[A cohort study on parental history of hypertension and the risk of cardiovascular disease in Chinese population].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between parental history of hypertension and the incidence of cardiovascular disease in Chinese populations. METHODS: A total of 15 131 individuals (7015 men and 8116 women, aged from 35 to 59 years) in China were enrolled and followed up from 1992 to 2005. The information on the parental history of hypertension of the participants was collected. The individuals were divided into three groups according to their parental history of hypertension: those without parental history of hypertension (group 1), those with one parent history of hypertension (group 2) and those with both parents history of hypertension (group 3). The hazard ratio and its 95% confidence interval were calculated using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: There were 448 cardiovascular events (including 82 cardiac events and 370 stroke events and 4 with both cardiac and stroke events) during the 163 858 person-years of observation. After adjusting for age, smoking and drinking, the hazard ratio for cardiovascular disease for group 1, group 2 and group 3 were 1.00, 1.34 (1.01 - 1.78), 2.58 (1.62 - 4.11) in men respectively and 1.00, 1.77 (1.27 - 2.45), 2.55 (1.44 - 4.54) in women respectively. After further adjusting for serum total cholesterol (TC), high density lipid cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting glucose, body mass index (BMI) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the model, the hazard ratio for cardiovascular disease for those three groups were 1.00, 1.01 (0.76 - 1.35), 1.72 (1.07 - 2.75) in men respectively and 1.00, 1.31 (0.94 - 1.84), 1.76 (0.98 - 3.15) in women respectively. CONCLUSION: The individuals with parental history of hypertension have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, especially for those with both parents history of hypertension.

[Association of polymorphism of low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 Q89R, A1330V with bone mineral density in premenopausal northern Chinese women].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) gene Q89R, A1330V polymorphism with bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal Northern Chinese women. METHODS: 283 unrelated healthy residents of Han nationality in Harbin, aged 20 - 50, were selected. All subjects completed a food frequency questionnaire administered by a trained dietitian to estimate dietary calcium intakes, and were measured values of biochemical and hormone, such as the level of serum calcium, serum phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, 25 (OH) D3, 1, 25 (OH)2D3. The BMD phenotypes were measured by dual energy X-ray densitometry. The polymorphisms of LRP5 gene were determined using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). RESULTS: Frequencies of LRP5 genotype QQ, QR, AA and AV were 83.4%, 16.6%, 64.3% and 35.7% in all subjects. It failed to find that the values of serum biochemistry and the levels of hormones were statistically different among genotypes. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the strongest predictor for BMD was body weight, other significant predictors were age and LRP5 genotypes, A1330V polymorphism were associated with BMD at lumbar spine, however Q89R polymorphism were associated with BMD at shaft and total hip (P = 0.033 and 0.034 respectively). CONCLUSION: LRP gene polymorphism was predictor for BMD in Northern Chinese premenopausal women, BMD at various were modified by different genetic and lifestyle factors in female.

[Effects of baicalein on the proliferation and differentiation of pig preadipocyte].

To investigate the effects of Baicalein (BAI) on the proliferation and differentiation of pig preadipocytes, and elucidate its potential mechanism. Primary preadipocytes of pig were cultured in vitro. The morphologic changes of preadipocytes differentiation were observed by Oil Red O staining. Status of cell proliferation was detected by MTT assay. The degree of adipogenesis and differentiation were measured by Oil Red O staining extraction assay. The activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) was detected by spectrophotometry. The mRNA expression of special peroxisome proliferation activated receptor-gamma2 gene (PPARgamma2) was detected by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). When preadipocytes differentiated into adipocytes, the preadipocytes were changed from shuttle shape to oval or round, in which big and small lipid droplets were filled. The proliferation of preadipocytes was inhibited by the treatment of 160-640 micromol/L BAI (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression of PPARgamma2 and FAS activity and the differentiation of preadipocytes was repressed by 40-320 micromol/L BAI treatment (P < 0.05). It is concluded that the proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes is inhibited by BAI in some degree. The effect of BAI on differentiation of preadipocytes may be resulted from inhibiting the mRNA expression of PPARgamma2 and reducing FAS activity.

