Significance of radioimmunoassay of human chorionic gonadotropin and alpha fetoprotein in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the testis.

Radioimmunoassays of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) made in 49 patients with nonseminomatous testicular tumors have shown that these investigations make the diagnosis more precise, permit to follow up the dynamics of the course of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment and may help to reveal the presence of otherwise undetectable tumorous metastases. The significance of the these assays is enhanced if the two tumorous proteins are investigated in parallel. The results proved rightly positive in 43 (87.8%) and falsely negative in 6 (12.2%) of the patients. The absence of HCG and AFP production in some of the patients with an active disorder has not as yet been elucidated.

A comparison of developmental dynamics of Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabr.) of different geographic origins and their affection by different microclimate.

Developmental dynamics of D. reticulatus ticks of different geographic origins (NE Poland and SW Slovakia) were investigated and compared. A long-term field experiment was conducted in South Moravia in the zone of thermophilic oak forest. Ticks were studied in two different biotopes: in an open grassy area and in deciduous forest. Differences between the tick populations collected in Poland and Slovakia were observed in the duration of developmental cycle and in the outcome of metamorphosis, depending on biotope. The tick development in the open grassy area was more rapid, but with greater losses. The total production of adults was higher in the population originating from Slovakia.

Feeding of Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabr.) females depending on their age, origins and biotope of survival.

In Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabr., 1794) females originating from Slovakia and Poland the duration of feeding on host and its successful outcome depending on the age, origins of ticks and biotope of their survival was studied. In specimens older than a half year no influence of these factors on the duration of feeding was demonstrated. With increasing age the ability of full engorgement did no diminish. The data obtained indicate the possibility that a higher percentage of females of equal age engorge from the forest biotope than from the meadow biotope.

Ticks of small mammals from the Hindu Kush (Afghanistan).

During the First Czechoslovak expedition to the East Hindu Kush in June-September 1965 a total of 193 hosts belonging to 12 species was examined on the presence of ticks. Specimens of the genera Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus were found. Data and comments are given for the species collected.
