[Table method of component partition of phenotypic dispersion for identifying the X chromosome effect based on correlations between relatives].

The tables are proposed which allow to ease and to unificate component variance partitioning based on the "least squares method" in the case of sex-linked genes effect. This approach is directed to partial solving of tasks when the given correlations do not allow the complete component partition. Variants are considered for additive gonosomic variance identification, for additive and dominant autosomic variances and common environmental components for twins. To use these tables, the existence of correlations among twins or offspring-parent and siblings discriminated by sex is needed.

[Genotypic specificity of schizophrenic psychoses].

A total of 610 probands with a disease manifestation in childhood, middle and old age and their families were examined by the clinico-genealogical method. The results allowed conclusions that (1) there is an undoubted genetic relationship between schizophrenia of childhood, middle and old age; and that (2) among the closest relatives in families of the probands there is no significant (in comparison to the general population) accumulation of non-schizophrenic pathology. The latter indicates a high genotypic specificity of schizophrenia.

[Possible role of genetic factors in increasing the serum neurotropic activity of schizophrenic patients].

The authors studied the accumulation of individuals with an increased neurotropic blood serum activity among the relatives of schizophrenic patients. In order to evaluate the degree and character of the genetical determination of the biological indices 2 independent approaches were used: the method of a sequential search of genetical significant threshold values of signs (within the framework of a poligenic Falkoner-Edwards model) and the method of a partition of the total phenotypic variance into main compounds on the basis of intrafamilial correlations. It was demonstrated that the studied signs are characterized by a very high degree of a genetical determination. It is assumed that the small amount of specific loci (major genes) with the effect of intraloci dominance or intraloci epistatic interaction are responsible for the given biological marker.

[Role of genetic factors in increasing the serum lactate dehydrogenase activity of schizophrenic patients].

To elucidate the role of genetic factors in the increase of the blood serum LDH activity in schizophrenics', there have been studied 103 patients, 97 first degree nonpsychotic relatives, 58 healthy people and 32 pairs of likesex MZ and DZ twins (schizophrenics and normals). A correlation between the enzyme activity in the probands and their relatives is marked. With the aid of a quantitative estimation of the degree of genetic determination of the studied characteristic and special and twin methods the authors obtained the results fitting the hypothesis of additive polygenic inheritance with threshold manifestation.

[Role of clinical and pharmacokinetic parameters in predicting the effectiveness of lithium salts in patients with affective psychoses].

Prophylactic treatment with common preparations of lithium carbonate and in its retarded form was given to 44 patients. The studies demonstrated an inverse correlation between the level of negative changes in the patients and the effect of treatment. The use of different methods of mathematical models demonstrated that in the group of patients who received lithium carbonate the most informative was the index of the half-life period and the period of half-elimination of lithium. It was demonstrated that the higher the indices, the better the effect of treatment. In administration of retarded lithium the most informative was the integral index of elimination of the preparation from the organism (an inverse correlation with the effectiveness of therapy).

[Genetico-statistical analysis of multiple birth factors in man. III. Component analysis of multiple birth factors].

Based on the component analysis of correlation matrices for five indicies (parents' age by the moment of twin birth, the number of proband's pregnancy, the beginning of mother's coitus and menarche) characterizing four specified family groups (MZ and DZ load multiple birth and MZ and DZ sporadic multiple birth) at least 6 independent trends of multiple birth factors influence have been revealed. Gases of burdened and sporadic multiple birth turned out to differ in some of the specific trends. At the same time while cases of MZ and DZ load multiple birth differ in some of the trends, they appear to be much more similar to one another than those of MZ and DZ sporadic multiple birth. The data obtained make it possible to assert that first, according to the mechanism of the appearance, there exist at least four main multiple birth groups, specified above, and second, there are multiple birth factors being both common to all groups and specific to each of them separately. At this some of the defined factors influence mainly as implementing hereditary determined trend to multiple burth, while the others in the absence of predisposing genotype perform apparently as casual. The present study data confirm the concept, formed on the basis of genealogical analysis, that genetical factors involved in the determination of MZ and DZ multiple birth are of definitely common character. In addition to that the results of the study make it possible to conclude that multiple aproach in the statistical analysis of quantitative characteristics (multiple birth factors in the present case) is extremely sensitive and results in non-routine conclusions the effects of which can be directly changed.