[Study on the risk factors of repeated abortion among unmarried adolescents].

OBJECTIVE: To find out the rate of repeated induced abortion among unmarried abortion women and to study the relevant risk factors. METHODS: From July to September 2005, we used the method of hospital based descriptive epidemiological study to investigate 2295 abortion women below 25 years of age in Beijing, Shanghai and Zhengzhou. Case-control study was used as the method. We considered the women with history of repeated abortion as case group (736 women) and considered the women without history of repeated abortion as control group (1559 women). RESULTS: The mean age of respondents was 21.92 years with minimal age as 15 years. 17.2 % aborted women aged below 20 years with 32. 1% of them were ever having a history of previous induced abortion. Among 736 women with repeated abortion, 75.3 % of them had one time of induced abortion previously, 18.1% having two times, 4.2% having 3 times, 13 women having 4 times and 4 women having 5 times and one even with the maximum of having 8 times of previous abortion. In comparison with control group, the case group had higher rate among women whose first sex was below 18 years (16.2% vs. 9.4% , P<0.01). There were higher rates of women under following conditions: having exposed to sexual behavior for more than 3 years (33.6% vs. 6.6 % , P<0.01), having cohabited with male partner for over 1 year (64.6% vs. 23.9%, P <0.01), having regular sexual life (48.5 % vs. 37. 1%, P < 0.05), having multiple sexual partners (36.0% vs. 15.0%,P<0.01) having unwanted sex (6.0% vs. 3.9%, P<0.05), whose current pregnancy resulted from contraceptive failure (39.3% vs. 31.6%, P< 0.01), having a history of high-risk abortion (30.8% vs. 3.1%, P< 0.01) etc. In comparison with the control group, the case group showed higher rates of male partners not supporting this induced abortion, male partner not participating in decision-making on abortion and male partner not accompanying the female partners to seek for abortion service (rates of the three major factors in case group and in control group were 10.3% vs. 5.9%, P< 0.01, 30.3% vs. 24.0%, and 27.5% vs. 23.5%, P<0.01, respectively). CONCLUSION: The rate of repeated induced abortion among unmarried abortion women was relatively high. The risk factors for females would include: younger age of sex debut, longer duration from the beginning of first sex to the current abortion, cohabitation, regular sexual life, multiple sexual partners, unwanted sex, contraceptive failure and high risk induced abortion. Meanwhile, unmarried but repeated abortion was related to the differences of gender between males and females and male partner's concern on induced abortion.

Cell death mechanism and protective effect of erythropoietin after focal ischemia in the whisker-barrel cortex of neonatal rats.

Cell death induced by the combined insult of hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal rodents has been extensively investigated. Ischemia-only-induced cell death, however, has been much less characterized. Based on the notion that 1) ischemic stroke is a relatively common disorder in human neonates, and 2) developing cells are more susceptible to apoptosis, the present study examined whether typical apoptosis was induced by cerebral ischemia in a new neonatal rat model. Erythropoietin (EPO; Epoetin) was tested for its protective effect against ischemia-induced cell death. Postnatal day 7 rats were subjected to permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery branch supplying the right whisker-barrel cortex. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase biotin-dUTP nick end-labeled-positive cells in the ischemic region were detectable 4 h after ischemia and reached a peak level 16 h later. The cell death was preceded by caspase activation and cytochrome c release. Cell body shrinkage was evident among damaged cells. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed DNA damage with a smear pattern as well as DNA laddering. Electron microscopy demonstrated apoptotic features such as cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, and fragmentation; meanwhile, necrotic alterations coexisted in the cytoplasm. EPO treatment increased signal transducers and activators of transcription-5 and Bcl-2 levels, markedly attenuated apoptotic cell death, and reduced ischemic infarct in the cortex. It is suggested that focal ischemia in the developing brain causes cell death with prominent apoptotic features coexisting with some characteristics of necrosis. This is consistent with the concept of hybrid death described previously in cultures and adult or developing brain. EPO may be explored as a potential therapy for neonatal ischemic stroke.

The trigonal bipyramidal MN3M species: a new kind of aromatic complex containing a multiple-fold aromatic N3 subunit.

