[Oculo-cerebral dysplasia: aplasia of the optic nerve with familial microphthalmos and cryptophthalmus. Clinical and computer tomography study].

The authors report on two siblings with severe malformations of the eyes. The 16-year-old girl has bilateral microphthalmus with aplasia of the right optic nerve and a Dandy-Walker cyst of the cerebellum. The right eye has no optic disk or retinal vessels. Her 13-year-old brother has unilateral aplasia of the optic nerve with cryptophthalmus and contralateral microphthalmus. In a computer tomography examination no optic nerve could be demonstrated on the left. The presence of an oculocerebral dysplasia in a brother and sister with healthy parents suggest an autosomal-recessive mode of inheritance of the aplasia of the optic nerve with microphthalmus and/or cryptophthalmus.

[Rhinobasal deompression of the optic nerve following trauma (author's transl)].

Six cases of indirect trauma of the optic nerve caused by head injuries are reported. After rhinobasal decompression of the optic nerve an improvement in visual acuity and visual field was achieved in 4 cases. The indication for optic nerve decompression is discussed, comparing the neurosurgical transfrontal procedure with rhinobasal decompression. The authors advise an early operation, because an improvement may be accomplished even if blindness has occurred immediately after the accident.

[Results of Cüpper's "thread fixation" in squinters with inconstant angle (author's transl)].

The results of strabismus operations on strabismus patients with variable angles are presented. The so-called "Fadenfixation" (Cüppers) is compared with the usual recess-resect method. Of the 62 cases of strabismus with variable angle which were operated without the "Fixation", only 3 cases were parallel post-operationem. By combining the recess-resect method with the "Fadenfixation" either on both eyes or on only one eye, a nearly parallel position was obtained in most cases. In some cases, following a "Fadenfixation" on one eye, a remaining constant angle was removed by a simple recess-resect procedure on the fellow eye. In 30% of the cases of esotropia, the "Fadenfixation" was the method of choice.

[An unusual form of cogwheel macula degeneration: central and paramacular alveolar pigment epitheliopathy (author's transl)].

A peculiar and rare form of spoke-like macular lesion is described as found bilaterally in a 53 year old woman. The unmistakable ophthalmoscopic and angiographic findings are also discussed. Although the clinical picture can be explained by a pigment epitheliopathy with secondary involvement of the neuroepithelium, the precise etiology of this fundus disease still remains problematic.

[Syndrome of blue sclerae and keratoglobus (ocular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (author's transl)].

Two children born on Crete of consanguinous parents presented the following manifestations of the ocular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS): blue sclerae, keratoglobus and rupture of cornea following minor trauma. In cultivated fibroblasts of one of the patients there was no evidence of defective lysine hydroxylation. The possible relation of our case to a recent similar report by Judisch et al. (1976) is discussed. The ocular type of EDS may be genetically heterogenous. Provisionally, we propose for cases with normal lysyl hydroxylation in vitro the term 'type VIII of EDS'.

[Ocular symptoms in Rubinstein-Taybi-Syndrome (author's transl)].

Two cases are reported with the following symptoms: broad thumbs and toes, typical facial abnormalities with beaked nose and hypertelorism. In addition the first child had microcornea, polycoria and subluxation lentis, the second a dacryostenosis. In both cases there were anomalies of refraction and strabismus. A detailed description of the classical findings is also included.

Clotrimazole and bifonazole in the topical treatment of Candida keratitis in rabbits.

Using a reproducible model of Candida albicans keratitis in rabbits we studied the effect of topical clotrimazole and bifonazole. Candida albicans DSM 70010 (2.5 X 10(5) cells) was injected into the corneal stroma of both eyes of 28 rabbits. All eyes developed a corneal ulcer. Fourty-eight hours after inoculation the animals were divided into four groups: I (14 eyes) receiving 10 X clotrimazole 1% drops and subsequently removing the epithelium; II (14 eyes) receiving only clotrimazole drops; III (8 eyes) receiving 6 x bifonazole 1% drops and IV (19 eyes) serving as control (0.9% NaCl castor oil, untreated), 6 eyes of this group were also debrided. A further 6 rabbits were used respectively to judge if the drugs penetrated into the cornea and aqueous humor. There was a significant difference between the clotrimazole group with debridement (I) and the bifonazole group (IV) concerning hypopyon and complications (descemetocele, corneal perforation). Clotrimazole penetrated into the cornea and after debridement into the aqueous humor. Bifonazole could not be identified in the cornea or aqueous humor.
