[The mechanism of the disorder in the cytoarchitectonics and structural organization of the erythrocyte membranes in gestoses].

Mechanisms underlying gestosis-associated changes in architectonics of the erythrocytes and structural pattern of their membranes have been identified. The changes were related to the rates of lipid peroxidation in the erythrocyte membranes. Phospholipase A2 activation and tissue hypoxia were identified as important determinants of cell membrane abnormalities in progressive and moderate-to-severe nephropathy.

[Leukinferon in the combined therapy of infection in neonates and infants].

Leikinferon was used in multimodality treatment of sepsis caused by gram-negative microorganisms and staphylococci in 33 neonates and infants. It was injected in a dose of 10,000 IU and was given in courses of 4-6 intramuscular administrations with an interval of 48 hours. The treatment with leikinferon promoted a steady improvement of the clinical status, associated with pronounced activation of the interferon system and neutrophilic phagocytosis. The use of the drug in septic shock did not produce any noticeable affect. Fever was the only side effect induced by drug administration. In some children, the temperature rose by 1-1.5 degrees C. It returned to normal after 10-14 hours.

[Interferon preparations in the treatment of acute and chronic forms of hepatitis B].

The therapeutic efficacy of human leucocytic alpha-interferon and combiferon produced in the N.F. Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, was assessed in 27 patients with different types of hepatitis B and in 30 controls. A marked clinical effect was noted in therapy of acute types of hepatitis B: the improvement of clinical and immunological indices, the reduction of the duration of HBs-antigenemia. The treatment of chronic types was effective in 5 out of 8 patients. A therapeutic scheme for acute and chronic types of hepatitis B was given.

[Effect of an interferon preparation on increasing bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics].

Under the effect of human leukocytic alpha-interferon-II for injections there was observed an increase in sensitivity of bacteria to benzylpenicillin, ristomycin, novobiocin, streptomycin, kanamycin, monomycin and erythromycin. A higher antibacterial effect of the penicillin and erythromycin was recorded only with respect to initially resistant strains of staphylococci. For the antibiotic resistant strains of staphylococci the MICs of the penicillin and erythromycin decreased on the average 17.8 and 208 times (p less than 0.001) respectively. The interferon had no effect on sensitivity of bacteria to chloramphenicol.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

[Partial purification and various characteristics of antibacterial factor in preparations of interferon].

A factor showing antibacterial activity was isolated from human alpha-interferon native preparations with affinity chromatography on immobilized cells of staphylococci. The antibacterial activity was found to be stable to the effect of nucleases and heating. Exposure to trypsin activated the antibacterial activity while exposure to pepsin somewhat destroyed it. Growth of the staphylococcal culture resistant to antibiotics was inhibited by the factor.

[Effect of different types of interferon on the natural cellular cytotoxicity of lung cancer patients].

The natural killer cell cytotoxicity was studied in the 4 hour and 18 hour cytotoxic reaction with cultured human tumour cells (K562 and lung adenocarcinoma) labelled by 51Cr. The natural killer cell activity of cancer patients was lowered only in 4 hour cytotoxic reaction with target cells K562. The natural and recombinant leucocyte interferon and natural immune interferon stimulated in vitro the activity of natural killer cells in most of the experiments (80.5 %) in the 4 hour and 18 hour cytotoxic reactions both from patients with initially lowered level, and with normal or high level of cytotoxic action of natural killer cells. In some experiments interferon preparations did not significantly influence the lysis of tumour cells or even suppressed the activity of effector cells. The heterogeneity of the population of natural killer cells and different immunomodulating effects of interferon were discussed.

[Antiviral and antiproliferative activity of human interferons and their induction of 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase].

Native preparations of alpha, beta and gamma-interferons as well as recombinant beta-interferon and purified leukocyte alpha-interferon and purified leukocyte alpha-interferon exert antiviral and antiproliferative activity in CaOv cells. Native interferon preparations were shown to be more antiproliferative than purified interferons per unit of antiviral activity (with EMC as well as with less susceptible VSV used as test viruses). It was shown that level of 2'5' oligoadenylatesynthetase activity induction in general correlates with antiproliferative and pronounced antiviral activity of interferons, besides that, the earlier (by 11 hours) induction of the enzyme activity by beta-interferon correlates with more rapid expression of antiproliferative effects by this interferon in comparison with that of alpha-interferon, the latter inducing the peak of enzyme activity by 24 hours.