A new kind of aromatic trigonal bipyramidal MN3M (M=Be, B, Mg, Al, and Ca) species, with all real frequencies, is obtained at the MP2/6-311+G(3d) level. The nucleus-independent chemical shift values are -102.16 ppm for the N3 (3-) ring, and -74.09, -79.39, -65.06, -74.44, and -62.33 ppm (at the geometrical center of the trigonal bipyramid) for BeN3Be, BN3B, MgN3Mg, AlN3Al, and CaN3Ca, respectively. Molecular orbital analysis indicates that the regular triangular N3 (3-) ring and each MN3M species have three aromatic six-electron systems (pi, sigma(p), and sigma(s)) and exhibit threefold aromaticity. The CaN3Ca species has a very low vertical ionization energy of 3.64 eV at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(3d) level, which is even lower than the ionization energy (3.9 eV) of the Cs atom. Therefore, CaN3Ca can be considered as a new superalkali species. A further study on the CaN3CaCl molecule confirms the superalkali characteristics of CaN3Ca. Two interesting phenomena are explored in the MN3M species: the delocalized electron cloud of the N3 subunit is elongated by two M cations, and the electron clouds of two M cations are distended by the N3 (3-) ring.

Synthesis of bifunctionalized mesoporous organosilica spheres for high-performance liquid chromatography.

Phenyl-functionalized mesoporous ethane-silicas with spherical morphology were synthesized by one-step co-condensation of phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) and 1,2-bis(trimethoxysily)ethane (BTME) using a triblock copolymer EO(20)PO(70)EO(20) (P123) as template with the aid of a co-surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) and a co-solvent (ethanol) in acidic medium. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that phenyl-functionalized ethane-silica has wormhole-like mesostructure and perfect spherical morphology. The chemical stability of phenyl-functionalized mesoporous ethane-silica in basic medium is greatly improved owing to the ethane groups bridged in the mesoporous framework. This work also demonstrates that the phenyl-functionalized mesoporous ethane-silica spheres are excellent packing materials for potential application in the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Estimation of arterial and cardiopulmonary total peripheral resistance baroreflex gain values: validation by chronic arterial baroreceptor denervation.

Feedback control of total peripheral resistance (TPR) by the arterial and cardiopulmonary baroreflex systems is an important mechanism for short-term blood pressure regulation. Existing methods for measuring this TPR baroreflex mechanism typically aim to quantify only the gain value of one baroreflex system as it operates in open-loop conditions. As a result, the normal, integrated functioning of the arterial and cardiopulmonary baroreflex control of TPR remains to be fully elucidated. To this end, the laboratory of Mukkamala et al. (Mukkamala R, Toska K, and Cohen RJ. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 284: H947-H959, 2003) previously proposed a potentially noninvasive technique for estimating the closed-loop (dimensionless) gain values of the arterial TPR baroreflex (GA) and the cardiopulmonary TPR baroreflex (GC) by mathematical analysis of the subtle, beat-to-beat fluctuations in arterial blood pressure, cardiac output, and stroke volume. Here, we review the technique with additional details and describe its experimental evaluation with respect to spontaneous hemodynamic variability measured from seven conscious dogs, before and after chronic arterial baroreceptor denervation. The technique was able to correctly predict the group-average changes in GA and GC that have previously been shown to occur following chronic arterial baroreceptor denervation. That is, reflex control by the arterial TPR baroreflex was virtually abolished (GA = -2.1 +/- 0.6 to 0.3 +/- 0.2; P < 0.05), while reflex control by the cardiopulmonary TPR baroreflex more than doubled (GC = -0.7 +/- 0.4 to -1.8 +/- 0.2; P < 0.05). With further successful experimental testing, the technique may ultimately be employed to advance the basic understanding of TPR baroreflex functioning in both humans and animals in health and disease.

Rapid and ultrasensitive determination of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine derivatizated with 5-(4,6-dichloro-s-triazin-2-ylamino) fluorescein by micellar electrokinetic chromatography with laser-induced fluorescence detection.

