Cyano-bridged pentanuclear Fe(III)3M(II)2 (M = Ni, Co, Fe) clusters: synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties.

The reactions of [M(II)(Tpm(Me))(H2O)3]2+ (M = Ni, Co, Fe; Tpm(Me) = tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazoyl)methane) with [Bu4N][(Tp)Fe(III)(CN)3] (Bu4N+ = tetrabutylammonium cation; Tp = tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) in MeCN-Et2O afford three pentanuclear cyano-bridged clusters, [(Tp)3(Tpm(Me))2Fe(III)3M(II)2(CN)9]ClO4.15H2O (M = Ni, 1; M = Co, 2) and [(Tp)3(Tpm(Me))2Fe(III)3Fe(II)2(CN)9]BF4.15H2O (3). Single-crystal X-ray analyses reveal that they show the same trigonal bipyramidal structure featuring a D3h-symmetry core, in which two opposing Tpm(Me)-ligated M(II) ions situated in the two apical positions are linked through cyanide bridges to an equatorial triangle of three Tp-ligated Fe(III) (S = 1/2) centers. Magnetic studies for complex 1 show ferromagnetic coupling giving an S = 7/2 ground state and an appreciable magnetic anisotropy with a negative D(7/2) value equal to -0.79 cm(-1). Complex 2 shows zero-field splitting parameters deducted from the magnetization data with D = -1.33 cm(-1) and g = 2.81. Antiferromagnetic interaction was observed in complex 3.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of cyano-bridged heterobimetallic chains based on [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]-.

With the use of the tailored cyanometalate precursor, (Bu4N)[(Tp)Fe(CN)3] (Tp = Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) as the building block to react with fully solvated Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) cations, four one-dimensional (1D) heterobimetallic cyano-bridged chain complexes of squares, [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(CH3OH).2CH3OH]n (1), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(DMF).DMF]n (2), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6M(CH3OH)2.2CH3OH]n (M = Co (3) and Ni (4)), have been prepared. In complexes 1 and 2, the Cu(II) ions are pentacoordinated in the form of a slightly distorted square-based pyramid, and they are linked by distorted octahedrons of [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form 1D chains of squares. In complexes 3 and 4, both the central Co(II) and Ni(II) ions have a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry, and they are bridged by [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form similar 1D chains of squares. There are weak interchain pi-pi stacking interactions through the pyrazolyl groups of the Tp ligands for complexes 3 and 4. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit intrachain ferromagnetic coupling and single-chain magnets behavior, and the blocking temperature is ca. 6 K for complex 1 and ca. 3 K for complex 2. Complexes 3 and 4 show significant metamagnetic behavior, where the cyanides mediate the intrachain ferromagnetic coupling between Fe(III) and Co(II) or Ni(II) ions and the interchain pi-pi stacking interactions lead to antiferromagnetic couplings. The field dependence of the magnetization measurements shows that the critical field is around 1 kOe for complex 3 and 0.8 kOe for complex 4 at 1.8 K.

Cadmium(II) and copper(II) complexes with imidazole-containing tripodal polyamine ligands: pH and anion effects on carbon dioxide fixation and assembling.

