastolic pressure and the prevalence of hypertension were higher in Bratislava. The prevalence of hypertension was found to be similar to the rates observed in some other industrialized countries. The authors conclude that the finding of high proportions of hypertension in both populations proves that hypertension control is unsatisfactory, which has been confirmed by the results of additional investigations carried out in Warsaw.
