Synovial sarcoma with brain metastases. Report of a case responding to supervoltage irradiation and review of the literature.
A 32-year-old man with clinically evident brain metastases from synovial sarcoma had a complete clinical remission after cerebral radiation. At autopsy, residual tumor was found in the brain.
Five-year remissions of metastatic solid teratoma of the ovary.
To date, only three 5-year survivors with metastatic solid malignant teratoma of the ovary have been reported. The authors report two additional cases surviving 5 years or greater. In both cases, the embryonal teratomatous elements matured to Grade 0 peritoneal metastases after intensive chemotherapy and surgery with or without radiotherapy. Since only one of the two patients had an objective response to therapy, we speculated that the maturation of the tumor in both patients might be, but is not proven to be, a consequence of chemotherapy, surgery, and/or radiotherapy. Because the prognosis, even in Stage IA solid ovarian teratoma, is so poor, we suggest that all such patients should have 2 years of adjuvant chemotherapy consisting of vincristine, dactinomycin, and cyclophosphamide. Patients with demonstrable metastases should receive the same chemotherapy until either all tumor has regressed or all immature elements have reverted to mature tissue.
Brain metastasis from prostatic carcinoma.
Between 1959 and 1971 there were 91 patients with clinically diagnosed prostatic carcinoma who were autopsied at Roswell Park Memorial Institute. In four of these 91 (4.4%) intracerebral metastasis were found at autopsy, but only in one of these four was the diagnosis arrived at pre-mortem. This report describes the diagnosis and management of intracerebral metastasis from prostate carcinoma. It appears, on the basis of our initial experience, that the clinical diagnosis of this entity deserves more frequent consideration.

Some properties of acetylcholinesterase from rat retina.
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) of rat retina was studied with respect to its kinetic and other properties, and a comparison was made with the enzyme from brain. The subcellular distribution of the retinal AChE showed that the enzyme was concentrated in the synaptosomal-mitochondrial fraction although in the brain the AChE was distributed more evenly between the fractions studied. The enzyme from both retina and brain was easily solubilised and exhibited a Km of the order of 10(-4) M. The pH optimum was 8.3-8.6 for the AChE from both tissues for both the soluble and particulate enzyme.
Treatment, results and prognostic factors in stage I and II sarcomas of the corpus uteri.
One-hundred and four cases of Stage I and II uterine sarcomas treated at Rosewell Park Memorial Institute over a 27 year period are reviewed. Included are 30 cases of mixed mesodermal tumor, 27 cases of carcinosarcoma, 25 cases of endometrial stromal sarcoma, and 22 cases of leiomyosarcoma. Prognostic factors were found to include histologic classification, stage, uterine size, depth of myometrial invasion, and type of treatment. Endometrial stromal sarcomas had the best over-all prognosis. Radiation therapy alone was inadequate treatment, but was of adjunctive value to surgery in terms of increasing survival and decreasing pelvic recurrences in patients with endometrial stromal sarcoma, mixed mesodermal tumor, and carcinosarcoma. Patients with leiomyosarcoma did not benefit from adjunctive radiation therapy.
Alpha-fetoprotein and albumin produced by subclonal cell population of the ascites hepatoma AH-66 in vitro.
Subclonal cell populations were prepared from a clonal line of the rat ascites hepatoma AH-66 in vitro, using the agar plate culture method. alpha-Fetoprotein and albumin concentrations in culture media of these subclones were determined by 125I-radioimmunoassay and single radial immunodiffusion method, respectively. Results demonstrated that the AH-66 clone was a complex of cells with varying producibility of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin. All the subclones showed varied and distinct production of alpha-fetoprotein, but not all the subclones produced detectable levels of albumin.
Behavioral effects in rats following intrastriatal microinjection of manganese.
We have demonstrated that injection of manganese into one caudate nucleus in rats results in a predominant ipsilateral turning behavior, accompanied at higher doses by an intermittent, alternating and dose-related incidence of contralateral turning and stereotypies. Although the pharmacological evidence produced (effect of alpha-MT, L-DOPA, pargyline) indicates a definite participation of the dopaminergic system in the latter two phenomena, it is probable that ipsilateral turning is the result of involvement of other transmitter systems as well. Tegmental serotoninergic and intrastriatal cholinergic pathways appear to be involved in the production of the basic postural asymmetry resulting in turning. The amount of interference with the nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways may determine the speed of circling, and the concurrent inhibition of locomotion. This is more evident with bilateral injections. Manganese appears to act at presynaptic levels within the striatum by blocking release of the transmitter, thus creating a localized, relative deficit in caudate function. The end result is the release of the dominant "ipsilateral syndrome-inducing system' from its inhibitory control. Repeated or chronic administration of this metal in man or animals is known to result in a brain dopamine and/or serotonin deficit commensurate with the clinical manifestations of bradykinesia and dystonia. Our results are compatible with the anatomical findings of Poirier and collaborators and tend to support the dual ipsilateral and contralateral syndrome-inducing systems in the caudate postulated by Cools, and the complementary roles of dopamine, serotonin and acetylcholine within that nucleus. No one transmitter is involved alone in the experimental production of the manganese syndrome, or of its component symptoms.

Alpha-Fetoprotein and albumin synthesis during the cell cycle.
The synthesis of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin in two clones of AH66 hepatoma was studied. (1) Amounts of AFP and albumin synthesized by the C-4 clone were 2.9 and 0.28 X 10(-7) mug per cell per hour, respectively. AFP and albumin amounts synthesized by the A-1 clone were 2.5 and 1.8 X 10(-7) mug per cell per hour, respectively. (2) The cell cycles of the C-4 and A-1 clones were as follows: C-4 clone: mean generation time 20.5 hours: G1, 10 hours; S, 7 hours; G2, 4 hours; and M, 30 minutes. A-1 clone: mean generation time 50.7 hours: G1, 36 hours; S, 10 hours; G2, 4 hours; and M, 30-60 minutes. (3) AFP was found to be synthesized from late G1 phase to the end of the S phase for 9 hours in C-4 and 25 hours in A-1. The albumin production was from late S phase to the beginning of the G2 phase for 4 hours in C-4 and 9 hours in A-1, which were approximately half or one-third of the time spent on AFP production. (4) The double staining with fluorescent-conjugated antibodies to AFP and albumin demonstrated that AFP and albumin are probably synthesized by different cells.

Cyclic premenstrual unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Report of two cases.
Two young women developed unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia that fluctuated with the menstrual cycle. They were otherwise healthy, and there was no evidence of hematologic or chronic liver disease. Serum unconjugated bilirubin rose concomitant with the rise of basal temperature during the premenstrual period, and it declined immediately after the end of menses. Administration of progesterone during the postmenstrual period elevated unconjugated bilirubin. A close relation of hyperbilirubinemia to female hormones was suggested. The condition may be called "constitutional unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia with a menstrual cycle.
Paget's disease of the vulva: a clinicopathologic study of eight cases.
Clinicopatholigic findings in 8 patients with Paget's disease of the vulva are presented with a discussion if its pathogenesis. In 7 cases the disease was intraepithelial, and in 1 it was accompanied by underlying adenocarcinoma. The treatment of choice is surgical. The importance of early diagnosis, adequate excision, and close followup is emphasized. In 2 cases, the disease was associated with carcinoma of the breast and in 1 case with carcinoma of the liver.
