[Increased vagal tone in adaptation to the effects of continuous stress and termination of cardiac arrhythmias].

It was established in experiments on rats exposed to 5 day stress that 1 day stress resulted in a twofold decreased heart fibrillation threshold (HFT) and 5 day stress resulted in bradycardia and in the restoration of HFT to the control level. The restoration of the heart electric stability was due to an increased vagal tone because atropine eliminated the bradycardia and reduced HFT again. Adaptation to continuous 5 day stress increased 3-7-fold the heart resistance to ischemic and reperfusion arrhythmias. This protective effect was completely abolished with atropine. Thus adaptation to continuous mild stress has a potent antiarrhythmic effect which occurs due to the increased vagal tone.

[Principles and technics of inguinal herniotomy].

The causes of recurrences after operation for inguinal hernia are discussed, on basis of which the principles and techniques of inguinal herniotomy are substantiated. The article shows the results of operations in 1,734 patients with various types of inguinal hernia, 6.99% had a recurrence (4.6% of patients with simple oblique and 18.75 with complicated hernias). Hernioplasty by an external graft of the external oblique muscle of the abdomen, the techniques proposed by the author, produced the best results with recurrences encountered in an average of 2.29% of cases.

[Immediate and late results of pancreatoduodenal resection].

Under analysis were results of 22 pancreatoduodenal resections when the Wirsung duct was drained outside. Giving up the previously used pancreaticojejunal+ anastomosis improved the immediate outcomes of the operative treatment although 5 patients died during the nearest period (within 12 days): three of them died of pancreonecrosis. Twelve patients were followed up, 7 of them died, 3 of the rest 5 patients had satisfactory results, 2 patients had good results.

[Errors, risks and complications in the diagnosis and treatment of acute suppurative pelviorectal paraproctitis].

Under analysis were the course of acute pelviorectal paraproctitis in 39 patients, diagnostic errors and complications and resulting problems in cases of late medical consultation and tardy operative intervention. The correct diagnosis was made but in 19 patients in operation for purulent leaks. In 20 patients the disease was not diagnosed and treatment was limited by opening the purulent abscesses.

Mechanism of methionine-enkephalin modulation of glutamatergic transmission in the rat striatum.

The effect of methionine-enkephalin (Met-Enk) on responses of rat brain neostriatum neurones to microiontophoretic application of glutamate was studied in experiments with extracellular recording of spike activity. Met-Enk administered by microiontophoresis was shown to depress the glutamate-induced responses. In parallel experiments with synaptic membranes isolated from the striatum it was shown that Met-Enk reduces specific binding of glutamate. Analysis of binding curves suggests that the reduced [3H]glutamate binding in the rat striatum membranes was due to decreased binding sites, whereas binding affinity was not changed. The data obtained show that the depressive effect of Met-Enk may be due to the inhibitory influence of the peptide on glutamate binding to its postsynaptic receptors.

[Circulation of tissue thromboplastin in the blood].

Tissue thromboplastin injected i.v. in the form of microsomal fraction of the aorta intima was rapidly eliminated from the blood flow but did not enter into the lymph in any considerable amount. The disintegration products of the microsomal fraction of the aorta intima are released into the blood flow mostly within 5 days as revealed by the 5'-nucleotidase activity.