A new Cd(II) complex [Cd3(L)3(mu3-CO3)](ClO4)4.2CH3CN (1) with two-dimensional (2D) network structure was obtained by reaction of an imidazole-containing tripodal polyamine ligand N1-(2-aminoethyl)-N1-(2-imidazolethyl)-ethane-1,2-diamine (L) with Cd(ClO4)2.6H2O at pH 9.0 in air. The carbonate anions (CO3(2-)) are from the hydration of the atmospheric carbon dioxide, which is the same as in the previously reported Cu(II) complex [Cu3(L)3(mu3-CO3)](ClO4)4.3CH3CN (2). However, the coordination mode of CO3(2-) in 1 is mu3-eta2:eta2:eta2 while the one in 2 is mu3-eta1:eta1:eta1. One-dimensional (1D) chain Cd(II) and Cu(II) complexes [Cd(L)Cl]ClO4.H2O (3) and [Cu(L)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (4) without CO3(2-) were prepared by a similar method as that for 1 and 2 except for the different reaction pH, namely, 3 and 4 were obtained at pH 7 while 1 and 2 were obtained at pH 9. In addition, when Cu(NO3)2 was used to react with L at pH 9, a unique 1D double-stranded helical chain complex [Cu(L)Cl]NO3.1.25H2O (5) was obtained. The results revealed that the reaction pH and the counteranion have great impact on the carbon dioxide absorption and hydration as well as on the assembling and structure of the complexes. The magnetic property of complex 2 was investigated in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K, and weak ferromagnetic coupling among the mu3-eta1:eta1:eta1-CO3(2-) bridged Cu(II) atoms was observed.

Chiral molecule-based ferrimagnets with helical structures.

Two enantiopure one-dimensional complexes with helical structures, [Mn(3)((R,R)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (1) and [Mn(3)((S,S)-Salcy)(3)(H2O)(2)Fe(CN)(6).2H2O]n (2) [Salcy = N,N'-(1,2-cyclohexanediylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion], have been synthesized and characterized. Magnetic studies show that both complexes are ferrimagnets with the magnetic transition temperature at 3 K.

Symmetry-based magnetic anisotropy in the trigonal bipyramidal cluster [Tp2(Me3tacn)3Cu3Fe2(CN)6]4+.

Reaction of [(Me3tacn)Cu(H2O)2]2+ (Me3tacn = N,N',N' '-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) with [TpFe(CN)3]- (Tp- = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate) in a mixture of ethanol and acetonitrile affords the pentanuclear cluster [Tp2(Me3tacn)3Cu3Fe2(CN)6]4+. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals a trigonal bipyramidal structure featuring a D3h-symmetry core in which two opposing FeIII (S = 1/2) centers are linked through cyanide bridges to an equatorial triangle of three CuII (S = 1/2) centers. Fits to variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility data are consistent with ferromagnetic coupling to give an S = 5/2 ground state, while fits to low-temperature magnetization data indicate the presence of a large axial zero-field splitting (D = -5.7 cm-1). Frequency dependence observed in the ac magnetic susceptibility data confirms single-molecule magnet behavior, with an effective spin reversal barrier of Ueff = 16 cm-1. When compared with the much lower anisotropy barrier previously observed for the face-centered cubic cluster [Tp8(H2O)6Cu6Fe8(CN)6]4+, the results demonstrate the enormous influence of the geometry in which a given set of metal ions are arranged.

Weak antiferromagnetic coupling for novel linear hexanuclear nickel(II) string complexes (Ni6 12+) and partial metal-metal bonds in their one-electron reduction products (Ni6 11+).

The preparation, crystal structures, magnetic properties and electrochemistry of novel linear hexanuclear nickel string complexes (Ni6(12+)) and their corresponding 1-e(-) reduction products (Ni6(11+)) are reported. In these complexes, the hexanickel chain is in a symmetrical arrangement (approximately D(4) symmetry) and is helically supported by four bpyany(2-) ligands [bpyany(2-) = the dianion of 2,7-bis(alpha-pyridylamino)-1,8-naphthyridine]. The Ni6(12+) complexes show that the two terminal nickel ions have high-spin states (S = 1) and the four inner ones have low-spin states (S = 0). The two terminal nickel ions exhibit weak antiferromagnetic coupling of ca.-5 cm(-1). All of Ni6(12+) complexes display three reversible redox couples at about -0.70, -0.20 and +1.10 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The first reduction wave at about -0.20 V suggests facility of 1-e(-) reduction for the Ni(6)(12+) compounds. The reaction of Ni(6)(12+) complexes with hydrazine afforded the 1-e(-) reduction products (Ni6(11+)). As far as we are aware, the shortest bond distance of 2.202 A with a partial metal-metal bond was observed in Ni6(11+) compounds. The magnetic results of these Ni6(11+) compounds are in agreement with a localized model, in which the two terminal nickel ions are in a spin state of S = 1 whereas the central Ni3-Ni4 pair in a spin state of S = 1/2. The N6(11+) compounds show relatively strong antiferromagnetic coupling of about 60 cm(-1) between the terminal and the central dinickel ions.

