An immunofluorescent study of lung, hilar lymph nodes and spleen in a series of autopsied cases.

Direct immunofluorescence reactions were performed with conjugated antihuman IgA, IgG, and IgM sera on bronchi, lung, lymph nodes and spleen, sampled at 12-72 h after death in a series of 20 cases submitted to autopsy. The IgA cells were preponderent in the lung where they concentrate preferentially in the bronchial tree, whereas the IgG and IgM cells were found in a relative higher proportion in the pulmonary parenchyma. The most intense lung immunofluorescence reactions were identified in pneumonias; in relation of these types they acquire distinct aspects: a bronchio-peribronchial disposition in bronchopneumonia and an interstitial-perivascular one in plasma cell pneumonitis. The lymph nodes and spleen of the same cases presented mostly IgG cells, but also, in a smaller amount, IgA and IgM plasma cells.

Adolescent↗

Lung parenchyma response of rats stimulated with living pneumococci by respiratory way. A histologic, histochemical and electron microscopic study.

The pulmonary intralobular connective tissue of albino rats stimulated by a pulverized suspension of living pneumococci is the site of an abundant cell proliferation and pyronine-plasma cell reaction, having as molecular substratum enhanced activity of Alk-Ph-ase, ATP-ase, SDH-ase and LDH-ase. Cells in varying degree of plasmacytic differentiation were evidenced electron microscopically at alveolar wall level.

Elastosis in breast carcinoma.

Elastosis, the significant increase of elastic tissue, was identified by histochemical methods in 45 (53.5%) cases of an unselected series of breast cancers. They were all invasive ductal carcinomas with or without tubular differentiation. The highest proportion of tumors with elastosis was found in the "scirrhous" type of carcinomas. Elastosis was preponderantly of the focal variety, periductal and perivenous. The affected ducts were of large calibre, containing a normal, benign hyperplastic or carcinomatous epithelium. There were not observed correlations with the grade of malignancy and the extent of axillary lymph node metastases.

Adenocarcinoma↗

Inclusions of benign nevus cells in the capsule of axillary lymph nodes in three cases of breast cancer.

Three cases of breast carcinoma are reported in which the capsule of an axillary lymph node contained inclusions of benign-appearing nevus cells. The lesions were exclusively limited to the lymph node capsule without involvement of peripheric sinus or parenchyma. In one case, another lymph node presented a metastasis histologically identical to the primary neoplasm. The differential diagnosis with the carcinomatous metastasis and the possible origin of these inclusions are discussed.

Axilla↗

Acid phosphatase activity of RHS in rats stimulated with pneumococci suspensions by respiratory and intramuscular ways.

Young albino rats stimulated by respiratory and parenteral ways with living pneumococci and respectively emulsion of killed germs in complete Freund adjuvant present an enhanced acid phosphatase activity of histiocytes in lung, liver, spleen and lymph nodes, correlated with hyperplasia of the intensely reactive cells, signifying an increased phagocytic capacity of RHS. The difference between the experimental groups, mainly quantitative, are conditioned by the nature of the antigenic material.

Acid Phosphatase↗

Cervical lymph node metastases of thyroid carcinoma - an alternative of the "lateral aberrant thyroid".

The neoplastic thyroid tissue found in the laterocervical lymph nodes of euthyroid patients is associated with an intrathyroid carcinoma identified in the subsequently operated gland, asserting its metastic origin. Eighty percent of the thyroid carcinomas present cervical metastases in a variable number of lymph nodes belonging to more than one topographic group.

Diagnosis, Differential↗

Ultrastructural examination of the spleen after respiratory and general antigenic stimulation.

An ultrastructural study was carried out on the spleen of white rats stimulated repeatedly by respiratory and intramuscular ways with suspensions of living pneumococci and respectively with killed germs in complete Freund adjuvant. A high number of immunoblasts rich in polyribosomes populate the periphery of hypertrophied lymphoid follicles organized in multiple layers. Around the periarteriolar sheaths, mainly in systemically stimulated animals, there were evidenced activated lymphocytes with clear cytoplasms, dispersed monoribosomes and moderately developed mitochondria, concentrated at a cell extremity. Clusters of blastic and mature plasma cells, the cytoplasm of which is almost entirely occupied by rough endoplasmic reticulum, dominate the red pulp structure. Contacts between lymphocytes and histiocytes and an intense activity of macrophages complete the electron microscopic picture of the spleen immune response.

Ovalbumin-induced immunomorphologic reaction of rat lung with emphasis on bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT).

Specific pathogen-free albino rats exposed to a series of 5 intratracheal inoculations of pure ovalbumin presented hyperplasia of main bronchi BALT-aggregates, the lymph and plasma cells infiltrated with immunofluorescent elements extending up to the distal end of the bronchial tree. The most intensely reactive alterations, particularly of perivascular proliferations rich in antibody-containing cells were observed in intramuscularly stimulated rats with ovalbumin emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant. The lung structures of animals subcutaneously stimulated with ovalbumin solution were similar to those of controls.