This paper presents a micellar electrokinetic chromatography method with laser-induced fluorescence detection to analyze ephedrine (E) and pseudoephedrine (PE) after derivatizated with 5-(4,6-dichloro-s-triazin-2-ylamino) fluorescein. The optimum derivatization conditions were: 0.05 M Na2CO(3/NaHCO3 (pH 9.5), reaction time 30 min at 45 degrees C, molar ratio of DTAF to E and PE mixture 20:1. The baseline separation was achieved within 8 min with running buffer composed of 20 mM borate+20 mM SDS+15% acetonitrile (v/v) (adjusted pH 9.8), and applied voltage of 20 kV. Good linearity relationships (correlation coefficients: 0.9906 for E and 0.9941 for PE) between the peak heights and concentration of the analytes were obtained (2.5-50 ngmL(-1)). The detection limits for E and PE were 3.85 x 10(-4) and 1.41 x 10(-4)ngmL(-1), respectively, which indicated that the proposed method surpassed other chromatographic alternatives in terms of limit of detection by at least 10(3) folds. The method was applied to the analysis of the two alkaloids in ephedra herb plants and its preparations with recoveries in the range of 89.6-107.0%.

Olfactory ensheathing cells and olfactory nerve fibroblasts maintain continuous open channels for regrowth of olfactory nerve fibres.

The ensheathing cells of the olfactory nerves are arranged end-to-end to form a continuous channel enclosing the olfactory axons from their origin in the olfactory mucosa to their termination in the olfactory bulb. On their outer surface, the olfactory ensheathing cell channels have a basal lamina and an outer encirclement of olfactory nerve fibroblasts. We present an anatomical model of the ensheathing arrangements for the entire transit of the olfactory axons from the horizontal basal cells of the mucosa through the nerves to the superficial astrocytes of the bulb. We used intracranial section of the olfactory nerves to induce a rapid retrograde loss of olfactory neurons and degeneration of their axons, followed by replacement of the neurons from stem cells in the mucosa and growth of the newly formed axons along the olfactory nerves. The olfactory ensheathing cells survive and play a vital role in this process. Unlike Schwann cells in damaged peripheral nerve, the olfactory ensheathing cells neither divide nor migrate. They are actively phagocytic for removal of the degenerating axons, and provide continuous stable open channels along which adventitious cells such as erythrocytes and macrophages can travel, and along which the newly formed axons can regenerate. We suggest that the persistence of these open channels is an important element in the effectiveness of the regeneration. These properties, which the olfactory ensheathing cells exert in collaboration with olfactory nerve fibroblasts, may also be involved in the reparative effects of these cells when transplanted into lesions of the spinal cord.

Human serum albumin interaction with formononetin studied using fluorescence anisotropy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and molecular modeling methods.

Interaction of formononetin with a model transport protein, human serum albumin (HSA), has been studied using fluorescence anisotropy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and molecular modeling methods. Upon binding with HSA, the fluorescence spectrum of formononetin exhibits appreciable hypsochromic shift along with an enhancement in the fluorescence intensity. Gradual addition of HSA led to a marked increase in fluorescence anisotropy (r). From the value of fluorescence anisotropy, it is argued that the drug is located in a restricted environment of protein. The binding constant (K approximately 1.6 x 10(5) M(-1)) and the standard free energy change (DeltaG(0) approximately -29.9 kJ/mol) of formononetin-HSA interaction have been calculated according to the relevant fluorescence data. Fourier transform infrared measurements have shown that the secondary structures of the protein have been changed by the interaction of formononetin with HSA. Computational mapping of the possible binding sites of formononetin revealed the molecule to be bound in the large hydrophobic cavity of subdomain IIA.

Effect of modulating unfolded state structure on the folding kinetics of the villin headpiece subdomain.

Equilibrium Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and temperature-jump (T-jump) IR spectroscopic techniques were used to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of the unfolding and folding of the villin headpiece helical subdomain (HP36), a small three-helix protein. A double phenylalanine mutant (HP36 F47L, F51L) that destabilizes the hydrophobic core of this protein also was studied. The double mutant is less stable than wild type (WT) and has been shown to contain less residual secondary structure and tertiary contacts in its unfolded state. The relaxation kinetics after a T-jump perturbation were studied for both HP36 and HP36 F47L, F51L. Both proteins exhibited biphasic relaxation kinetics in response to a T-jump. The folding times for the WT (3.23 micros at 60.2 degrees C) and double phenylalanine mutant (3.01 micros at 49.9 degrees C) at the approximate midpoints of their thermal unfolding transitions were found to be similar. The folding time for the WT was determined to be 3.34 mus at 49.9 degrees C, similar to the folding time of the double phenylalanine mutant at that temperature. The double phenylalanine mutant, however, unfolds faster with an unfolding time of 3.01 micros compared with 6.97 micros for the WT at 49.9 degrees C.

