Osteochondroma of the coronoid process of the mandible. Report of a case showing histological evidence of neoplasia.

A case of unilateral enlargement of the coronoid process of the mandible is presented. The patient, a 37-year-old woman complained of restricted mandibular movement and swelling in the left zygomatic region. Coronoidectomy was performed intraorally, producing improved mandibular movement. The specimen consisted of a large amount of cartilage and mature bone. Most of the cartilage showed a marked disturbance in endochondral ossification. The histopathological diagnosis was osteochondroma. A review of the basic nature of the disease in the reported cases is presented. The value of computed tomography in deciding on a surgical procedure is briefly mentioned.

[Renal cell carcinomas. Clinical studies on diagnostic opportunities].

We clinically investigated 150 subjects suffering from renal cellular cancers as to their diagnostic opportunities. They underwent medical treatment after being hospitalized in the urology section of Gunma University from 1961 to 1988. We divided the cases into two groups to be compared: 63 cases in the first period (1961 to 1979) before introduction of ultrasound (US) and scan (CT), and 87 cases in the second period (1980 to 1988) after introduction of the above devices. The number of patients increased in the second period, year by year. Evaluation of symptoms indicated that 62 of the 63 cases in the first period belonged to the suspected category; the remaining one (1.6%) belonged to the incidental category, but its diagnosis followed intravenous pyelography (IVP). Out of the 87 cases in the second period, 29 (33.3%) belonged to the incidental category which was recognized to be increasing; 19 cases were diagnosed based on US findings, and 6 cases on CT. Concerning prognosis, a significantly favorable prognosis was indicated for the second-period cases as compared with those of the first period, from the statistical point of view. With respect to progressive degree and prognosis of 58 suspected cases and 29 incidental cases in the second period, statistically there were significantly more cases of low grade and, therefore, with favorable prognosis in the latter.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Stimulation of insulin secretion by transforming growth factor-beta.

Effects of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) on insulin secretion were studied in rat pancreatic islets. When islets were incubated in a batch incubation system with various concentrations of TGF-beta in the presence of 2.8 mM glucose, TGF- beta increased insulin release in a concentration-dependent manner. Both TGF- beta 1 and TGF- beta 2 were equally effective. The stimulatory action of TGF- beta was greater in the presence of stimulatory concentration of glucose. In perifusion system, TGF- beta induced an immediate monotonic increase in insulin secretion. These results indicate that TGF- beta is a stimulator of insulin secretion.

A novel action of activin A: stimulation of insulin secretion in rat pancreatic islets.

The present study was conducted to examine an action of activin A on insulin secretion from rat pancreatic islets. In a batch incubation system, activin A stimulated insulin secretion in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations higher than 1 nM. Furthermore, activin A greatly potentiated glucose-induced insulin release. When islets were perifused with 1 nM activin A, insulin secretion was barely affected in this system. However, the insulin response to 16.7 mM glucose was greatly enhanced. Both the first and second phases of insulin response were enhanced by 1 nM activin A. These results indicate that, in addition to its known actions on pituitary-gonadal and hematopoietic systems, activin A modulates the function of pancreatic islets and stimulates insulin secretion.

High-performance liquid chromatography of carthamin, safflor yellow A and a precursor of carthamin. Application to the investigation of an unknown red pigment produced in cultured cells of safflower.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method was developed to analyse and purify carthamin, safflor yellow A (safflomin-A) and the yellow precursor of carthamin. A red pigment similar to carthamin was extracted from cell suspension cultures of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) as an application of biotechnology. The RP-HPLC method was used to characterize the unknown red pigment. Various spectroscopic methods were used to characterize purified carthamin and the purified unknown pigment. Based on these spectral observations, it was concluded that the unknown red pigment produced in cultured cells of safflower differed from carthamin, although the unknown pigment might be a glycoside. From other observations, the possibility of anthocyanins and carotenoids were also discounted. It was assumed that the cultured cells lacked the biosynthetic pathway of the yellow precursor of carthamin, although they possessed the activity of the enzyme mediating the synthesis of carthamin from the yellow precursor.

Compression therapy for parotid haemangioma in infants. A report of three cases.

Three cases of parotid haemangioma in infants are presented. Compression therapy was applied in these cases using a resin splint and a headcap and they were very effective. In the first case, the lesion had begun to reduce in volume within two weeks after starting the compression therapy. The haemangioma had disappeared completely in sixteen months. In the second and third cases, the lesions have disappeared in eight months and fifteen months, respectively. In all of the cases, no side effects were noticed. We believe that compression therapy is a safe and effective treatment modality for haemangiomas in infants even though these may disappear spontaneously in some cases.
