An unusual type of locomotion--backward movements--was revealed in the 101/HY mouse strain characterized by a chromosomal instability and the defect in DNA repair. The backward movements were found in 60% of mice belonging to the population under study. The manifestation of the character was found to vary: it was high in 16% of the animals. No age and sex differences were found. The backward movements in the 101/HY mouse strain were somewhat similar to the peculiarity in locomotion of the neurological hot-foot mouse mutants. The latter had mild anatomical alterations in the cerebellum. No obvious brain pathology was revealed in the 101/HY mice.
Computerized comparisons of phenotypes observed in different kinds of chromosomal imbalance and presented in the form of sparse matrices of traits were made to study the specificity of the indicated phenotypes, the possibility of differential diagnosis of the clinically similar forms, the presence of genetic markers, and the correspondence of the compared phenotypes to syndrome criteria. Stable enough, though variable trait associations characteristic of definite forms of imbalance of chromosomes 4, 5 and 9 were revealed, which were especially manifest when the respective trait frequency profiles were compared. Phenotypic distinction of 9p- and 11q-segmental monosomies was demonstrated and respective "phenotypic nuclei" were isolated. It has been shown that reliability of identification increases when the case to be analyzed is compared with a large enough number of primary descriptions. Analysis of 35 cases of 4p-segmental monosomies allowed the conclusion that Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is associated with deletion within 4 (p14-pter) region.
The paper is concerned with the brief history of the Institute of Medical Genetics, USSR AMS. Recently it has been reorganized to the USR AMS Research Center of Medical Genetics which consists of two Institutes: the Institute of Human Genetics and the Institute of Clinical Genetics. The list of the departments and laboratories of both Institutes, their research programs and projects are summarized. The research programs are under discussion.

Relaxation of a DNA superhelical stress due to the B to A transition induced by trifluoroethanol has been studied by assessing the change of DNA orientation in a flow gradient. Using DNAs of different superhelical densities, a decrease in the winding angle during the B----A shift of DNA was found to be 1.5 degrees per base pair in solution. Accepting the winding angle for B-DNA in solution to be 34.1 degrees, that for A-DNA must have a value of 32.6 degrees which agrees with the X-ray data for A-DNA in the condensed state. The date obtained within the B-A transition interval make it possible to conclude that there is an increase in winding at each B/A junction, which is about 5 degrees per one junction.
Computerized analysis of sparse matrix, based on the list of involved organs, body parts, extremities, function etc. (total item number about 600) was performed for different cytogenetically identified anomalies of human chromosome 4 (35 cases of 4p-, 32 cases of 4p+, 39 cases of 4q-, 39 cases of 4q+; both published and original data were used). For each of the four types of partial aneusomy, 4 specific enough groups of traits were revealed which had been found in 50% of respective patients, at least. Such "nuclei" of traits were highly similar to those given in comprehensive modern manuals. However, 4p- and 4q- could only be classified as strictly enough delineated chromosomal syndromes. The 4(p14-pter) region was found to be the most likely crucial segment for the Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.
Poly[d(G-C)] in a 55% ethanol solution undergoes a transition from the Z form to the B form when the temperature is increased from 20 degrees to 50 degrees C. The enthalpy of the transition, delta HBA = -1.4 kcal/mol, has been determined with a "tie" polyamine which stabilizes the Z conformation. This value has been shown to be practically independent of ionic strength within the range of 5 X 10(-4) M - 2 X 10(-3) M NaCl.

The work presents data of 25 patients with wounds of the heart and pericardium. Clinical diagnostics, tactics and results of treatment are described. Attention is called to the importance of the method of thoracoscopy in determination of the character of injuries. To improve results of the treatment of this group of patients, the work of the emergency aid must use resuscitation-surgical teams, admittance of the patients to specialized departments for thoracal traumas.

The study revealed that after benzene-induced intoxication (CI50) there occurred low-energetic and energetic phase shifts in rats' liver mitochondria. The content of lipid peroxidation products of the above organellas varied analogously. The time following intoxication being longer, higher were the general level of liver mitochondria energetic activity and the content of lipid peroxidation products. The highest level was recorded on the 3d day after benzen-induced intoxication. On the 16th day complete recovery of liver mitochondria was not recorded.
In vivo experiment alkaline polypeptide in kidney was established to have anticoagulant effect and increases the expression of receptors on T lymphocytes in burned patients. In the experiment renalin decreases the percentage of perished animals, normalizes the indices of homeostasis and energy metabolism in animals with the developed Mazugi nephritis. In rats, which received renalin, less proliferation of mesangial cells and the absence of balloon dystrophy was found histologically.