Improved solvent-free microwave extraction of essential oil from dried Cuminum cyminum L. and Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim.

Solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) is a recently developed green technique which is performed in atmospheric conditions without adding any solvent or water. SFME has already been applied to extraction of essential oil from fresh plant materials or dried materials prior moistened. The essential oil is evaporated by the in situ water in the plant materials. In this paper, it was observed that an improved SFME, in which a kind of microwave absorption solid medium, such as carbonyl iron powders (CIP), was added and mixed with the sample, can be applied to extraction of essential oil from the dried plant materials without any pretreatment. Because the microwave absorption capacity of CIP is much better than that of water, the extraction time while using the improved SFME is no more than 30 min using a microwave power of 85 W. Compared to the conventional SFME, the advantages of improved SFME were to speed up the extraction rate and need no pretreatment. Improved SFME has been compared with conventional SFME, microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and conventional hydrodistillation (HD) for the extraction of essential oil from dried Cuminum cyminum L. and Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. By using GC-MS system the compositions of essential oil extracted by applying four kinds of extraction methods were identified. There was no obvious difference in the quality of essential oils obtained by the four kinds of extraction methods.

Serine peptidase HTRA3 is closely associated with human placental development and is elevated in pregnancy serum.

HTRA3 is a newly identified serine peptidase of the mammalian HTRA (high-temperature requirement factor A) family, that is upregulated dramatically during mouse placental development. The current study determined whether HTRA3 was involved in human placentation. During the menstrual cycle, HTRA3 was expressed primarily in the endometrial glands, being significantly upregulated toward the mid- to late secretory phases; prominent expression in the stroma detected only in the decidual cells in the late secretory phase. Thus, overall endometrial HTRA3 expression was highest in the late secretory phase, when the endometrium is prepared for maternal-trophoblast interaction. During the first trimester of pregnancy, both glandular and decidual HTRA3 expression increased further with the decidual upregulation being highly significant. The strong link between HTRA3 expression and endometrial stromal cell decidualization was further established in an in vitro model using primary endometrial stromal cells. HTRA3 was also expressed by certain trophoblast subtypes in the first-trimester placenta: strongly in the villous syncytiotrophoblast, trophoblast shell, and endovascular trophoblast and weakly in the distal portion of the trophoblast cell columns but not in villous cytotrophoblast, the proximal region of the cell columns, or interstitial trophoblast. Upregulation of HTRA3 expression in association with placental development was revealed by a significant elevation of this protein in the maternal serum during the first trimester. We thus propose that HTRA3 is a previously unrecognized factor closely associated with and potentially important for human placentation. This study established crucial groundwork for future investigations toward establishing the physiological roles of HTRA3 in human placentation.

Li3-O-Li3 molecule: a metal-nonmetal-metal sandwichlike compound with a distending electron cloud.

The D3d and D2d isomers of the Li3-O-Li3 molecule are metal-nonmetal-metal sandwichlike structures that contain two Li3 superalkali atoms. Their geometries and the real frequencies are obtained at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ level. They are different from the traditional types of the nonmetal-metal-nonmetal sandwich compounds. The natural bond orbital calculation and the topological property nabla2rho(r) calculation indicate that they are typical ionic compounds. In two isomers, the O2- anion is sandwiched in between two Li3+ cation rings. However, the different orientations of two Li3+ planes give the D3d isomer its own special characteristics. Under the action of the O2- anion in the center, the valence electrons of the D3d isomer are pushed out from two Li3+ triangle rings. This special interaction causes three phenomena. First, the valence electron clouds are distended. Second, the vertical ionization energy of the D3d isomer is considerably low, 4.39 eV, so that it may also be viewed as a superalkali atom. Third, we find that the D3d isomer owns the out-of-plane aromaticity and the largest negative nucleus-independent chemical shift value (-10.8 ppm) exists at 2.5 A above the center of the Li3+ ring, not at the center of the Li3+ ring like the isolated aromatic Li3+ cation.

