High-performance low-cost organic field-effect transistors with chemically modified bottom electrodes.

The characteristics of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) were dramatically improved by chemically modifying the surface of the bottom-contact Ag or Cu source-drain (D-S) electrodes with a simple solution method. The contact resistance and energetic mismatch typically observed with Ag D-S electrodes in pentacene bottom-contact OFETs can be properly eliminated when modified by the Ag-TCNQ (TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane). The pentacene transistors with low-cost Ag-TCNQ-modified Ag bottom-contact electrodes exhibit outstanding electrical properties, which are comparable with that of the Au top-contact devices. It thus provides a novel way toward high-performance low-cost bottom-contact OFETs.

A cyclic triphenylamine dimer for organic field-effect transistors with high performance.

A cyclic ethylene linked triphenylamine dimer formed highly crystalline thin film via vapor deposition. Meanwhile, the corresponding linear molecule only resulted in amorphous films under the same condition. The performance as FET semiconductor also improved significantly when the molecular structure derived from linear to cyclic type. The cyclic molecule displayed mobilities in excess of 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 and high on/off ratios up to 107.

1-Imino nitroxide pyrene for high performance organic field-effect transistors with low operating voltage.

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) fabricated with vapor-deposited films of 1-imino nitroxide pyrene show excellent p-type FET characteristics, with mobility up to 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an on/off ratio of nearly 5 x 104. Most remarkable feature of the FETs is their low operating voltage due to the low threshold voltage (about -0.6 V) and inverse subthreshold slope (about 540 mV decade-1).

Controlling the growth of single crystalline nanoribbons of copper tetracyanoquinodimethane for the fabrication of devices and device arrays.

In this paper, (1) a simple and controllable method to synthesize single crystalline nanoribbons of CuTCNQ in a large area was demonstrated by using a physical and chemical vapor combined deposition technique. (2) Nanoribbons synthesized by this method were identified to belong to phase I. (3) Devices and device arrays of nanoribbons were in situ fabricated by this method using gap electrodes and gap electrode arrays. (4) Current-voltage characteristics of crystalline devices and device arrays of nanoribbons exhibited semiconductor properties, and this conclusion was further confirmed by the results of devices based on an individual nanoribbon or microribbon of CuTCNQ (phase I). The controllable synthesis of nanoribbons for the in situ fabrication of crystalline nanodevices and device arrays will be attractive for nanoelectronics. Moreover, semiconductor current-voltage characteristics of the nanoribbons will be beneficial to the understanding of CuTCNQ.

Balanced carrier transports of electrons and holes in silole-based compounds--a theoretical study.

By employing a diabatic model and a first-principle direct method, we have investigated the carrier transport properties of the highly efficient organic light-emitting materials 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole (HPS) and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylsilole (MPPS). The electronic coupling constants and reorganization energies are calculated for a wide variety of nearest-neighbor charge transfer pathways. The theoretical calculations show that (i) the electron mobility is very close to that of the hole, which indicates a balanced carrier transport in these materials, and (ii) the carrier mobilities for MPPS are larger than those for HPS. These results help explain the underlying microscopic mechanism for the high electroluminescence efficiency.

X-shaped oligothiophenes as a new class of electron donors for bulk-heterojunction solar cells.

Four X-shaped oligothiophenes with different conjugation length were investigated as novel electron donors in single-layer bulk-heterojunction solar cells. The UV-vis absorption spectra of blends of compounds 1-4 with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl[6,6]C(61) show a remarkably red shift and broadening with increasing thiophene number at each of the four branches. The performance of the photovoltaic cells varied significantly with molecular structures of the four oligothiophenes. Conversion efficiencies increased from 0.008% to 0.8% with changing the electron donors from 1 to 4. The maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the device based on 4 reaches 31.6%, much higher than those of three other compounds 1-3. Remarkable improvement of the device performance was achieved with increasing the substituted thiophene number. The results show that the photovoltaic effect is dependent on the structural characteristics and the film forming abilities of the X-shaped thiophenes.

Suzuki coupling reaction of 1,6,7,12-tetrabromoperylene bisimide.

1,6,7,12-Tetrabromoperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisanhydride and the corresponding tetrabrominated perylene bisimide were first synthesized with high yields. The Suzuki coupling reaction of novel tetrabromoperylene bisimide with phenylbonoric acid was studied. The four bromines in the bay position of the perylene core were substituted successfully to yield 1,6,7,12-teraphenylperylene bisimide. The photochemical properties of the novel perylene bisimides were studied and presented.

Electron transport in self-assembled polymer molecular junctions.

A molecular junction of a poly(p-phenyleneethynylene)s derivative with thioacetate end groups (TA-PPE) was fabricated by self-assembling. Nanogap electrodes made by electroplating technique was used to couple thiol end groups of TA-PPE molecules. Room temperature current-voltage characteristics of the molecular junction exhibited highly periodic, repeatable, and identical stepwise features. First-principles calculations suggest that one possibility for the equidistant step is due to the opening of different conducting channels that corresponds to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of the polymer in the junction. It is interesting to see that an 18 nm long polymer is of quantized electronic structures and behaves like a quantum transport device.

A new method to synthesize complicated multi-branched carbon nanotubes with controlled architecture and composition.

Here we develop a simple method by using flow fluctuation to synthesize arrays of multi-branched carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are far more complex than those previously reported. The architectures and compositions can be well controlled, thus avoiding any template or additive. A branching mechanism of fluctuation-promoted coalescence of catalyst particles is proposed. This finding will provide a hopeful approach to the goal of CNT-based integrated circuits and be valuable for applying branched junctions in nanoelectronics and producing branched junctions of other materials.

