Ascorbic acid content was assayed in plasma and neutrophils of peripheral blood in 260 patients with virus hepatitis A during acute period of the disease. The data obtained have evidenced C-hypovitaminosis in these patients, that was more pronounced in the winter-spring period, according to the disease severity 300 mg of ascorbic acid for 1.5 g of galascorbin/day have proved to be the most optimal dose for vitamin C deficiency elimination. A significant decrease in T-lymphocyte level and an increase in 0-cell content were recorded in the acute period of virus hepatitis A. Ascorbic acid drugs promoted more rapid recovery of T-lymphocyte content in the peripheral blood that has confirmed the necessity of vitamin C administration in combined pathogenetic therapy of patients with virus hepatitis A.

The microbiological method was used in 168 virus hepatitis patients aged 16-55 years to study the content of unbound vitamin B12 in the blood serum over the time of the disease before administration of cyanocobalamin and in the course of its application in a dose of 100 and 200 micrograms intramuscularly every other day for 3-4 weeks. In the acute stage of the disease, the patients showed an appreciable hypercyanocobalaminemia that correlated well with the disease severity and with the magnitudes of liver function tests. Cyanocobalamin administered to the patients intramuscularly in a dose of 100 micrograms every other day exerted a more remarkable normalizing effect on the level of unbound vitamin B12, bilirubin, the thymol test, aldolase and alanine aminotransferase of the blood as compared to that produced by the drug injected in a dose of 200 micrograms.
The content of free and total pantothenic acid (PA) in the daily urine was studied microbiologically in 55 patients with virus hepatitis. At the height of the disease the excretion of the test vitamin forms with the urine noticeably decreased whatever the disease severity. During reconvalescence PA excretion rose because of the increase diuresis. However, the concentration of the vitamin in the urine did not reach normal. No disorders in PA metabolism were found in patients with hyperbilirubinemia of non-infectious genesis. Unlike normal subjects, oral administration of calcium pantothenate (50 ng) to patients with hepatitis results in a decrease of the excretion of the free form of PA. It is suggested that disorders in PA metabolism in patients with virus hepatitis are manifestations of functional vitamin deficiency which is a consequence of its reduced utilization.