Enhanced responses of the anterior cingulate cortex neurones to colonic distension in viscerally hypersensitive rats.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is critically involved in processing the affective component of pain sensation. Visceral hypersensitivity is a characteristic of irritable bowel syndrome. Electrophysiological activity of the ACC with regard to visceral sensitization has not been characterized. Single ACC neuronal activities in response to colorectal distension (CRD) were recorded in control, sham-treated rats and viscerally hypersensitive (EA) rats (induced by chicken egg albumin injection, i.p). The ACC neurones of controls failed to respond to 10 or 30 mmHg CRD; only 22% were activated by 50 mmHg CRD. Among the latter, 16.4% exhibited an excitatory response to CRD and were labelled 'CRD-excited' neurones. In contrast, CRD (10, 30 and 50 mmHg) markedly increased ACC neuronal responses of EA rats (10%, 28% and 47%, respectively). CRD produced greater pressure-dependent increases in ACC spike firing rates in EA rats compared with controls. Splanchnicectomy combined with pelvic nerve section abolished ACC responses to CRD in EA rats. Spontaneous activity in CRD-excited ACC neurones was significantly higher in EA rats than in controls. CRD-excited ACC neurones in control and EA rats (7 of 16 (42%) and 8 of 20 (40%), respectively) were activated by transcutaneous electrical and thermal stimuli. However, ACC neuronal activity evoked by noxious cutaneous stimuli did not change significantly in EA rats. This study identifies CRD-responsive neurones in the ACC and establishes for the first time that persistence of a heightened visceral afferent nociceptive input to the ACC induces ACC sensitization, characterized by increased spontaneous activity of CRD-excited neurones, decreased CRD pressure threshold, and increased response magnitude. Enhanced ACC nociceptive transmission in viscerally hypersensitive rats is restricted to visceral afferent input.

The array and interfacial activity of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and sodium oleate at the oil/water interface.

There is a close correlation between the interfacial activity and the adsorption of the surfactant at the interface, but the detailed molecular standard information was scarce. The interfacial activity of two traditional anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium oleate (OAS) were studied by experimental and computer simulation methods. With the spinning drop method and the suspension drop method, the interfacial tension of oil/aqueous surfactant systems was measured, and the influence of surfactant concentration and salinity on the interfacial tension was investigated. The dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method was used to simulate the adsorption of SDBS and OAS at the oil/water interface. It was shown that it is beneficial to decrease interfacial tension if the hydrophobic chains of the surfactant and the oil have similar structure. The accession of inorganic salts causes surfactant molecules to form more compact and ordered arrangements and helps to decrease the interfacial tension. There is an osculation relation between interfacial density and interfacial activity. The interfacial density calculated by molecular simulation is an effective parameter to exhibit the interfacial activity.

The structure and the large nonlinear optical properties of Li@calix[4]pyrrole.

A new compound with electride characteristics, Li@calix[4]pyrrole, is designed in theory. The Li atom in Li@calix[4]pyrrole is ionized to form a cation and an excess electron anion. Its structure with C(4v) symmetry resembles a cup-like shape. It may be a stable organic electride at room temperature. The first hyperpolarizability of the cup-like electride molecule is first investigated by the DFT (B3LYP) method. The result shows that this electride molecule has a considerably large first hyperpolarizability with beta(0) = 7326 au (63.3 x 10(-30) esu), while the beta(0) value of the related calix[4]pyrrole system is only 390 au. Obviously, the Li atom doped in calix[4]pyrrole brings a dramatic change to the electronic structure, so that the first hyperpolarizability of Li@calix[4]pyrrole is almost 20 times larger than that of calix[4]pyrrole. We find that the excess electron from the Li atom plays an important role in the large first hyperpolarizability of Li@calix[4]pyrrole. The present investigation reveals a new idea and different means for designing and synthesizing high-performance NLO materials.