[Genetic-statistical analysis of multiple births in humans. I. Genetic analysis of predisposition to multiple birth].

Genetico-statistical analysis was made to check various hypotheses of the tendency to multiple birth inheritance. The material involved was comprised of 115 MZ and 228 DZ twin families burdened by recurrent cases of multiple births in their genealogy. Test data included 516 single birth probands, 5 from which had twins among sibs; this results in p = 0,97% for the evaluation of population frequency of the "affected" couples having twins). Vienberg proband method was applied to check monogenous-autosomal model and Edward & Smith approximating formulae to check additive-polygenous model with liminal results (manifestation). It is shown: 1) that the degree of genetical determination of MZ and DZ twinning is approximately the same for both multiple birth types; H-61 and 53% respectively; 2) in MZ twinning both mother's and father's genotypes perform as multiple birth factors; H-76% for the group of mother's sisters and 64% for that of father's brothers; 3) in case of DZ twinning mother's genotype is much more valid as a multiple birth factor as compared to the father's one; H-68% for the group of mother's sisters and H-25% for father's brothers; 4) at least some genetical factors, involved in multiple birth determination, are common for MZ and DZ twins; the rate of DZ twinning (of different sexes) among sibs of parents of MZ twins is reliable and more than 5-fold increases that in common population. It is suggested that the contradiction of literary data on multiple birth genetics is due to unadequate methods in many early investigations: calculations have been carried out on the basis of twin birth rate, and not on the rate of "affected" (couples having twins); differential Veinberg's method has been used, which is adequate in populational analysis and is unsuitable for genealogical studies for the estimation of MZ and DZ twinning frequency; cases of "sporadic" multiple birth have not been excluded from summary family material. On the basis of the authors' and literary data it is suggested also that the number of main genetic factors determining the tendency to multiple births is more than 2 (probably 3) and does not exceed 5, and their interaction approximated by oligenic-complementary model, which does not exclude the presence of genocopying loci in a total system.

[Inheritance of human finger and palm dermatoglyphic characteristics].

The degree of genetic determination of 25 quantitative dermatoglyphic characteristics has been studied on family: twin material: 45 pairs of MZ and 75 single-sex DZ twins; and 53 single-sex "parent-child" pairs. Approximating formulae were used to estimate main components of phenotypic variance due to additive interaction of genetic factors, to non-linear effects (intralocus dominance) and to the effect of total-familiar and random environmental factors. All the finger dermatoglyphic characteristics studied had a high degree of genetic determination (G greater than 0,80), and for most of them the contribution into the large variance of intralocus dominance effects was comparable with that of additive gene interaction, included in the determination of these characters. There are some palm dermatoglyphic characteristics ("ad" distance "cd" comb counting, "bad", "adt" and "cda" angles), which degree of genetic determination is low (G less than 0,35). At least ten quantitative finger and palm dermatogliphic characteristics with a high degree of genetic determination can be used for special studies in frames of multidimentional genetical analysis, including determination of twin zygosity type. Earlier described "indices" (using twin data) of relative role of genetic and environment factors in the determination of populational variability of quantitative characters are considered. None of them is shown to be a reliable estimate of the coefficient of genetic character determination. The use of these indices in practical studies can result in wrong conclusions on the degree and the character of genetic determination of quantitative characters.

[Use of the integral parameter of dermatoglyphic differences for determining the type of zygosity of twins].

A method is described increasing the reliability of twin zygosity diagnosis in cases when the possibility of using a large number of mendelian markers is restricted. The method is based on the determination of generalized index of dermatoglyphic differences between members of twin pair for 18 characteris of finger and palm dermatoglyphics and on principles of multivariate genetic analysis, which is worked out to determine the degree of heritability of multifactorial character and to study the structure of hereditary predisposition to multifactorial diseases. The efficiency of the method with respect to determinating the type of twin zygosity is approximately equivalent to the efficiency of using 5--6 mendelian marker systems.
