Some sex- and age-dependent correlations in acute viral hepatitis.

HBsAg was found to be present in 28.7% of 1980 sera from acute viral hepatitis (AVH) patients tested by immunodiffusion and counterimmunoelectrophoresis. The incidence of HBsAg-positive AVH cases was lower in female subjects aged 10-19 years. The follow up of SGPT, bilirubinemia and thymol turbidity kinetics in 473 of the patients revealed some HBsAg-dependent differences. Such differences oscillated more markedly in adults than in children and were less obvious in women. The possible involvement of certain individual factors in the determinism of hepatitis B virus infection and of its further evolution is suggested.

Accidental transfusion of blood containing HBsAg or anti-HBs.

The presence of HBsAg and anti-HBs was tested in 2,099 surgery patients and in the blood left in 3,157 flasks after transfusion. It was found that accidental transfusion of HBsAg-containing blood had occurred. The 30 patients in which seropositivity correlations between recipients and transfused blood could be established were followed up clinically and serologically at 3, 6 and 12 months after transfusion. Out of the 13 initially seropositive patients 5 showed clinical or subclinical symptoms of viral hepatitis (V.H.). Most of the recipients of HBsAg-containing blood developed a biological response consisting in the appearance of either V.H. or anti-HBs. An increased number of fatal cases was recorded among recipients of anti-HBs-containing blood within 1 to 16 days post transfusion.

Investigations on the distribution of HBs antigen subtypes.

The study was performed in 2,054 sera collected from HBsAg-positive acute viral hepatitis (AVH) patients within the first days after onset. HBsAg were subtyped by immunodiffusion (it was possible to specify the antigenic subdeterminant in 1,816 sera) and titrated by counterelectrophoresis. The results were analysed according to the territory and to the patients' sex and age. The overall ad:ay ratio was of 18:82 and zonal differences in subtype ratio were found. A marked predominance of male subjects (57%) among HBsAg-positive AVH patients was observed, especially in younger age groups. Half of the cases could be included in the age groups from 5 to 29 years. Higher ad:ay values were found at low antigen titers.
