[The classification of diseases of the temporomandibular joint].

There were 2040 patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases in the investigation including clinical, physiological, X-ray methods of research, contrast arthrotomography, computer arthrotomography and magnetic resonance tomography. The changes of structure in different lesions were estimated. The result of received data was elaboration of classification of TMJ internal derangements with estimation of clinical forms in according with structural changes and characteristics of syndromes.

[New endoprostheses for the condylar process of Russian manufacture].

Experience gained in repair of the mandibular condylar processes with titanium endoprostheses in 6 patients (8 endoprostheses) is presented. The defects were due to improperly healing fractures, ankylosis of the temporomandibular processes, and cancer. Two variants of endoprostheses differing by the fixing device are proposed. One variant is intended for replacement of defects of the condylar process only, the other permits the use of various titanium constructions to replace bone tissue defects in the branch, angle, and body of the jaw after its resection. Good immediate and late results (followed up for up to 14 months) demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

[A modified method for the surgical treatment of patients with maxillary retro- and micrognathism].

A method of surgical treatment of patients with upper retro- and micrognathia is proposed, consisting in improving the fixation of osteotomied maxillary complex. Implantation of carbonic ceramics behind the maxillary tubercles and osteosynthesis of bone fragments with titanium miniplates helps do without prolonged intermaxillary fixation and permits exercise in the early postoperative period, thus cutting down the invalidity period. Analysis of the results attained in 14 patients showed no relapses of maxillary deformation and a stable functional and esthetic effect.

[Congenital craniofacial pathology].

The possibility of using compact nonresorbed hydroxyapatite ceramics as synthetic bone plastic materials is discussed. Results of follow-up of 11 patients with congenital and posttraumatic deformations of the craniofacial skeleton are analyzed, to whom hydroxyapatite-based ceramic blocks were implanted for both contour plasty and for repair of bone defects. Methods of the operations with hydroxyapatite-based implants and titanium devices for fixing bone fragments and ceramic blocks are described.

[The use of titanium plates and endoprostheses for the mandibular condyles in reconstructive surgery of the mandible].

Potentialities of titanium plates and endoprostheses of the condyle processes in replacement of the postoperative defects of mandibular bone tissue are discussed. A recently developed Russian kit of titanium plates and instruments and specificities of plasty to repair bone defects using this kit are described. The results of surgical repair in 5 patients subjected to resection of the mandible with exarticulation for tumors or osteomyelitis aftereffects were good: the oval of the face and mandibular function were repaired.

[Identification and expression of plasmid genes participating in the synthesis of microcin C51].

A structural gene of heptapeptide, which is a component of the microcin C51 molecule, was identified by hybridization of plasmid DNA fragments and a mixture of synthesized oligonucleotides with the sequence corresponding to that of amino acids in the peptide. Sequence analysis of the structural gene of microcin peptide and its promoter region was performed. The data obtained indicate that the peptide of microcin C51 is synthesized on ribosomes. Four polypeptides of 67, 39, 16, and 14 kDa were identified using the system of minicells. These polypeptides are specified by a DNA fragment responsible for microcin synthesis and immunity in a producer cell. Apparently, three of these polypeptides with molecular masses of 67, 39, and 16 kDa are responsible for microcin production and immunity. The 67 kDa polypeptide is involved in the expression of immunity to microcin and, probably, in microcin production.

[A rare case of a preauricular fistula].

A female patient with a preotic fistula caused by a defect in the development of the first branchial arch is described. Repeated surgeries for lateral fistula of the neck brought no success. The pathogenesis of the defect and difficulties in its diagnosis are discussed; the authors claim that fistulography with contrast agents may be effective. Histologic verification is needed in all the cases.

[Cloning and analysis of genetic determinants determining the production of microcin B2 and B27].

Cloning of plasmid genes for the synthesis of two peptide broad-spectrum antibiotics-microcins B2 and B27- and for host cell immunity to their action was performed. Recombinant plasmids containing these genes were designated pBE108 and pVB27, respectively. Deletional derivatives of plasmid pBE108 and mutant plasmids were obtained via transposon Tn5 insertions, which did not determine production of microcin B2 and immunity to it. Phenotypic study and physical mapping of these plasmids demonstrated that a 4.2-kb DNA fragment is responsible for B2 microcin production; immunity is provided by a 1.4-kb DNA fragment. A 5-kb DNA fragment is necessary for microcin B27 synthesis and expression of immunity to its action. Homology between these fragments and with plasmid DNA for the synthesis of microcin B17 and immunity to it was found. Homology between plasmid genes determining synthesis of type B and C microcins and host cell immunity to them was not observed. The production of B27 microcin is controlled by the product of the ompR gene; B2 microcin synthesis does not depend on this product. The mutations recA and lexA increase the susceptibility of Escherichia coli cells to the action of microcins B2 and B27 but not microcin C51.
