[The use of the Multi-Tabs vitamin and mineral complex to prevent influenza].

Investigations were conducted designed to study effects of the complex of vitamins with minerals "Multi-Tabs" (Denmark) as a preventive measure devised to combat influenza during the 1997 influenza epidemic in Ukraine. The article contains epidemiological characterization of the above epidemic. Used in 160 adults and 55 children "Multi-Tabs" has been shown to be an effective means of the influenza and ARD prophylaxis in an epidemic setting both in adults and children. The above drug is also endowed with a marked hemostimulating activity, which fact was manifested by improvement in parameters characterizing red blood.

[Aneurysms of the cerebral vessels and pneumococcal infection].

Two cases of cerebral aneurysm rupture with repeat subarachnoidal haemorrhage are reported in patients with pneumococcal infection confirmed bacteriologically. It is concluded that in pathogenesis of the aneurysmal rupture in pneumococcal infection a significant role is played not only by pneumococcal tropism to the meninges, but also by affection of the endothelium and cerebral vascular membranes, hemostasis defects, arterial hypertension as manifestations of a general adaptation syndrome.

[The characteristics of the clinical course of hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis].

A study is presented of 132 patients with hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis of viral, bacterial and viral-bacterial origin. Before admission to the clinic meningoencephalitis was diagnosed in 46.2% of patients. The cause of hypodiagnosis was underestimation of the clinical manifestations of the disease and anamnesis findings at the prehospital period. In 15.9% of patients the disease began with psychotic disorders. Lethality was 23.48%.

[Lesions of the nervous system in Haemophilus influenzae infection in adults].

The authors depict 13 cases of CNS injuries in the form of meningities, meningoencephalitis and encephalitis in adults, provoked by Haemophilus influenzae. Provide the clinical, laboratory and instrumental data obtained during examination of the patients in the acute disease stage and during follow-up studies lasting up to 5 years. Rare strains of Haemophilus influenzae, serotypes "c" and "d", were detected in the CSF. Concomitant virus infection was confirmed in seven patients. It is desirable that chloramphenicol, erythromycin or ampicillin be used in such cases. Patients who suffered influenzal meningitis should undergo follow-up studies.

[The clinical characteristics of diseases caused by Mycoplasma hominis].

Of 1125 patients with acute respiratory diseases (complicated) and uncomplicated 49 (4.4%) showed infection caused by Mycoplasma hominis. The diagnosis was established by serological and microbiological methods. The authors describe the microbiological method of detection of the pathogen in nasopharyngeal wash offs and sputum. Illustrative clinical examples are presented.

[The significance of sialic acids and changes in the noncellular structures of the vascular walls in the development of brain edema in meningoencephalitis].

A biochemical study of the level of sialic acids in the blood of 60 patients and pathomorphological examination of autopsy material in 32 cases of meningoencephalitis of different etiology allowed to establish a certain relationship between the state of noncellular substance of vessel walls and the level of sialic acids in the blood playing a certain role in the pathogenesis of edema-swelling of the brain.

[Disseminated intravascular coagulation and its pathogenetic significance in meningoencephalitis].

Combined investigation was performed in 370 patients with meningoencephalitis caused by different etiological factors. This comprised the clinical, laboratory, pathological (in 20 deceased patients) studies aimed at elucidating the role of cerebral microcirculation (CM) disorders in the pathogenesis of its inflammatory lesions. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was detected in meningoencephalitides of various etiologies with all homeostatic links inflicted: blood vessels, platelets, coagulation. DIC had a major impact on the initiation, course and outcome of the disease. Severe microcirculatory disorders boosted the cerebral edema, promoted hemorrhagies. A close link was established between stage-by-stage nature of CM disorders development and clinical features of meningoencephalitis.

[Computed tomography of the brain in suppurative meningoencephalitis].

The studies made showed that one-tenth patient with purulent meningoencephalitis (PME) needs to be examined by axial computerized tomography (ACT) techniques. The following items are indications for ACT: apparent or progressive neurological symptomatology, protracted or relapsing course of PME, formation of the intracranial liquor hypertension, apparent changes in echoencephalography, and congestive disorders in the eyegrounds. Brain ACT permits finding a relevant policy of treating patients (surgery or conservative option) together with predicting the course and outcome of PME.

[Effect of the Epstein-Barr virus on the nervous system].

On the basis of a comprehensive examination of 12 patients with verified Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection it has been shown that this infection can be accompanied by acute and chronic affections of the central and peripheral nervous system. The pathogenesis of chronic EBV-infection involves autoimmune disorders, neurosensitization, a hazard of an injury to the muscular tissue. Chronic EBV-infection calls for differential diagnosis with other slow virus infections, systemic tumor afflictions, systemic diseases of the connective tissue. Acyclovir or valacyclovir can be recommended as treatment of acute and chronic EBV-infection.
