Changes in the stria vascularis of the guinea pig due to cis-platinum.

The microscopical and ultramicroscopical changes in the stria vascularis due to cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II (DDP) were studied. Sixteen healthy adult guinea pigs were used for the experiment. A standard dosage DDP (1.5 mg/kg/d) was administered over a period of 5-20 days. A clear degeneration pattern was found (ranging from no changes to cystic degeneration with protrusion of marginal cells followed by loss of marginal cells). DDP seems to be especially toxic for marginal cells in stria vascularis in the guinea pig.

Histopathology of erythromelalgia in thrombocythaemia.

Erythromelalgia always appears to be an expression of thrombocythaemia which may be provoked by intravascular platelet aggregation, because it is relieved by agents interfering with platelet prostaglandin synthesis. Biopsies were taken from affected areas 1-3 weeks after discontinuation of aspirin. At that time arteriolar changes were present: the endothelial cells were often swollen with large nuclei. Narrowing of the lumen occurred by proliferation of smooth muscle cells with vacuolisation and swelling of the cytoplasm and deposition of intercellular material. The internal elastic lamina appeared to be split between the proliferated cells. This gave rise to the appearances of fibromuscular intimal arteriolar proliferation which were often occluded by thrombi of differing age. Ultimately the arterioles become completely fibrosed. These vascular changes are restricted to arterioles, are partly reversible with aspirin treatment and seem to be a characteristic of erythromelalgia.

B-cell markers in malignant B-cell lymphoma with scleroderma-like manifestation.

A case is described of malignant B-cell lymphoma with scleroderma-like manifestation. Using different monoclonals as B-cell markers the tumor appeared to be positive for surface immunoglobulins (SmIg) and for B2-antigen, but negative for intracytoplasmic immunoglobulin (CIg), BA2- and FMC7-antigens. Therefore, the tumor could be determined as a highly differentiated Sm-positive early B-cell type of B-cell lymphoma. In this clinically rare manifestation of cutaneous B-cell lymphoma aspects of the cell morphology and of cellular mediated immunity are briefly discussed.

Pemphigus erythematosus: clinical and histo-immunological studies in two unusual cases.

In two unusual cases of pemphigus, classified as pemphigus erythematosus (PE), the clinical and laboratory data are summarized and discussed. In case I, with characteristic immunologic features of PE, acantholysis was detectable only by the EM-technique. Case II with transitory pemphigus and features of SLE was diagnosed as "probable PE". In this case (case II) concomitant incidence was found of benign thymoma. In addition in both cases the patterns of T-cells and T-cell-subsets in blood and lesional skin are briefly discussed.

Transfusion syphilis, survival of Treponema pallidum in donor blood. I. Report of an orientating study.

The influence of storage at 4 degrees C on the survival of Treponema pallidum in donor blood, artificially infected with treponemes of the virulent Nichols strain was studied. Rabbits were inoculated in each testis with 0.5 ml of the blood-treponeme mixture, containing 5 X 10(5) microorganisms/ml, which was stored for up to 336 h. Under these circumstances, the blood-treponeme mixture appeared to be infectious for up to 96 h of storage, based on the demonstration of T. pallidum and serological findings, using FTA-ABS, TPHA and VDRL tests. The two former tests were found to be equally sensitive in detecting incubating syphilis in the rabbits, the VDRL test was significantly slower in this respect. From the absence of orchitis as well as seroconversion in rabbits, inoculated with blood-treponeme mixtures stored for 120 h or longer periods of time, it is concluded that after 120 h of storage infectivity is lost. The presently found survival time of treponemes in blood between 96 and 120 h of storage is discussed in relation with survival times found by other investigators.

Mercury exanthem as occupational dermatitis.

A patient developed an exanthem after inhalation of mercury vapors. Clinically and histopathologically the exanthem resembled an erythema exudativum multiformelike drug eruption.

Condyloma-like penis carcinoma.

A squamous cell carcinoma is described which showed clinical and histological features of condyloma acuminatum on the glans penis of a 43-year-old man.

Solitary papular lesions on the penis in insufficiently treated early syphilis. A report of two cases.

Two cases of insufficiently treated early syphilis with solitary papular lesions on the penis are described. There seems to be a close resemblance between these cases and descriptions from the Salvarsan era concerning the occurrence of solitary papules located on or near the place of the healed primary syphilitic lesion, after insufficient treatment with Salvarsan. Problems in diagnosing these cases are discussed.
