Investigation of OPET Performance Using GATE, a Geant4-Based Simulation Software.

A combined optical positron emission tomography (OPET) system is capable of both optical and PET imaging in the same setting, and it can provide information/interpretation not possible in single-mode imaging. The scintillator array here serves the dual function of coupling the optical signal from bioluminescence/fluorescence to the photodetector and also of channeling optical scintillations from the gamma rays. We report simulation results of the PET part of OPET using GATE, a Geant4 simulation package. The purpose of this investigation is the definition of the geometric parameters of the OPET tomograph. OPET is composed of six detector blocks arranged in a hexagonal ring-shaped pattern with an inner radius of 15.6 mm. Each detector consists of a two-dimensional array of 8 × 8 scintillator crystals each measuring 2 × 2 × 10 mm(3). Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the GATE software to measure absolute sensitivity, depth of interaction, and spatial resolution for two ring configurations, with and without gantry rotations, two crystal materials, and several crystal lengths. Images were reconstructed with filtered backprojection after angular interleaving and transverse one-dimensional interpolation of the sinogram. We report absolute sensitivities nearly seven times that of the prototype microPET at the center of field of view and 2.0 mm tangential and 2.3 mm radial resolutions with gantry rotations up to an 8.0 mm radial offset. These performance parameters indicate that the imaging spatial resolution and sensitivity of the OPET system will be suitable for high-resolution and high-sensitivity small-animal PET imaging.

Barriers to childhood immunization: findings from a needs assessment study.

This study examines the current status of immunization among 0-3 year old children in Bakersfield and identifies barriers that prevent families from immunizing their children. A survey research design using a stratified sampling method was employed to collect data from 207 randomly selected English and Spanish speaking households having at least one child between the ages of 0-3 in Bakersfield. The findings reveal that 49% of the parents had no shot cards regarding children's immunization status. However, a significant majority of them immunized their children despite having no records. The most commonly reported consumer related barrier for late immunization was having a sick child followed by lack of parental memory and fear of side effects. The major provider-related barriers included lack of an opening for an appointment with the health care provider, limited clinic hours, and long lines in clinics. Lack of transportation was the single most systemic barrier. These findings suggest that reminder calls, increased transportation, weekend clinics and better rapport with parents can improve the immunization rates in ethnically diverse rural communities.

Primary inferior oblique overaction-management by inferior oblique recession.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of 10 mm inferior oblique recession in horizontal strabismus with V pattern and primary inferior oblique overaction. METHODS: Ten patients of V esotropia and exotropia with primary inferior oblique overaction underwent 10 mm inferior oblique recession by the methods described by Park and Stallard. Pre- and postoperative V pattern, inferior oblique overaction and binocularity were assessed. Patients were followed up for 3 months. RESULTS: The mean preoperative V pattern was 38.3 PD and the mean inferior oblique overaction was 22 PD. After surgery the mean correction of the V pattern was 26.9 PD and the mean residual V pattern was 11.4 PD. None of the patients had inferior oblique overaction postoperatively. 70% of the patients showed improvement in binocularity. CONCLUSION: 10 mm Inferior oblique recession by the described technique is a simple, safe and effective method for the cosmetic and functional treatment of horizontal deviation and V pattern with primary inferior oblique overaction.
