[Comparative study of baroreceptor reflexes in cats and rats].

The sensitivity of baroreceptor reflexes, the intensity of heart rate changes, and the electrical activity of renal nerve were compared in acute and chronic experiments with changing activity of arterial baroreceptor afferents in rats and cats. Activation of the baroreceptor afferents was due to blood pressure elevations induced with phenylephrine, deceleration of electrical activity of renal nerve was induced by baroreceptor deafferentation. The sensitivity of baroreceptor reflexes, the absolute and relative acceleration of heart rate after baroreceptor deafferentation, as well as the intensity of renal nerve activity suppression were considerably higher in cats as compared with rats.

Long-term remission in acute lymphoid leukemia patients on maintenance chemoimmunotherapy.

Comparative effectiveness of maintenance chemo- and chemo-immunotherapy with Soviet strain of BCG vaccine was studied on 75 children with acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). The patients were divided in two groups: I -- 25 patients received maintenance chemotherapy plus BCG; II -- 50 patients were given sole form of maintenance chemotherapy. Median duration of remission in the group I -- 36.3 +/- 4.2 months; in the group II -- 13.8 +/- 1.9 (p less than 0.001); median duration of life -- 45.1 +/- 3.7 and 23.9 +/- 3.3 (p less than 0.001) respectively. In 6 out of 25 patients (group I) the first complete remission continues for more than 6 years (median duration of remission -- 82.5 and life -- 85.3 months). In the group II the first remission continues only in 1 patient out of 50.

[Specific cellular immunity indices in acute leukemia in children].

Studies on the cell immunity in patients with acute leukemia were conducted in two functionally different tests: in cytotoxic reaction of lymphocytes and in the reaction of inhibition of leucocytes adherence which manifest accordingly the killer and antigen-reactive function of immunocompetent cells. There was found a statistically reliable enhancement of lymphocytes reactivity in patients with acute leukemia against leukemia-associated antigens compared with lymphocytes of healthy donors. The cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes was enhanced during the complete remission and before the recurrence, whereas the potential of antigen-reactive cells was reduced during the complete remission and against the background of the recurrence.

Immunological approach to the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

On the basis of experimental results an immunological method of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment by means of specific immunity regulation was designed. The administration of antibodies (immunoglobulins) with prednisolone to patients induced 100% remissions in a comparatively short time. None of the patients treated with immunoprednisolone therapy had neuroleukemia. The immunological findings indicate that the therapeutic effect depends on the "deblocking" action of the applied immune preparation.

[Clinico-physiologic study of the adequacy of using rheoencephalography to study cerebrovascular circulation in man].

Rheoencephaloplethysmography revealed the increase of impedance specific for enhancement of intracranial blood flow after occlusion of both common jugular veins only in the ocular-occipital lead in humans. The intracranial component of rheoencephalography was calculated from the data of interelectrode current distribution in extra- and intracranial tissues. The maximal value of the current through intracranial tissues reached 15 per cent for the ocular-occipital lead.

Chemoimmunotherapy of acute leukemia in children.

Comparative results of chemo- and chemoimmunotherapy with Soviet strain of BCG vaccine in children with acute leukemia are presented. The immunotherapeutical regimen includes 20 intracutaneous injections of 0.1 mg BCG vaccine given weekly during 5--6 months with subsequent 5--6 months intervals simultaneously with maintenance chemotherapy. In the control group children were only given conventional chemotherapy. The median duration of remission and survival in patients who had received BCG chemoimmunotherapy was 25.2 +/- 1.5 and 32.3 +/- 1.2 months respectively. In the group of patients with chemotherapy alone--13.2 +/- 0.9 and 21.8 +/- 1.1 months respectively (p less than 0.01). The best results were obtained in children who had received before BCG immunotherapy neuroleukemia prophylactic treatment.

[Information content of the rheoencephalogram and rheoencephaloplethysmogram for assessing cerebral hemodynamics].

In acute experiments in cats, separate measurement of impedance of extra and intracranial tissues and skull bones was carried out by passing 30-150 kHz electrical current. Extra and intracranaial tissue impedances are approximately equal and one order less than that of skull bones which excludes electrical current penetration into the cranial cavity directly through the bone. The changes on electroplethysmograms recorded with extra and intracranial electrodes during simultaneous clipping of both common carotids or external and internal jugular veins were compared. In part of experiments jugular veins were clipped before and after switching off extracranial blood flow. Intracranial impedance changes thus achieved are several times greater than extracranial ones and are not registered in extracranial bitemporal electrode location. The only way to register them without intracranial electrode insertion is by use of ocular-occipital lead. Yet in this case the intracranial component makes only about 30% of the registered signal. This value increases significantly with artifical stabilization of extracranial hemodynamics.
