The studies described in this work have indicated that cholera enterotoxin and its components (cholerogenoid and subunit B) can be detected in amounts of 0.25, 0.28 and 0.6 microgram of protein per 1 ml, respectively, by means of erythrocytes sensitized with gangliozide-containing complex. The conditions for erythrocyte sensitization have been established. The methods of cholerogen titration in the passive hemagglutination test by means of the erythrocytic gangliozide diagnostic reagent and in Craig's skin test have been shown to correlate. Similarly, the passive hemagglutination test is supposed to be suitable for detecting other bacterial toxins interacting with gangliozides.
The possibility of obtaining biologically active cholerogen by extracting it from solid culture media used for the cultivation of vibrios is shown. V. cholerae, strain 569B, cultivated on solid media produced about 3 times more toxin per 1 ml of the culture medium than during the process of its cultivation with the use of liquid culture media. The inculation temperature proved to have no essential influence on the toxin production by vibrios.
A study was made to establish the possibility of using an immune adsorbent based on polyacrylamide gel with the concentration of T = 10% and C = 25% for the purification of cholerogen and antibodies to it. For the isolation of cholera toxin the gamma globulin fraction of antitoxic serum was incorporated into the adsorbent; for obtaining antibodies an adsorbent with partially purified cholerogen was used. Desorption was made with 3 M sodium rhodanide solution. The yield of cholerogen was 41%, and the yield of antibodies was 4.5%. The non-specific sorption of the immune adsorbents was insignificant.

A new method of concentration and purification developed allows to obtain choleragen and choleragenoid preparations, homogeneous in the immunochemical analysis with regard to the culturing of vibrios producing these substances on the available nonsynthetic nutrient medium. Crystalline choleragen and choleragenoid preparations were obtained from highly purified samples. Choleragen possessed enterotoxic and skin premeability factors; choleragenoid shows no biological activity.

The anticoagulants 4-hydrocoumarine and 1,3-indandione derivatives produce a varying action on the formation of a gizzard block in plague-infected fleas. The feeding of fleas on the animals having typical signs of severe intoxication with ratindane, zoocoumarine, and tomorine reduces the time and incidence of gizzard block formation in the fleas. The individuals with blocks retain their high infectability and the development of an infectious process is mainly generalized in rodents. In this connection, the package of eradication measures should involve the concurrent use of insecticides and zoocides which can reduce the size of both rodents and fleas.
The data on the morbidity in infectious diseases in the Chechen Republic in recent years are presented. As revealed from these data, under the conditions of the crisis situation the tendency towards the deterioration of the epidemiological situation began to show from the beginning of the 1990s. The growth of morbidity in some infections was registered, the outbreaks of dangerous infections (cholera, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, typhoid fever) appeared. The armed conflicts led to the disintegration of the sphere of social services of the republic and were accompanied by the destruction of the systems of the life support of the population, the deterioration of the quality of antiepidemic measures and by the practically complete incapacity of the local sanitary and epidemiological service to ensure the realization of measures for epidemiological surveillance, as well as measures for the control of infections and their prophylaxis.
The data characterizing the sanitary and epidemiological state of the population and the groups of persons, forced to quit the place of their permanent residence, on the territory embracing the Nadterechny, Naursky and Shelkovskoi regions of the Chechen Republic (CR) during the period of December 16, 1999, to February 19, 2000. A sharp deterioration of the situation which led to the renewal of hostilities on the whole territory of the CR was accompanied by the disorganization of all vitally important structures, including the systems of health service, sanitary and epidemiological surveilance. The above-mentioned regions of the CR were of great importance in the organization of sanitary-hygienic and antiepidemic measures, as it is on the territories of these regions that the camps with many thousands of persons, forced to move temporarily from Grozny and other regions affected by hostilities, are concentrated. The activity of specialized brigades of the antiepidemic service, working in cooperation with local organs of health service, the State Committee of Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of the Russian Federation and local services of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance, was of great importance for the restoration of the structures and functions of sanitary and antiepidemic organs.
The scheme of the complex microbiological diagnostics of cholera, dysentery, salmonellosis and escherichiosis has been developed. The scheme includes the introduction of material taken from a patient with acute enteric infection into 1% peptone water (pH 8.0), followed by inoculation into Endo medium (pH 7.4-8.0) and the selection of colonies on MC-agar with the subsequent final identification of bacteria with the use of biochemical, serological and genetic methods of investigation. This scheme is proposed for use in bacteriological sections of specialized antiepidemic brigades working on the liquidation of the consequences of emergency situations when the epidemiological safety of the population is threatened.
The use of new diagnostic preparations (magnetic immunosorbents, polyvalent fluorescent immunoglobulins and immunoperoxidase conjugates), as well as the combination of magnetic immunosorbents with the polymerase chain reaction, for the rapid diagnostics of dangerous infectious diseases has been shown to have good prospects. Information on their successful use for laboratory diagnostics in emergency situations is presented.
The aggravation of the epidemiological situation in the North Caucasian region of Russia was shown to be possible in view of the unfavorable conditions in a number of dangerous zoonotic infections in this region. The positive effect of human activities, aimed mainly at obtaining economic advantages, on the natural environment was noted. Only in a number of cases these activities lead to a decrease in the epidemic potential of infections.
In Daghestan in the focus of the flood-plain swamp type 64 persons fell ill with tularemia in 1999. During the epizootological survey 8 Francisella tularensis strains were isolated from vectors and carriers and in 7 samples taken from open water reservoirs, as well as in 1 sample obtained from Ixodes ticks, tularemia antigen was detected. Humans were infected mainly by the transmissive route, as found in 71.8% of patients. 28% of patients were infected through contacts. The disease took mainly a mild course, registered in 95.6% of patients. The disease affected those persons who had not been immunized against tularemia.