Dinuclear and layered copper 2-pyridylphosphonates with weak ferromagnetism observed in layer compound Cu(C5H4NPO3).

This paper reports the syntheses and structures of three new copper phosphonates based on 2-pyridylphosphonate, namely, Cu(C(5)H(4)NPO(3)H)2 (1), Cu3(OH)2(C(5)H(4)NPO(3))2.2H2O (2) and Cu(C(5)H(4)NPO(3)) (3). Compound 1 has a discrete dimeric structure in which the {CuO(4)N} square pyramids are linked by the {CPO(3)} tetrahedra through corner-sharing. The dimers are further connected into a chain through hydrogen bonds. In compound 2, edge-sharing {Cu(1)O(4)N} square pyramids and {Cu(2)O(4)} planes are found to form an infinite chain with composition {Cu(3)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-O)(4)}. Neighboring chains are linked by the phosphonate groups of the 2-pyridylphosphonate ligands, resulting in inorganic layers containing 4-, 8- and 12-membered rings. The pyridyl groups and the lattice water molecules occupy the inter-layer space. In compound 3, the {Cu(1)O(4)} and {Cu(2)O(2)N(2)} planes are each corner-shared with the {CPO(3)} tetrahedra, forming an inorganic layer containing 8- and 16-membered rings. The pyridyl groups reside between the layers. Crystal data for 1: space group P(-)1, a = 8.4045(19), b = 8.751(2), c = 10.632(2) A, alpha = 66.673(4), beta = 72.566(4), gamma = 70.690(4) degrees , V = 664.7(2) A(3), Z = 2. Crystal data for 2: space group P2(1)/c, a = 7.9544(17), b = 21.579(4), c = 5.0243(10) A, beta = 105.332(3) degrees , V = 831.7(3) A(3), Z = 2. Crystal data for 3: space group P2(1)/c, a = 4.7793(11), b = 15.319(3), c = 8.6022(19) A, beta = 97.156(4) degrees , V = 624.9(2) A(3), Z = 4. Magnetic measurements reveal that dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are propagated between the copper centers in compounds 1-3. For 3, spin canting is observed with a ferromagnetic transition occurring at 9 K.

Syntheses, structures, near-infrared and visible luminescence, and magnetic properties of lanthanide-organic frameworks with an imidazole-containing flexible ligand.

Reactions of tripodal ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (L) with lanthanide metal salts and triethyl orthoformate led to the formation of six bowl-like dinuclear compounds [Ln2(L)(HL)(NO3)6(HCOO)].3CH3OH (Ln = Gd 1, Tb 2, Dy 3, Er 4, Yb 5, and Eu 6). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that six complexes are isomorphous and isostructural and that the dinuclear molecules are further connected by hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions, resulting in 3D channel-like structures. The luminescence properties have been studied, and the results showed that the Tb(III) (2) and Eu(III) (6) complexes exhibited sensitized luminescence in the visible region and their luminescence lifetimes in powder and DMSO-d6 solution are in the range of milliseconds. The Yb(III) complex (5) emits typical near-infrared luminescence in DMSO-d6 solution. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-6 showed that complex 1 (Gd) is nearly a paramagnet and complexes 2 (Tb), 3 (Dy), and 4 (Er) show the ferromagnetic coupling between magnetic centers, whereas the depopulation of the Stark levels in complexes 5 (Yb) and 6 (Eu) leads to a continuous decrease in (chi M)T when the sample is cooled from 300 to 1.8 K.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of cyano-bridged heterobimetallic complexes based on [Fe(bpca)(CN)3]-.

