[Role of sex hormones in the development of atherogenic dyslipoproteinemia in boys of pubertal age].

Interrelationships of hypercholesterolemia (HCS), hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) or hypo-alpha-cholesterolemia (hypo-CS HDL) and the blood levels of sex hormones were investigated in boys aged 14-15 to detect variations in the levels of sex hormones to define groups of adolescents at the highest risk of developing atherogenic dyslipoproteinemia (DLP). A conclusion has been made that HCS and hypo-CS HDL development is associated with changes in the blood levels of testosterone and estradiol, and a low blood level of T in HTG is of secondary origin with regard to the development of this type of DLP.

[The use of a radioimmunologic method of analysis of 11-deoxycortisol for the evaluation of the function of the pituitary-adrenal cortex system during the metopirone test].

A radioimmunoassay of II-deoxycortisol in human and animal blood plasma was developed. The antiserum used in the method was prepared against a conjugate of II-deoxycortisol-3(0-carboxymethyloxime) and bovine serum albumin. Specificity of the antiserum was determined in cross reactions using 32 steroids. High specificity of the antiserum allowed to determine II-deoxycortisol without preliminary chromatographic isolation. Sensitivity of the method enabled to detect 25 pg of II-deoxycortisol. The intra- and interassay variations were less than 10% and 15%, respectively. The method was used for evaluation of hypophysis-adrenal cortex system functions under the conditions of metopirone test.

[Comparative characteristics of corticosteroid metabolism in lower simians and man].

Corticosteroid metabolism has been investigated in Macaca mulatta, Papio hamadryas, Cercopithecus aethiops, Erithrocebus patas and man. Similar character of corticosteroid metabolism in monkeys and man was found. Significant interspecific differences with respect to quatitative and qualitative parameters of the metabolism of steroid hormones were found. In this respect M. mulatta and P. hamadryas are most similar to man as compared with other monkeys. These two species may be used as an adequate model in studies on human cortico-adrenal system.

[Diurnal and seasonal variations in the plasma levels of cortisol and its precursors in Macaca mulatta].

The presence of circadian and seasonal rhythms of cortisol, 11-desoxycortisol, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone and 17 alpha-hydroxypregnenolone in the blood plasma of rhesus monkeys was found by the radioimmunological technique. The circadian rhythm was characterized by the highest content of all the steroids early in the morning followed by its decrease to the minimum in the late evening. The time-course of the precursor content was in good agreement with the hormonal level throughout 24 hours. The circadian rhythm pattern did not depend on the season, though the average diurnal concentrations varied considerably, being the highest in spring. Possible mechanisms of circadian and seasonal rhythms of the adrenal gland activity are discussed.
