[General mechanisms of regulation of the activity of the stomach and pancreas in peptic ulcer and chronic pancreatitis].

Altogether 25 patients with peptic ulcer and 26 patients with chronic pancreatitis were examined for gastric and pancreatic secretion. Histamine dihydrochloride (0.008-0.024 mg/kg) was employed to stimulate gastric secretion whereas cholecystokinin (2U/kg/h) and calcium gluconate (16 mg/kg) were used to stimulate pancreatic secretion. Lidocain (1.2 mg/kg), a blocker of Ca2+-channels, and lithium hydroxybutyrate (12 mg/kg), a blocker of phosphatidylinositol transformations, were employed for suppression of gastric and pancreatic secretion. The content of HCl, pepsinogen, fucose, cAMP and cGMP was measured in gastric juice, that of bicarbonates, amylase, lipase, trypsin, cAMP and cGMP in pancreatic juice. It has been shown that mechanisms dependent on cAMP and on extra- and intracellular Ca2+ are involved in the initiation and maintenance of gastric and pancreatic secretion. However, the contribution of those mechanisms is different as applied to the regulation of ions and enzymes, on the one hand, and to various enzymes, on the other.

[The action of interferon preparations on strains of Legionella of various serogroups and species].

The action of different preparations of interferon on Legionella strains has been studied in vivo and in vitro. The preparations of leukinferon at a concentration of 500 international units (I.U.) and reaferon at a concentration of 10,000 I.U. have been found to produce an inhibiting effect on Legionella strains in vitro, in a medium with carbon-yeast agar. Leukinferon at a concentration of 125 I.U. suppresses the growth of L. pneumophila also in a liquid medium. The preparation of leukinferon at a minimal concentration of 100 I.U. has been found to suppress the development of lethal infection in chick embryos infected with L. pneumophila strain Philadelphia 1.

[Main indicators of hormonal status in lung diseases].

A radioimmunoassay was used in vitro in the blood serum of 156 lung cancer patients, 21 patients with benign pulmonary tumors and 100 patients with chronic nonspecific pulmonary diseases to study the levels of 9 hormones reflecting function of the major links of endocrine regulation. The most important feature of pulmonary tumor growth was the activation of the hypophyseal-adrenal system. Endocrine shifts in lung cancer and in chronic nonspecific pulmonary diseases were similar in nature. Of the entire spectrum of hormones the importance of ACTH, cortisol, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone was emphasized in differential diagnosis of lung cancer.

[Changes in hormonal-mediatory and immunological indices during anesthesia in cancer patients].

The relationship between hormone-mediator and immunologic components of homeostasis was studied in 82 surgically-treated cancer patients. The pattern of changes in immunity and non-specific resistance was found to depend on the rate of glucocorticoid hormones synthesis in adrenals. Surgery should be carried out under neurovegetative blockade, which prevents immunodepression both during and shortly after surgery.

[Potentials for curing cervical cancer patients with metastases to the regional lymph nodes of the pelvis].

The paper deals with the results of a clinical evaluation of various treatment modalities employed in 155 cases of primary cancer of the uterine cervix (T2 and T3) who had lymphographic signs of metastases into pelvic lymph nodes (N1). The distribution of patients was as follows: group 1--complex gamma-therapy (55 cases), group 2--complex gamma-therapy plus iliac lymphadenectomy (50 cases) and group 3--complex radiation treatment with megavolt bremsstrahlung beam from the luć type installation and iliac lymphadenectomy (50 cases). Five-year survival rates in study groups 1 and 2 were 34,5 and 46.0%, respectively. In 21 cases of group 2 (42.0%), lymphogenic metastasis appeared to be resistant to ionizing irradiation and persisted following complex gamma-therapy. This was confirmed morphologically. Out of these cases, 9 survived for 5 years and were free from recurrence which pointed to the effectiveness of lymphadenectomy. In group 3, histological examination of removed nodes showed that ionizing irradiation had failed to arrest lymphogenic metastasis in 6 cases (12.0%) only. The end results of treatment (62% of 3-year survival) improved significantly due to improvement made at all stages of irradiation as well as combined use of radiation and surgery.

[Effect of nitrate and cytokinin on nitrate reductase activity in isolated corncockle embryos].

The effects of cytokinin and nitrate on the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) in isolated embryos of Agrostemma githago L. were studied. It was shown that the effects of cytokinin and NO-3 on the induction of NR is additive during 8, 12 and 18 hrs of embryos incubation in the solutions of the two inducers. Anticytokinin decreased the cytokinin induced NR by 35--39% and had no effect on the NR induction by nitrate. The substrate and hormonal induction of NR differed in the duration of the lag period. This difference dependent on the physiological state of the embryos at the beginning of incubation. The data obtained are indicative of the independence of cytokinin and NO-3 effects on the NR synthesis in isolated embryos of Agrostemma githago L. Abscisic acid supressed cytokinin- and nitrate-induced NR and had practically no effect on total incorporation of the label into the protein. It is assumed that the induced synthesis of the protein is more sensitive to the action of abscisic acid that the total protein synthesis.
