[Current views on the operability of pulmonary carcinoma].

A review of the world's leading series showed that, in spite of the criticism levelled against it and its limitations, surgical management is still the first and the soundest means, albeit not the only means of obtaining a cure. In subjects treated surgically only, survival is of the order of 25%, irrespective of histological type. This explains the modern tendency to evaluate complementary treatment, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy in suitable combinations. Stress is also placed on the importance of exploratory thoracotomy as the only sound way of determining the precise radicality of the operation, and with a view to regional reductive surgery.

Correlation between pituitary gonadotropin response to GnRH and testicular histology in subjects suffering from dyspermia.

No significant changes of LH in basal conditions and in response to GnRH stimulation were found in any of the subjects studied; the same applies to basal testosterone and testosterone after HCG stimulation. On the other hand, the pituitary response for FSH gonadotropin showed significant variations in the different groups of subjects examined. These variations were closely correlated to the stages at which spermatogenesis was arrested. The earlier the stage of spermatogenetic arrest, the more strongly enhanced the FSH response to GnRH stimulation. Further, the most significant change, and the one most liable to be suited for purposes of diagnosis, was the one observed when passing from the 1st to the 2nd degree arrest (spermatids-spermatocytes). This FSH pattern is a constant finding; so much so that in the view of some authors testicular biopsy can now be avoided in cases with strongly increased pituitary FSH reserve since in these conditions the seminal line has been shown not to go beyond the stage of the spermatocyte.

Linkage analysis of the fragile X syndrome using a new DNA marker U6.2 defining locus DXS304.

A new RFLP marker U6.2 defining the locus DXS304 was recently mapped to the distal long arm of the X chromosome. In the present study we report the results of genetic linkage analysis of 13 fragile X [fra(X)] families that were informative for the new marker. Analysis of the recombinants for F9-FRAXA, DXS105-FRAXA, DXS98-FRAXA, DXS52-FRAXA, DXS15-FRAXA, and F8C-FRAXA, places DXS304 distal and near to the FRAXA locus. Combined with results from previous studies, our results support the order Xcen.-F9-DXS105-DXS98-FRAXA-DXS304-DXS5 2-DXS15-F8C-Xqter. Close linkage was observed between DXS304 and the disease locus with a peak lod score of 5.12 at theta = 0.04 from the present study and, with a peak lod score of 17.45 at theta = 0.035 when our data are combined with published data from 2 other studies. The present study confirms that U6.2 is useful for prenatal diagnosis and carrier testing in families affected by fra(X) syndrome.

Gastric lymphoma: diagnosis and follow-up of chemotherapy-induced changes using real-time ultrasonography: a report of three cases.

Three cases of secondary gastric lymphoma are presented in which diagnosis was suggested by ultrasound (US) and confirmed by endoscopy and microscopical examination. Three different US patterns are illustrated and compared with endoscopy. US findings paralleled endoscopy during follow-up under antiblastic treatment: both improvement and lack of change in the gastric lesions were reliably predicted by US.
