[Type differentiation of serological group B streptococci isolated from milking-cow mammary glands].

By means of type differentiation of the serological B group streptococci isolated from the cow mammary glands the following type antigens could be found: Ia 8X, Ib 4X, II 40X, III 16X, R 4X, X 80X. In 54% of the cultures examined several antigenic types were concurrently found. In one mammary gland several antigenic differentiation; epizootological investigation; cross reactions impedes the utilization of type differentiation of the serological B group streptococci for epizootological investigation. The individual antigenic types of the serological B group streptococci can partially be separated by the examination of isolate colonies.

[Behavior of serum magnesium level during abortion].

Double determinations of whole blood- and serum magnesium levels were according to a complexometric method as described by Schwarzenbach (Hôlasek and Flaschka's procedure) in 134 females (66 healthy pregnant women, 68 abortions). Further, hematocrit was determined in these women. By aid of these values we were able to calculate Mg-concentrations/100 ml erythrocytes in all cases. Serum magnesium levels were depressed in the same relation in abortions and normal gravidae. Therefore, we do not confirm the results of other authors (22) asserting a typical significant decrease of serum-Mg in abortions. We warn against excessive differential-diagnostic interpretation of depressed serum magnesium in abortions. Magnesium concentrations in 100 ml erythrocytes were found significant increased over in abortions against women going through a successfully pregnancy. The cause of this magnesium increase is believed in reactive increased pouring out young partly immature erythrocytes containing high magnesium concentrations caused by losses of blood.

The bacteriophage Mu gene B product is incorporated into the inner membrane of Escherichia coli.

By using the Triton X-114 method, it could be shown that an Mr 33 000 protein expressed from the left-end EcoRI-C fragment of phage Mu behaves like a hydrophobic protein. Fusion of a DNA region coding for this protein to the controllable pL promoter of phage lambda results in the production of large amounts of the 33-kDal protein under inducing conditions. This protein can be isolated in association with the inner membrane of Escherichia coli cells. Based on complementation studies it was concluded that the 33-kDal protein is the product of the early gene B.

One hospital's success with medication budget control.

In the era of major restraint of health care spending in Ontario, the Ottawa General Hospital, a 530-bed adult tertiary care facility, initiated a series of programs aimed at reducing their drug costs by $500,000 over 18 months; the goal was achieved in 12 months. This success is attributed to the collaboration of key medical staff, the pharmacy department and senior administration. Overall, quality of care was unaffected and was perhaps improved.

[Health problems in an insular territory: the EVASANS in French Polynesia].

During the past three decades, French Polynesia has experienced a tremendous economic boom: GDP has multiplied by 30 in thirty years, whereas the population has only doubled in size. Health resources may nowadays be compared to those of a developed country. But as the "territory" is composed of a large number of islands, the availability of services is very uneven. The "Iles sous le Vent" are well staffed and well equipped, but other islands are under privileged. The small population of several small islands does not justify the permanent presence of a medical doctor. In this context, a system of health air-lifting was established. The system is classified into three groups: non-emergencies (scheduled for a later date), emergencies (immediate airlifting), and extreme emergencies (immediate airlifting with a doctor on board). Patients are airlifted to another island in the "territory" (mainly to Papeete, Tahiti), to New Zealand, or to France. The cost of this system (known as EVASANS) is extremely high. It raises the issue of improving local health care facilities and of promoting preventive medicine.
