High-performance field-effect transistors based on Langmuir-Blodgett films of cyclo[8]pyrrole.

We demonstrate the field-effect transistors (FETs) made of cyclo[8]pyrrole thin films prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. The cyclo[8]pyrrole molecule possesses a 30-pi-electron system and narrower highest-occupied molecular orbital-lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap (0.63 eV), forms a stable, reproducible monolayer at the air-water interface, and transfers onto a substrate with a nearly unity transfer ratio and face-to-face configuration due to its strong pi-pi interaction. The LB films are uniform characterized by atomic force microscopy and in ordered form confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The FET exhibited high performances with one of the highest hole mobilities (0.68 cm2 V(-1) s(-1)) for thin-film transistors and a high on/off ratio, implying a promising material in the FET family.

Novel electroactive and photoactive molecular materials based on conjugated donor-acceptor structures for optoelectronic device applications.

Four donor-acceptor functionalized molecular materials with symmetrical structures have been synthesized and investigated for their use in optoelectronic applications. These pi-conjugated molecules consist of one electron-donating moiety, for instance, carbazole, triphenylamine, or phenothiazine at the center, and two acceptors at each side. Introduction of different donor moieties decreases the band gaps allowing a fine-tuning of the optical and electrical properties. These materials exhibit multifunctional properties, such as a red light-emitting behavior and a large photovoltaic effect. Red organic light-emitting diodes were fabricated in a facile nondoping configuration based on these materials. Saturated red-emission is observed with a CIE of x = 0.64 and y = 0.33, and an external quantum efficiency of 0.19%. In addition, our first observation of photovoltaic response in the pi-conjugated molecule with donor-acceptor-donor structure is reported. The organic single-component photovoltaic cells were fabricated and characterized. Their open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density are 1.1 V and 0.07 mA cm(-2), respectively. The photovoltaic effect corresponds to the absorption characteristics of the compound and depends on the nature of the electron-donating group.

Generation of picosecond pulses at five close wavelengths by use of a self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode and a spectrum-split fiber Bragg grating.

We have demonstrated simultaneous generation of stable picosecond laser pulses at five close wavelengths at a pulse repetition rate of approximately 2 GHz by using a self-seeding configuration that consisted of a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) with an external cavity formed by a tunable spectrum-split fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The FBG selected only one of the modes of the FPLD and, at the same time, filtered the selected FPLD mode such that the reflection from the FBG, tapped with a directional coupler, provided an output of dual-wavelength pulses and the transmission through the FBG provided an output of three-wavelength pulses. We could change the intensities and the wavelength separations of the pulses by adjusting the modulating radio frequency and the temperature of the FPLD and the separation of the FBG reflection peaks. In our experiments the highest side-mode suppression ratios of the pulses obtained were 44.5 dB for the dual-wavelength output and 25.0 dB for the three-wavelength output. Also, the laser was demonstrated to minimize pulse intensity imbalance and produce equally separated wavelengths (with a wavelength separation of 0.2 nm). This simple laser offers considerable flexibility for various applications.

Structures, electronic states, photoluminescence, and carrier transport properties of 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles.

The excellent electroluminescent (EL) properties of 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles, 1-methyl-1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylsilole (MPPS), and 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole (HPS) have been found. Despite some studies devoted to these materials, very little is known about the real origin of their unique EL properties. Therefore, we investigated the structures, photoluminescence (PL), and charge carrier transport properties of 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles as well as the effect of substituents on these characteristics. The single crystals of the three siloles involving 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole (DMTPS), MPPS, and HPS were grown and their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. Three siloles have nonplanar molecular structures. The substituents at 1,1-positions enhance the steric hindrance and have predominant influence on the twisted degree of phenyl groups at ring carbons. This nonplanar structure reduces the intermolecular interaction and the likelihood of excimer formation, and increases PL efficiency in the solid state. The silole films show high fluorescence quantum yields (75-85%), whereas their dilute solutions exhibit a faint emission. The electronic structures of the three siloles were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) are mainly localized on the silole ring and two phenyl groups at 2,5-positions in all cases, while the LUMOs have a significant orbital density at two exocyclic Si-C bonds. The extremely theoretical studies of luminescent properties were carried out. We calculated the nonradiative decay rate of the first excited state as well as the radiative one. It is found that the faint emission of DMTPS in solutions mainly results from the huge nonradiative decay rate. In solid states, molecular packing can remarkably restrict the intramolecular rotation of the peripheral side phenyl ring, which has a large contribution to the nonradiative transition process. This explains why the 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles in the thin films exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields. The charge carrier mobilities of the MPPS and HPS films were measured using a transient EL technique. We obtained a mobility of 2.1 x 10(-)(6) cm(2)/V.s in the MPPS film at an electric field of 1.2 x 10(6) V/cm. This mobility is comparable to that of Alq(3), which is one of the most extensively used electron transport materials in organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), at the same electric field. The electron mobility of the HPS film is about approximately 1.5 times higher than that of the MPPS film. To the best of our knowledge, this kind of material is one of the most excellent emissive materials that possess both high charge carrier mobility and high PL efficiency in the solid states simultaneously. The excellent EL performances of MPPS and HPS are presumably ascribed to these characteristics.