Two new cyano-bridged one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers, [(bpca)(2)Fe(III)(2)(CN)(6)Cu(H(2)O)(2).1.5H(2)O](n)() (2) and [(bpca)Fe(III)(CN)(3)Cu(bpca)(H(2)O).H(2)O](n)() (3), and a trinuclear complex, [(bpca)(2)Fe(III)(2)(CN)(6)Mn(CH(3)OH)(2)(H(2)O)(2)].2H(2)O (4), have been synthesized using the tailored tricyanometalate precursor (Bu(4)N)[Fe(bpca)(CN)(3)].H(2)O (1) (Bu(4)N(+) = tetrabutylammonium cation; bpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amidate anion) as a building block and structurally characterized. In complex 2, the Cu(II) ions are six-coordinated in an elongated distorted octahedral environment, and they are linked by distorted octahedrons of [Fe(bpca)(CN)(3)](-) to form 1D chain of squares. Complex 3 is an unexpected chiral heterobimetallic helical chain complex, in which the helical chain consists of the asymmetric unit of [(bpca)Fe(CN)(3)Cu(bpca)(H(2)O)]. In complex 4, there are two independent trinuclear clusters in one asymmetric unit, and the coordination modes of the two methanol and two water molecules coordinating to the central Mn(II) ion are different (cis and trans). Complex 2 shows metamagnetic behavior with a Neel temperature of T(N) = 2.2 K and a critical field of 250 Oe at 1.8 K, where the cyanides mediate the intrachain ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions. Complex 3 shows ferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions, the best-fit for chi(M)T versus T using a 1D alternating chain model leads to the parameters J(1) = 7.9(3) cm(-)(1), J(2) = 1.03(2) cm(-)(1), and g = 2.196(3). Complex 4 exhibits ferrimagnetic behavior caused by the noncompensation of the local interacting spins (S(Mn) = 5/2 and S(Fe) = 1/2) which interact antiferromagnetically through bridging cyano groups.

Dodecanuclear manganese(III) phosphonates with cage structures.

Treatments of Mn(O(2)CR)(2) (R = Me, Ph) with NBu(4)MnO(4) in CH(3)CN or CH(3)CN/CH(2)Cl(2) in the presence of acetic acid, delta(1)-cyclohexenephosphonic acid (C(6)H(9)PO(3)H(2)), and 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline result in three novel dodecamanganese(III) clusters [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CMe)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(bipy)(3)] (1), [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CPh)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(bipy)(3)] (2), and [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CPh)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(phen)(3)] (3). They have a similar Mn(12) core of [Mn(III)(12)(mu(4)-O)(3)(mu(3)-O)(5)(mu-O(3)P)(3)] with a new type of topologic structure. Solid-state dc magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1-3 reveal that dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are propagated between the magnetic centers. The ac magnetic measurements suggest an S = 2 ground state for compounds 1 and 3 and an S = 3 ground state for compound 2.

One-dimensional azido-bridged chiral metal complexes with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interactions: syntheses, structures, and magnetic studies.

One-dimensional chiral copper(II) and manganese(II) coordination polymers with single asymmetric end-to-end (EE) azide bridges, [Cu(R-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (1), [Cu(S-L)2 (N3)]n(ClO4)n (2), [Mn(R-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (3), and [Mn(S-L)2(N3)]n(ClO4)n (4) (R-L or S-L = R- or S-pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-imine), have been synthesized, using azide ions as bridging groups and chiral Schiff bases as auxiliary ligands, and characterized. The crystal structure determination of complexes 1 and 2 reveals the formation of one-dimensional chiral chains, in which the central Cu(II) ion is six-coordinate in the form of an elongated octahedron. Complex 3 consists of chiral helical polymeric chains, in which the central Mn(II) has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. They all crystallize in the chiral space group P2(1). Complexes 1 and 2 are rare examples that exhibit ferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions through the single end-to-end azido bridge. Fitting the susceptibility data for 1 using a 1D uniform chain model led to the parameters J = 0.70(3) cm(-1), g = 2.06(2), and zj' = 0.07(2) cm(-1). The magnetic studies on 3 and 4 show that there is weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the manganese(II) ions.