Synthesis of noble metal/carbon nanotube composites in supercritical methanol.

A simple and efficient route has been employed to deposit noble metal nanoparticles (Pt, Ru, Pt-Ru, Rh, Ru-Sn) onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in supercritical methanol solution. In this method, the inorganic metallic salts acted as metal precursors, and methanol as solvent as well as reductant for the precursors. The as-prepared nanocomposites were structurally and morphologically characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. It was demonstrated that the CNTs were decorated by crystalline metal nanoparticles with uniform sizes and a narrow particle size distribution. The size and loading content of the nanoparticles on CNTs could be tuned by manipulating reaction parameters. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the composites was also discussed.

High performance organic field-effect transistors based on amphiphilic tris(phthalocyaninato) rare earth triple-decker complexes.

LB films of three amphiphilic tris(phthalocyaninato) rare earth triple-decker complexes with crown-ethers as hydrophilic heads and long alkyl chains as hydrophobic tails have been prepared and found to display very well ordered layer structures, as proved by pi-A isotherms, UV-vis and polarized absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction experiments, and microscopic morphology characterization. These LB films have been fabricated into field-effect transistor (FET) devices, which show carrier mobilities as high as 0.24-0.60 cm2 V-1 s-1, among the highest mobilities achieved thus far for all LB film-based OFETs.

A highly pi-stacked organic semiconductor for field-effect transistors based on linearly condensed pentathienoacene.

We present the synthesis and characterization of a fused-ring compound, dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']thieno[3,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (pentathienoacene, PTA). In contrast to pentacene, PTA has a larger band gap than most semiconductors used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and therefore is expected to be stable in air. The large pi-conjugated and planar molecular structure of PTA would also form higher molecular orders that are conductive for carrier transport. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy experiments on its films show that the molecules stack in layers with their long axis upright from the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that there are no chemical bonds at the PTA/Au interface. OFETs based on the PTA have been constructed, and their performances as p-type semiconductors are also presented. A high mobility of 0.045 cm(2)/V s and an on/off ratio of 10(3) for a PTA OFET have been achieved, demonstrating the potential of PTA for application in future organic electronics.

Fiber-Bragg-grating force sensor based on a wavelength-switching actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser.

A fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) transverse-force sensor based on a wavelength-switching actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed, in which a FBG is used as both the sensing element and the wavelength-selection element of the laser. When a force is applied to the FBG, the induced birefringence in the FBG causes the laser to emit pulses at two close wavelengths, whose separation is proportional to the applied force. To suppress the interference between the two wavelengths, the laser is made to emit at the two wavelengths alternately by use of a polarization-switching technique. The wavelength separation is converted into a time difference by transmission of the laser pulses through a dispersive single-mode fiber, so the wavelength measurement is replaced by the less-expensive time measurement. The output of the sensor is insensitive to temperature and axial strain changes along the FBG. To interrogate similar FBG sensing elements connected in series it is necessary only to change the modulating frequency of an electro-optic modulator to select the corresponding laser cavity. The practicability of this approach was demonstrated experimentally with two multiplexed sensing elements.

Facile route to synthesize multiwalled carbon nanotube/zinc sulfide heterostructures: optical and electrical properties.

A simple method to decorate the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with ZnS nanospheres has been developed. The method involves ultrasonic pretreatment and heat treatments of MWCNTs, zinc chloride, and thiourea in ethanol. The heterostructures have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Comparative experiments show that both ultrasonic treatment and heat treatment are necessary for synthesizing the MWCNTs/ZnS heterostructures. Moreover, a photoluminescence spectrum shows that the MWCNTs/ZnS heterostructures feature a broad blue emission at about 430 nm, indicating that there exists significant ground-state interaction between ZnS nanospheres and MWCNTs. Meanwhile, the current-voltage characteristic of the MWCNTs/ZnS exhibits clear rectifying behavior, revealing charge transfer between MWCNTs and ZnS nanospheres.

Thin-film transistors based on Langmuir-Blodgett films of heteroleptic bis(phthalocyaninato) rare earth complexes.

An ordered molecular assembly of heteroleptic bis(phthalocyaninato) rare earth complexes M(Pc)[Pc(OC8H17)8] [M = Tb, Lu; H2Pc = phthalocyanine; H2Pc(OC8H17)8 = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)phthalocyanine] has been fabricated by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique and characterized by surface pressure-area isotherms, electronic absorption and polarized electronic absorption spectroscopy, low-angle X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. The molecular ordering in the LB multilayer film on SiO2 substrate was made into a p-channel field effect transistor (FET), which was generally operated in the enhanced mode. The energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital as well as the energy band diagram can be deduced from the electrochemical measurement results. The charge mobilities of Tb(Pc)[Pc(OC8H17)8] and Lu(Pc)[Pc(OC8H17)8] were calculated to be about 6.4 x 10(-4) and 1.7 x 10(-3) cm2 V(-1) s(-1), respectively.

n-Type field-effect transistors made of an individual nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotube.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of field-effect transistor based on an individual multiwalled nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube. Our measurements show that the N-doped carbon nanotubes have n-type properties. The contact properties of the tube and Pt electrodes are also studied in detail. Temperature dependence of two-terminal transport experiments suggests that transport is dominated by thermionic emission and tunneling through a 0.2 eV Schottky contact barrier.