A self-assembled nano optical switch and transistor based on a rigid conjugated polymer, thioacetyl-end-functionalized poly(para-phenylene ethynylene).

A nanometer-scale optical switch and transistor were fabricated with thioacetyl-end-functionalized poly(para-phenylene ethynylene)s and Au nanogap electrodes by self-assembly. With photoirradiation, the switch can be switched on/off quickly with a switching ratio as high as 1000. Moreover, the device works well as a p-type transistor. With an increase in gate bias, strong conductance oscillation was observed in this self-assembled transistor (under low temperature 147 K), which is very likely due to single-electron charging oscillations arising from electron tunneling through the nanometer-scale transistor.

Molecular and nanoscale materials and devices in electronics.

Over the past several years, there have been many significant advances toward the realization of electronic computers integrated on the molecular scale and a much greater understanding of the types of materials that will be useful in molecular devices and their properties. It was demonstrated that individual molecules could serve as incomprehensibly tiny switch and wire one million times smaller than those on conventional silicon microchip. This has resulted very recently in the assembly and demonstration of tiny computer logic circuits built from such molecular scale devices. The purpose of this review is to provide a general introduction to molecular and nanoscale materials and devices in electronics.

Structures, electronic states, and electroluminescent properties of a zinc(II) 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazolate complex.

Bis(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazolate)zinc (Zn(BTZ)(2)) is one of the best white electroluminescent materials used in organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Despite a large number of studies devoted to this complex, very little is known about its basic molecular and electronic structures and electron transport properties in LEDs. Therefore, we investigate the structures and electroluminescent properties. The unsolvated single crystal of Zn(BTZ)(2) was grown and its crystalline structure was determined from X-ray diffraction data. The crystal is triclinic, space group P-1, a = 9.4890(19) A, b = 9.5687(19) A, c = 11.685(2) A, alpha = 84.38(3) degrees, beta = 78.94(3) degrees, gamma = 83.32(3) degrees. The structure of the chelate is dimeric [Zn(BTZ)(2)](2) with two isotropic Zn(2+) ion centers having five-coordinate geometry. The present study provides direct evidence for the sole existence of dimeric structure in the powder and the thin film. The dimer is energetically more stable than the monomer. Analysis of the electronic structure of [Zn(BTZ)(2)](2) calculated by density functional theory reveals a localization of orbital and the distribution of four orbital "tetrads". The structural stabilities of both anion and cation and the distribution of the hole in the cation and that of the excess electron in the anion are discussed in terms of theoretical calculations. Strong intermolecular interaction may be expected to enable good electron transport properties as compared with tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum.

Wideband true-time-delay beam former that employs a tunable chirped fiber grating prism.

A fiber grating prism that consists of four tunable chirped-grating delay lines for wideband true-time-delay beam forming is proposed and demonstrated. The chirped gratings are produced by use of the grating bending technique in which a uniform grating is surface mounted on a simply supported beam. We obtained chirped gratings with different chirp rates by bending the uniform gratings with different beam deflections. Four linear chirped fiber gratings with identical spectral width but linearly increased grating length are fabricated. The spectra and time-delay responses of the tunable chirped gratings are measured. A chirped-grating prism for wideband true-time-delay beam forming by use of four chirped gratings is constructed and tested experimentally. We obtained different time delays by tuning the wavelength of the optical carrier. The proposed true-time-delay beam former with a four-element phased-array steerer is suitable for continuous beam forming at microwave frequencies up to 20 GHz.

Synthesis and self-assembly of 2,9,16-tri(tert-butyl)-23-(10-mercaptodecyloxy)phthalocyanine and the application of its self-assembled monolayers in organic light-emitting diodes.

2,9,16-Tri(tert-butyl)-23-(10-mercaptodecyloxy)phthalocyanine (8) and its disulfide (9) have been synthesized and characterized, and their self-assembling behaviors on gold substrates have been studied. Characteristic Q-bands were observed at about 630 nm in the UV/visible spectra of the self-assembling monolayers (SAMs). They were broadened and blue-shifted relative to those observed in solution. Binding energies for S2p have the same values (161.70 eV) and are in accord with those for gold thiolates. The application of the SAMs in organic light-emitting diode was investigated. It shows that the SAM promotes the hole injection process from the anode.

A perfect carbon nanotube with two closed ends.

A perfect carbon nanotube with two closed ends consisting of graphitized carbon was experimentally observed. The large carbon nanotube, with a diameter of 187 nm and a length of 1.2 microns, was synthesized by pyrolysis of iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) under an Ar/NH3 flow at 900 degrees C on a nickel substrate. The structure and composition of the nanotube were determined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The carbon nanotube seems to grow spontaneously by some autocatalytic process.