Electroporation-mediated transformation of Aeromonas hydrophila.

A strain of Aeromonas hydrophila producing copolyesters of 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyhexanoate, abbreviated as PHBHHx, was successfully transformed by electroporation. The plasmid used was a broad host range plasmid pBBR1MCS. Electroporation conditions were varied systemically to develop an electroporation protocol. The optimal yield of transformant was approximately 4x10(2) CFU/microg DNA at 12.5 kV/cm and 1000 Omega, resulting in a time constant of approximately 5 ms. The A. hydrophila transformants expressed plasmid-encoded resistance to chloromphenicol. Plasmid DNA in the A. hydrophila transformant was stably maintained. This is the first report of transformation of bacteria A. hydrophila.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of mixed-valent diruthenium(II,III) diphosphonates with discrete and one-dimensional structures.

Four mixed-valent ruthenium diphosphonates, namely, Na(4)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)X]x16H(2)O [X = Cl (1), Br (2)], K(3)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]x6H(2)O (3), and Na(7)[Ru(2)(hedp)(2)Fe(CN)(6)]x24H(2)O (4), where hedp represents 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate [CH(3)C(OH)(PO(3))(2)](4-), were synthesized and structurally characterized. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 show linear chain structures in which the mixed-valent [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) dimers are linked by X(-) or [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) bridges. Compound 3 contains discrete species of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](3-) where the axial positions of [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) paddlewheel are terminated by water molecules. Magnetic studies show that significant antiferromagnetic exchanges are mediated between the [Ru(2)(hedp)(2)](3-) (S = 3/2) units through halide bridges in compounds 1 and 2.

Three-, two-, and one-dimensional metal phosphonates based on [hydroxy(4-pyridyl)methyl]phosphonate: M{(4-C5H4N)CH(OH)PO3}(H2O) (M = Ni, Cd) and Gd{(4-C5H4N)CH(OH)P(OH)O2}3.6H2O.

Based on the [hydroxy(4-pyridyl)methyl]phosphonate ligand, three compounds with formula Ni{(4-C(5)H(4)N)CH(OH)PO(3)}(H(2)O) (1), Cd{(4-C(5)H(4)N)CH(OH)PO(3)}(H(2)O) (2), and Gd{(4-C(5)H(4)N)CH(OH)P(OH)O(2)}(3).6H(2)O (3) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal data for 1 are as follows: orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 8.7980(13) A, b = 10.1982(15) A, and c = 17.945(3) A. For 2 the crystal data are as follows: monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 23.344(6) Angstroms, b = 5.2745(14) Angstroms, c = 16.571(4) Angstroms, and beta = 121.576(4) degrees. The crystal data for 3 are as follows: rhombohedral, space group R, a = 22.2714(16) Angstroms, b = 22.2714(16) Angstroms, and c = 9.8838(11) Angstroms. Compound 1 adopts a three-dimensional pillared layered structure in which the inorganic layers made up of corner-sharing {NiO(5)N} octahedra and {CPO(3)} tetrahedra are connected by pyridyl groups. A two-dimensional layer structure is found in compound 2, which contains alternating inorganic double chains and pyridyl rings. Compound 3 has a one-dimensional chain structure where the Gd atoms are triply bridged by O-P-O linkages. The pyridyl nitrogen atom in 3 remains uncoordinated and is involved in the interchain hydrogen bonds. Magnetic susceptibility studies of 1 and 3 reveal that weak ferromagnetic interactions are mediated between Ni(II) centers in compound 1. For compound 3, the behavior is principally paramagnetic.
