Syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of novel manganese(II) complexes with flexible tripodal ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene.

Two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)--[Mn(titmb)(N3)2] x 1.5H2O (1) and [Mn3(titmb)2(C2O4)3(H2O)] x 10H2O (2)--were obtained by reactions of the flexible tripodal ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (titmb) with Mn(OAc)2 x 4H2O, together with NaN3 and K2C2O4, respectively. The structures of these MOFs were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal data for 1 were as follows: monoclinic, C2/c, a = 20.956(13) A, b = 9.884(6) A, c = 24.318(14) A, beta = 95.87(5) degrees, Z = 8. The crystal data for 2 were as follows: triclinic, P1, a = 12.400(9) A, b = 16.827(12) A, c = 17.196(11) A, alpha = 66.35(5), beta = 95.87(5) degrees, gamma = 71.03(6), Z = 2. Complex 1 is a novel noninterpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) framework, in which the azide ligand connects Mn(II) atoms in an end-to-end (EE) mode to give [Mn-N-N-N-]n infinite one-dimensional (1D) chains, and complex 2 has a two-dimensional (2D) network structure in which the Mn(II) ions are linked by the oxalate anions to form 1D [Mn(C2O4)]n chains. Each titmb in these two complexes connects three metal atoms and serves as a three-connecting ligand. The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were investigated. The results showed that the antiferromagnetic interactions occurred between the Mn(II) ions linked by the azide ligands in complex 1, and those linked by the oxalate anions and the carboxylate in syn-anti coordination mode in complex 2. The entirely different structures of complexes 1 and 2, on one hand, indicate that the azide and the oxalate ligands affected the structures of MOFs greatly, and on the other hand, reveals the potential applications of MOFs with the azide and oxalate ligands, which are efficient magnetic couplers.

Syntheses, crystal structures and properties of novel copper(II) complexes obtained by reactions of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate with tripodal ligands.

Three novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cu(1)SO4].H2O (4), [Cu2(2)2(SO4)2].4H2O (5) and [Cu(3)(H2O)]SO4.5.5H2O (6), were obtained by hydrothermal reactions of CuSO4.5H2O with the corresponding ligands, which have different flexibility. The structures of the synthesized complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Complex 4 has a 2D network structure with two types of metallacycles. Complex 5 also has a 2D network structure in which each independent 2D sheet contains two sub-layers bridged by oxygen atoms of the sulfate anions. Complex 6 has a 2D puckered structure in which the sulfate anions serve as counter anions, which are different from those in complexes 4 (terminators) and 5 (bridges). The different structures of complexes 4, 5 and 6 indicate that the nature of organic ligands affected the structures of the assemblies greatly. The magnetic behavior of complex 5 and anion-exchange properties of complex 6 were investigated.

The observation of superparamagnetic behavior in molecular nanowires.

Using the anionic precursor [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]-, a new one-dimensional Ising cyanide-bridged chain, [(Tp)2FeIII2(CN)6Cu(CH3OH).2CH3OH]n, has been prepared. The crystal structure and magnetic studies demonstrate that it is a single-chain magnet and the blocking temperature is ca. 6 K.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of two cyano-bridged tungstate(V)-manganese(II) bimetallic magnets.

The reaction of manganese acetate with octacyanotungastate in an aqueous solution of concentrated acetic acid gives two new three-dimensional cyano-bridged manganese(II)-tungstate(V) bimetallic assemblies, [Mn(II)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(CH(3)COO)][W(V)(CN)(8)].2H(2)O (1) (tetragonal space group I4/mcm, a = b = 11.9628(9) A, c = 13.367(2) A, and Z = 4) and Cs(I)(0.5)Mn(II)(2)[W(V)(CN)(8)](CH(3)CO(2))(1.5).H(2)O (2) (monoclinic space group C2/c, a = 16.274(2) A, b = 22.948(6) A, c = 13.196(1) A, beta = 128.040(6) degrees, and Z = 8). In complex 1, W(V)(CN)(8) adopts a square antiprismatic geometry, and each CN group coordinates to the Mn(II) ions forming W-Mn(4)-W-Mn(4)-...columnar linkages where four sites on the Mn(II) ion with octahedral geometry are occupied by CN groups. The columns are parallel and interlock, yielding a network structure. Complex 2 contains two different coordination geometries for W(V)(CN)(8), namely, square antiprismatic and dodecahedral. The columnar structures appear also in 2, where the Mn(II) ions in two different environments provide three and four coordinated sites to the CN groups. The columns are bridged by both dodecahedral W(V)(CN)(8) groups and acetates. Cs ions were intercalated in the lattice by the formation of short attractive contacts with the acetates. The field-cooled magnetization, ac susceptibility, and the field dependence of magnetization measurements show that both 1 and 2 are ferrimagnets with ordering temperatures 40 and 45 K, respectively. The investigation of the magnetostructural correlation shows that the ferrimagnetic ordering in 1 and 2 are attributed to the dominant antiferromagnetic exchange pathways d(z)2(W)-d(x')(y')(Mn) and d(x)2(-y)2(W) - d(x')(y')(Mn).

Unusual magnetic property associated with dimerization within a nickel tetramer.

A new ion-pair complex, 1-benzyl-4-aminopyridinium bis(maleonitriledithiolato)nickelate(III) (1), has been synthesized. The variable magnetic susceptibility results of 1 show a discontinuity around 184 K, which is phenomenologically similar to that observed for first-row transition metal complexes undergoing a spin crossover transition. The crystal structure analyses of 1 at high and low temperatures indicate that this unusual magnetic property is associated with a packing structure that changes from tetrameric spin clusters to dimers between neighboring spin carriers.

Unusual magnetic properties of one-dimensional molecule-based magnets associated with a structural phase transition.

Three ion-pair complexes, [RbzPy](+)[Ni(mnt)(2)](-) (mnt(2)(-) = maleonitriledithiolate; [RbzPy](+) = 4-R-benzylpyridinium; R = Br (1), Cl (2), and NO(2) (3)), with unusual magnetic properties have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 have been solved. The two complexes belong to the P2(1)/c space group with Z = 4 and C(20)H(11)BrN(5)NiS(4), a = 12.0744(17) A, b = 26.369(4) A, c = 7.440(3) A, and beta = 102.63(3) degrees for 1 and C(20)H(11)ClN(5)NiS(4), a = 12.105(2) A, b = 26.218(4) A, c = 7.374(2) A, and beta = 102.55(2) degrees for 2, respectively. The [Ni(mnt)(2)](-) anions in 1-3 form uniformly spaced one-dimensional (1-D) magnetic chains of s = 1/2 at room temperature. The temperature dependences of the susceptibility for 1-3 show that they undergo phase transitions. All three complexes are paramagnetic in their high-temperature (abbreviation HT) phase and diamagnetic in the low-temperature (abbreviation LT) phase because of strong dimerization along the stacking direction. The results of thermal analysis (DSC) further confirm that the phase transition for 1 and 2 is first-order but maybe second-order for 3. The phenomena observed in this study are similar to those of the 1-D radical systems.
