Rubella in the Russian Federation: epidemiological features and control measures to prevent the congenital rubella syndrome.

A review of the epidemiology of clinical rubella in the Perm region of the Russian Federation from 1979-97 showed that the incidence was about 220 cases per 100,000 population. Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) accounted for 15% of birth defects and for about 3.5 cases of CRS per 1000 live births per year. Surveys of the seroepidemiology of rubella infection revealed that the susceptibility rate among pregnant women (i.e. rubella virus antibody haemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) assay titres < 10) was 16.5%. As serum rubella antibody HAI titres > or = 10 both prevented infection in pregnant women and protected their foetuses, serological testing has been introduced into the routine antenatal services. Pre-existing rubella antibodies were found not to interfere with the immune response to vaccination, so selective immunization was provided to girls approaching puberty and to women of childbearing age. A programme of epidemiological surveillance is being developed to define tactics for the widescale introduction of rubella vaccination.

Influence of detergents on measurement of influenza A virus haemagglutinin content in inactivated influenza vaccine by single radial immunodiffusion.

The influence of ionic, nonionic and amphoteric detergents or surfactants (SA) on determination of influenza A virus haemagglutinin content in the inactivated influenza vaccine by single-radial-immunodiffusion technique has been investigated. It was found that the action of different SA on IIV in SRID test is dependent on the mode of vaccine production, the procedure of virus inactivation and probably also on the specific structure of the antigen tested. Nevertheless, for nearly all SA used in this work the optimal concentrations (largest precipitation area) ranged from 1 to 2%; lower concentrations (except of amphoteric detergents) failed to yield an optimal effect.

[Characteristics of the immune response of children in the Arctic to live measles vaccine].

The intensity of immune response to live measles vaccine varies in children living in different climatic and geographical regions. The least intensive immunogenesis is registered in children living in the Arctic regions. The level of seroconversion in children living in these regions rises in response to measles vaccine containing a 10-fold amount of the virus per immunization dose.

[Clinical evaluation of immunologic reactivity of the organism and immunotherapy in purulent surgical infection].

The reaction of leukocytolysis with microbial standard allergens is found to be more sensitive than the intracutaneous test to detect the bacterial allergy in patients with a purulent surgical infection. The microbial allergization of the organism is followed by a considerable inhibition of the humoral and cell immunity. Immunotherapy must be included in the complex treatment of patients with purulent surgical infection for elimination of the specific sensibilization and improvement of the immune reactivity of the organism.

[Duration of the preservation of postvaccinal immunity against measles and the results of a repeat immunization of children with various initial antibody levels].

The study of the blood sera of vaccinated children carried out by means of the indirect hemagglutination test with the use of dried erythrocytic diagnostic reagents prepared at the Pasteur Institute of Experimental Medicine, revealed that in groups free from measles infection for a long time immunity in children grew lower as the time elapsed since the date of vaccination increased. In 9-12 years antibody titers in the vaccines decreased, the percentage of children with protective titers dropping from 83.5 to 36.3. The revaccination of seronegative children ensured a significant increase in antibody titers in 51.6% of such children with the preservation of protective titers for 1 year (the term of observation). The repeated immunization of seropositive children with initial titers of 1:10 to 1:20 significantly stimulated their increase, lasting for a very short time, in 84.2-89.2% of children. In children with an initial antibody titer of 1:40 short-term seroconversion was detected only in 20-7% of cases, and in those with an initial titer of 1:80 no cases of seroconversion were observed. The data thus obtained suggest that the revaccination of seronegative children should be recommended.

[Antibiotic sensitivity of Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis isolated from patients with the jaundice form of acute hepatitis].

Sensitivity to 12 antibiotics of Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis isolated from patients with acute hepatitis in the jaundice form was studied. It was found that the representatives of Y. enterocolitica markedly differed from the strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis by their sensitivity to penicillins: the MIC for the first was greater than 1600 micrograms/ml and for the latter it was 0.1--3.2 micrograms/ml. Among the aminoglycosides gentamicin proved to be the most active against both species. Its MIC with respect to these organisms was 0.1--3.2 micrograms/ml. The other aminoglycoside antibiotics by their activity levels may be arranged as follows: tobramycin, sisomicin, kanamycin, streptomycin. The isolates showed medium sensitivity to rifampicin and levomycetin. Strain differences with respect to the antibiotic sensitivity were observed in both species. Cultures with multiple drug resistance were detected.

[Safety, antigenic activity, and epidemiologic effectiveness of live mumps vaccine from strain Leningrad-3. I. Reactogenic, allergenic and mutagenic properties of the vaccine and its effect on the body's resistance to intercurrent diseases].

The influence of 3 batches of live parotitis vaccine from strain L-3 on the organism of 2,536 vaccinated children of preschool and junior school age was studied. The injection of this preparation was shown to induce weak and moderate systemic reactions on the average in 0.8% of the children and local hyperemia of the skin in 7.8% of the children during the first 2-4 days. No severe reactions and complications were observed. Parotitis vaccine induced the weak specific and nonspecific allergic transformation of the organism, did not significantly increase the frequency of aberrant metaphases in the lymphocyte culture, did not essentially influence the frequency of intercurrent diseases at the proximate (21 days) and remote (1 year) periods after immunization, did not suppress the intensity of postvaccinal immunity to pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus. Though various batches of the vaccine showed no sharp differences in their influence on the organism, nevertheless postvaccinal reactions were found to be more frequent, and intercurrent diseases occurred more rarely in the children immunized with the batch containing 20,000 HADU50.
