Malignant oncocytoma of the breast.

The histopathological pattern of a malignant oncocytoma of the breast in a 46 year-old woman is described. The electron microscopy of paraffin-embedded tissue revealed an abundance of swollen, vesicular mitochondria and loosely arranged intracytoplasmic microfilaments.

Adenoma

Masked Philadelphia chromosome due to the translocation (1q-;22q +) and small chromosome 19 in a case of acute leukemia.

The case of a 51-year-old female with acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AMMoL) and masked Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosome is reported. The Ph1 resulted from a translocation involving chromosomes 1 and 22, in which a segment of the long arm of one chromosome 1 (1q12----q25) was translocated to the long arm of one chromosome 22 at band 22q11. Additionally, a marker chromosome of unknown origin and deletion of the long arm of one chromosome 19 at band 19q12 were found. The literature on masked Ph1 chromosomes and changes of chromosomes 1 and 19 is briefly summarized.

Chromosome Deletion

Some electron microscopy characteristics of lung immune response in the rats stimulated by respiratory and parenteral ways with pneumococcal suspensions.

Conventional albino rats of either sexes, weighing about 100 grams, were stimulated, one group by inhalation of pulverized suspensions of living type III pneumococci, in 6 exposures, and the second group, by 5 intramusculary injections, one a week, of 0,1 ml, emulision of killed germs, in complete Freund's adjuvant submitted after a week free interval to the inhalation of aerosolized living pneumococci. The tissue fragments sampled at two and respective five weeks after the beginning of the experiment, from central and peripherical sites of lungs, inclusively from a control group, were fixed in glutaraldehide-osmic acid and prepared for electron-microscopical examination. In the thickened, densely cellular alveolar walls there are numerous mature plasma cells, intermediate elements between reticular septal cells and plasmablast and also histiocytic cells which phagocytic inclusions and shape suggests their movement in the interalveolar septa. The swollen free alveolar macrophages contain an increased number of lysosomes and ribosomes. The hyperplastic granular pneumocytes possess enlarged cytosomes excreting osmiophilic material in the air spaces. There are discussed the problems of local plasma cell differentiation, alveolar macrophage physiology and transparietal migration of histiocytes.

Aerosols

Anatomo-pathologic observations on epidemic nephropathy.

Two cases of necropsy and 5 cases of renal biopuncture were studied on the occassion of an epidemic of "hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome" identified in mountainous areas of Transylvania. The prevalent pathogenic process was capillary toxicosis which injured the renal tubules and vessels. The severity of the disease was determined by the phenomena of tubular failure, by the hemorrhagic syndrome and shock.

Adult

The diagnostic value of interpleural lymph node biopsy.

The authors examined biopsies of the interpleural lymph nodes harvested by mediastinoscopy and hilloscopy in 162 patients (133 males and 29 females). The diagnostic efficiency is very high in sarcoidosis, silicosis and in Hodgkin's disease. In sarcoidosis biopsy is able to indicate the evolutive stage of the disease. In malignant lymphogranulomatosis all the observations belonged to type II of nodular sclerosis. In bronchial carcinoma interpleural lymph node biopsy may be practised with diagnostic purposes or in order to check up operability.

Adolescent

Immunomorphological reactivity of the intrapulmonary lymphoid tissue.

Young albino rats were repeatedly stimulated by a pulverized suspension of living pneumococci and others by intramuscular injection of killed microbes emulsified in complete Freund adjuvant. The bronchus associated lymphoid nodules increase in size and number; the proximal nodules contain one more follicle with germinal centers formed of pyroninophilic lymphoblasts and plasma cells at the periphery. The follicular organization and the pyronine - plasma cells differentiation point out the ability of these nodules to elaborate a local immune response to antigenic stimulation.

Animals

Tubular carcinoma of the breast.

Forty-six tubular carcinomas selected from a series of 434 breast cancers, operated by radical mastectomy, were classified in four types: pure tubular carcinoma--one case, and three mixed types of tubular carcinoma in which the tubular structures decrease progressively in favour of a trabecular, poorly differentiated component. The tumors size and regional lymphatic dissemination increased in parallel with this dynamic change of parenchyma. Tubular carcinoma metastasized less frequently and in lower number of axillary lymph nodes as the other types of invasive breast tumors.

Cytochemical detection of estrogen receptors in mammary tumours.

The technical details of a cytochemical method for estrogen receptor identification in mammary tumours are presented and applied in 19 carcinomas and six adenofibromas. A fluorescent estradiol conjugate was used as receptor tracer. From the 19 mammary carcinomas, six were interpreted as estrogen receptor-negative (ER-), two were strongly receptor-positive (ER++) and eleven were moderately estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), having cells with a heterogeneous content of estrogen receptors. In fibroadenomas, the proliferating epithelia were moderately estrogen-receptor positive.

Adenofibroma

The lymphoblastic lymphoma: a clinical and morphological entity, two new cases.

There are reported two new cases of lymphoblastic lymphoma in an 8 and a 12 year-old child respectively. The diagnosis is based on cytological features, similar or identical to those of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the presence of a mediastinal growth and a rapid evolution, and with an early involvement of the bone marrow. The cytohistological pattern was dominated in one case by the proliferation of immature lymphocytes with convoluted nuclei, and in the second one by immature lymphocytes with round nuclei. The T cell origin of these lymphomas and the practical value of their recognition for an early treatment are discussed.

Bone Marrow

Spleen immunomorphologic behaviour in primary and secondary acute bronchopulmonary inflammations of children. Comparative analysis of the lung and hilar-tracheobronchial lymph nodes' reactions.

The spleens sampled at necropsy of 221 children with acute primary and secondary bronchopulmonary inflammations were characterized by the hyperplasia of lymphoid follicles and plasma cells in 37 per cent of the cases, only a few of them with a multilayered organization of follicles, and by lymphoid depletion in 19 per cent of the cases. The remainder presented small unorganized lymphoid follicles of the primary type, some cases being remarkable by their nodules with a "core" of "epithelioid pattern". The pyroninophilic reactions of high intensity were preponderant in bronchopneumonia of the primary type, but unlike the lung and hilar-tracheobronchial lymph nodes, in spleen there were no differences concerning the two value groups of reactions between the primary pneumonia cases with or without associated extrapulmonary inflammations. Immunofluorescence evidenced, in decreasing order, all the three classes of immunoglobulins: IgM, IgG and IgA.
