Treatment of cancer of the penis--a review.

Cancer of the penis is a rare neoplasm and physicians should be aware of this condition. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can lead to excellent results for low stage, low grade lesions. Herein, we discuss the clinical features, staging and management guidelines for this tumour.

cDNA sequence, gene organization, and progesterone induction of mRNA for uteroferrin, a porcine uterine iron transport protein.

The complete nucleotide sequence of porcine uteroferrin mRNA was determined by analysis of overlapping cDNA and genomic clones. The uteroferrin mRNA is 1,424 nucleotides in length and encodes a precursor protein of 338 amino acids, of which 20 residues subsequently are cleaved to form the mature peptide. The uteroferrin gene spans 3.5 kb and consists of three exons and two introns. The first intron separates the 5' untranslated sequences from the translation initiation codon ATG while the other intron interrupts the coding region of the mature protein. Primer extension analysis localized the presumptive transcription initiation site of the mRNA 94 nucleotides 5' of the ATG. No canonical TATA or CAAT sequences were apparent upstream from the mRNA cap site. However, sequences within the 5'-flanking region of the gene exhibit similarities to defined regulatory sequences for iron- and steroid hormone-responsive genes. The steady-state level of uteroferrin mRNA is enhanced by progesterone but not by estrogen alone, although the extent of progesterone induction is lower than at midgestation. The simple organization of the uteroferrin gene, which contrasts with those of the transferrin gene family, and the progesterone induction of uteroferrin mRNA expression suggest that, although this protein may have evolved in a manner distinct from other iron binding proteins, its regulation by steroid hormones may be similar.

Structure and expression of the PHO80 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

In yeast, the repression of acid phosphatase under high phosphate growth conditions requires the trans-acting factor PHO80. We have determined the DNA sequence of the PHO80 gene and found that it encodes a protein of 293 amino acids. The expression of the PHO80 gene, as measured by Northern analysis and level of a PHO80-LacZ fusion protein is independent of the level of phosphate in the growth medium. Disruption of the PHO80 gene is a non-lethal event and causes a derepressed phenotype, with acid phosphatase levels which are 3-4 fold higher than the level found in derepressed wild type cells. Furthermore, over-expression of the PHO80 gene causes a reduction in the level of acid phosphatase produced under derepressed growth conditions. Finally, we have cloned, localized and sequenced a temperature-sensitive allele of PHO80 and found the phenotype to be due to T to C transition causing a substitution of a Ser for a Leu at amino acid 163 in the protein product.

Penile cancer: relation of extent of nodal metastasis to survival.

A retrospective review of 199 patients with penile cancer revealed that the extent of inguinal nodal metastasis was related to survival after radical ilioinguinal dissection. Patients with unilateral inguinal nodal involvement had a 56 per cent median 5-year survival rate, whereas those with bilateral inguinal nodal metastasis, extranodal tumor extension or iliac nodal involvement had a 9 per cent median 5-year survival rate.

Relationship of blood groups and bladder cancer.

A retrospective study correlating the blood groups of 141 patients with bladder cancer showed that patients with blood group A had lower grade tumors with lower mortality rates, and those with blood group O(H) had higher grade tumors and higher mortality rates.

Epidermoid cysts of the testis: role of conservative surgery.

Epidermoid cysts of the testis are rare benign lesions that clinically resemble intratesticular neoplasms. Preoperative testicular ultrasound and an operative frozen section biopsy may help to establish the diagnosis without resorting to orchiectomy. In such selected cases local excision alone should be considered adequate without violating accepted surgical principles.

Estimation of ABO(H) isoantigen expression in bladder tumors.

ABO(H) isoantigen expression was estimated semiquantitatively with the red cell adherence test on single epithelial cell suspensions from 89 bladder tumor and 7 normal bladder specimens. Correlations of red cell adherence counts positive for antigen with the pathological findings of the bladder (histology and stage of tumor) were made in a blind fashion at the end of the study. The mean count positive for antigen from normal bladders was 86.0, which was significantly different (p less than 0.001) from those of muscle-invading lesions (12.6) and flat carcinoma in situ (21.6). This study shows a good correlation among the cell counts positive for antigen, histological findings and stage of disease, and provides the basis for a prospective study that may help to determine the role of ABO(H) isoantigen measurement in bladder tumor patients.

Blood group isoantigens and bladder cancer. An overview.

The role of blood group ABO(H) surface isoantigen measurement in bladder cancer is discussed. The basis for this test is examined and an attempt is made to place the current status of this test in proper perspective.
