The examination of 27 patients with coronary heart disease and experiments on 42 rabbits showed that intravenous administration of beta-adrenostimulant isoprenaline enhanced the blood level of parathormone and depressed that of calcitonin whereas administration of any beta-adrenoblocker showed contrary results. The patterns of adrenergic system effects on function of the calcium-regulating glands were discussed.

Experiments on rats have shown that administration of a synthetic analog of leuenkephalin at a dose of 100 mg/kg did not change the content of the immunoreactive parathyroid hormone in the blood plasma but removed the parathyroidin stimulating effect on the cAMP concentration in the renal tissue and AP activity in the blood. It is concluded that enkephalins do not influence the secretion and metabolism of the parathyroid hormone but block its peripheral effects and stimulate thyroid C-cell function.

Synergism between parathyroidin and epithalamin (an extract from the cattle epiphyses) with relation to phosphorus metabolism was revealed in experiments on guinea-pigs. Both drugs possessed a hypophosphatemic effect. The influence of epithalamin on calcium metabolism was mediated by changes in parathyroid function. An elevation of the parathyroid hormone in the blood was noted after the administration of epithalamin.

The influence of epithalamine on the blood content of immunoreactive follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones and prolactin was studied in 49 persons of both sexes and albino rats. It was shown that epithalamine promotes an increase in the concentration of the blood hormones if their initial level is lowered and vice versa. The normal hormone content is not changed under one epithalamine injection. The epiphysis-hypophysis relationships are discussed.

Experiments were made on 188 white rats. Immunoreactive aldosterone, sodium and calcium excretion with urine were determined. Administration of the polypeptide drug epithalamine to intact animals promoted sodium excretion reduction, immunoreactive aldosterone elevation in the blood plasma. On the contrary, during epithalamine administration following aldosterone secretion stimulation (by shock reproduction) there was an increase in sodium excretion and a decrease in the aldosterone level. It is concluded that the epiphysis produces a different action on adrenal mineralocorticoids, depending on their initial function.

The effect of parathyroidin, calcium chloride and parathyroidin combined with verapamil (blocking the inclusion of calcium ions into cells) on diuresis and electrolyte excretion with the urine was studied in experiments on dogs. It was shown that after a single intravenous injection of parathyroidin in a dose of 2 U/kg body weight diuresis and natriuresis twice augmented and potassium excretion increased 1.6 times one hour following the drug injection. The intravenous injection of 10% calcium chloride solution or parathyroidin combined with verapamil did not produce such an effect. The mechanism of parathyroid hormone diuretic action is likely to be due to intensified calcium ion inclusion into the renal tubular cells.
In the experimental dogs and healthy humans it was shown that calcium ions promote activation of the adrenal glucocorticoids function, which duration is dependent on the day time. In patients the influence of calcium ions on the blood 11-hydroxycorticosteroid concentration is dependent on the initial steroid level and concentration of injected calcium chloride solution. The infusion of 1% calcium chloride solution exerted a stable effect. Possible mechanisms of the changes observed are discussed.
