[Fatal child neglect in West Germany 1 January 1985 to 2 October 1990. Results of a multicenter study].

UNLABELLED: Up to now reliable data were available on cases of lethal child neglect in the area of the Federal Republic of Germany prior to reunification (the former West Germany). In a multicenter study we therefore examined the police and court records for such cases occurring in the period from 1 January 1985 to 2 October 1990 in nearly the entire area of Federal Republic of Germany. RESULTS: The study center received information on 19 cases of lethal child neglect. Extrapolated to all institutes of legal medicine, this corresponds to 20 cases and thus 3.5 cases a year in the whole of West Germany in the period studied. There is to be added a dark-field which cannot be limited more precisely. However, the cases of fatal child neglect might have occurred much more seldom than fatal child abuse caused by use of physical violence. Slightly more than half the victims were younger than 1 year, the oldest one was 7 10/12 years old. Most frequently the children died of starvation and thirst. Mostly the mothers/nursing mothers killed the child alone or together with the victim's father/stepfather. In the majority of the cases there was not a close affection between parents and child. Nearly 30% female/male perpetrators suffered from chronic alcohol abuse. Only 15 (= 56%) of 27 female/male perpetrators were sentenced to imprisonment (period between 7 months on probation and 10 years). Mitigation circumstances existed for nearly half the persons sentenced to imprisonment. It is true that child neglect is a rarer crime, but the experts of legal medicine always have to indicate errors made during the external inspection of the corpse (among others failures to see indications of neglect).

Cause of Death↗

[ABO determination of chewing gum residues].

Tracing for ABH-Antigens on Chewing Gum 14 different chewing gum-brands were examined for their quality as trace carriers. Our examinations of freshly chewed gums resulted in distinction of ABH-antigens without greater difficulties by using absorption/elution and absorption/inhibition techniques. A simple method was developed to pulverize chewing gum for elution of the antigens.

ABO Blood-Group System↗

[Axe blow injuries caused by reflex action?].

In cases of questionable insurance fraud through self mutilation axe blows now as before play an important role. Occasionally it is alleged that the billet began to totter during the stroke and that the left hand responded to this stimulus by an unwilled movement to the billet. By this the thumb or forefinger was placed unfortunately on the upper surface of the timber and hit by the chopper. According to the literature and on the basis of own experiments we estimate the reaction time, i.e. initiation time plus movement time, at 700 msec., at least, whereas the stroke needs only 220-290 msec. (chopper), and 280-380 msec. (axe), respectively, as could be shown in further experiments. That means, that the left hand can only touch the billet when the blow already has reached the goal. Hence unwilling finger mutilations can scarcely be the result of a "reflex action" of this kind.

Amputation, Traumatic↗

[Morphology findings in intentional hand amputation].

Presented is the case of a 33 years old farmer, who alleged to have lost his left hand accidentally when grasping into a chuff-cutter. Immediate investigation of the amputate proved, that the hand must have been severed initially by a single cut and was only secondarily bruised by multiple blunt contusions. The farmer confessed to have mutilated himself with some kind of a guillotine which he had constructed for that particular purpose. The amputate was then thrown into the chuff-cutter to make his allegation appear credible and to prevent replantation. The motivation of this self-mutilation was the expectation of considerable insurance payments.

[Accident or planned self mutilation? Probability of accidental injuries during chopping].

The results of 200 chopping experiments with a big axe and a smaller cleaver on two different chopping-block levels were presented. Objects were beech-billets with relatively big cross-section areas. In 66 per cent of all experiments the holding hand was put partially or completely upon the surface of the billet, in a principally endangering position. The lateral deviations from the intended impact place were in 62 per cent not more than +/- 1.5 cm; 7.5 per cent hit closer to the holding hand, in the utmost case 3.7 cm, the angle with the aspired sagittal impact plane in most cases not transgressing 5 degrees in the direction of the holding hand and never more than 15 degrees. It can be deduced, that unwilled forefinger injuries from axe stroke are not to be expected on the base phalanx very probably; those in a right angle to the finger axis are not possible, however. For the thumb these rules do not hold in like manner.

Accidents↗

[Disposal of the corpse by cement encapsulation and submersion in water].

The paper reports on a remarkable case of corpse disposal. A 32-year-old inmate of a prison with the permission to go out on weekends had disappeared since 1 1/4 years. His corpse poured in a concrete block was found in a metal-drum having been sunk in a disused part of a river. Although formation of adipocere and putrefaction was found, the corpse was in a relatively good status of conservation. The man had been killed by a punch of a forked crowbar on his head.
