Infarct kidney hypertension was induced in congenital athymic nude rats and in their haired normal littermates. In both groups a significant and similar elevation of blood pressure was observed. The mesenteric vessels were studied histologically five, 12 and 20 days after operation. Necrotizing vasculitis with and without perivascular inflammatory reactions was found in mesenteric arteries and arterioles in six out of six athymic and in six out of 11 control rats. In sham operated athymic rats and in haired littermates neither hypertension nor vasculitis was observed. These observations indicate that the thymus play no role in the pathogenesis of acute hypertensive vascular disease.
To elucidate the relationship between bone mineral content (BMC) and the frequency of postmenopausal fractures, we performed an epidemiologic investigation in a representative sample of 70-year-old women. Anamnestic data concerning postmenopausal fractures due to minor trauma were recorded and lateral X-rays of the spine were taken for evaluation of spinal fractures. BMC was measured by 125I photon absorptiometry. The 285 women studied were allocated into quintiles according to their BMC value. In 77 women, there were 131 definite osteoporotic fractures (i.e., spinal crush, and fracture of the hip, proximal humerus, and distal forearm), and in 48 women, there were 162 other non-violent fractures (i.e., spinal wedge and other long bone fractures). The frequencies of osteoporotic fractures varied inversely with the mean BMC values for each quintile (r = 0.959, p less than 0.01). The difference in frequency of osteoporotic fractures between the first and fifth quintiles was highly significant (p less than 0.001). In contrast, other non-violent fractures appeared to be unrelated to BMC. It is concluded that low BMC levels predispose to osteoporotic fractures.

Contact thermography, a non-invasive inexpensive method of investigation for the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis in the lower limb, was compared with conventional ascending phlebography in 69 patients. The results showed a diagnostic sensitivity of 97% and a diagnostic specificity of 50% giving an overall agreement of 73% between the methods. The low diagnostic specificity of thermography was to be expected, since any inflammatory reaction, whatever the cause, will give a rise in the skin-temperature. The high sensitivity shows that thermography is useful as a screening method. In the present material thermography could have prevented 25 per cent of the phlebographies.
Infarcts of the rabbit kidney were experimentally induced in 22 animals by selective left renal arteriography using the genuine foreign bodies present in the contrast media and catheters as damaging agents. Three days later the infarcts were macroscopically located and measured at laparotomy. Three weeks later the infarcts were macroscopically and microscopically investigated. Small infarcts (below 5 mm diameter) now were rendered grossly invisible, and no fibrous scarring of the infarcted area was present. Histologically, the changes varied from slight atrophy to total lack of microscopical parenchymal changes. Greater infarcts (above 5 mm in diameter) showed traditional cicatricial changes, the degree of scarring being dependent of the initial size of the infarct. Thus the small infarcts were found to be able to regenerate and revascularize.
The incidence of spontaneous postmenopausal fractures and their relationship to menopausal age and bone mass were determined in a representative sample of 70-year-old Danish women. Two hundred and eighty-five women (1.2% of all women in that age group) were examined by case history, by 125I photon absorptiometry in both forearms (BMC), by metacarpal index (CA/TA), and by lateral radiographs of the spine. Twenty-four per cent of the participants had sustained single fractures, and 20% multiple fractures. Nineteen per cent had fractures of the lower forearm, 5% of the proximal humerus, 4% of the hip, and 5% crush fractures of the spine. These comprise Group I fractures, the most definite expressions of osteoporosis. The remaining other long bone fractures (7%) and spinal wedge fractures (18%) comprise Group II fractures. Group I cases were characterized by an earlier onset of the menopause and a definite decrease in bone mass, as judged from BMC and CA/TA, as compared with the nonfracture group. Group II cases did not display this distinction. Of Group I cases, those with multifractures differed from those with single fractures by having a five-year earlier occurrence of first fracture, a further decrease in bone mass, and a slightly raised serum alkaline phosphatase level. Serum calcium and phosphate levels were the same in all groups.

A comparative study of sutured colonic anastomoses and anastomoses made by isobutylcyanoacrylate was performed in 60 rats. No difference in the strength of the anastomoses, as expressed by the bursting pressure, was found, and there was no difference in the frequency of adhesions or stenoses, provided the cyanoacrylate was meticulously covered by omentum. Histologic evidence of delayed healing was observed in the cyanoacrylate group; however, this did not seem to reduce the strength of the anastomosis. Provided it is covered with an omental tag, isobutylcyanoacrylate may prove to be a valuable adjunct to conventional suture techniques under special circumstances.
The significance of foreign-body contamination of contrast media, flushing solutions, and angiographic equipment was investigated by selective renal angiography in 32 rabbits. Infarction caused by foreign bodies introduced by the angiographic procedure was frequently demonstrated. As a particulate matter is also injected during human angiography, its effects should be carefully sought.
A rapid method using a large amount of cold Mixobar for radiography of the small bowel without duodenal intubation is presented. The diagnostic value of the method and the transit time were analysed in 203 patients. The quality of the examinations was good. The transit time was reduced compared with conventional methods.
