The plasminogen activator of the arterial wall.

The plasminogen activator in 645 specimens of various human arteries--thoracic, abdominal aorta, carotic, pulmonary, renal, basilar, coronary - was studied using Todd's histochemical method. 92 cadavers were used, 1--18 hours post mortem from subjects aged from 272 days to 83 years. 45 specimens of pulmonary, renal and splenic arteries were obtained during surgery. The greatest fibrinolytic activity was within the adventitia. Intima occasionally showed very little fibrinolytic activity, or none at all. No statistically significant differences in plasminogen activator activity were found between the various arteries examined. A statistically significant increase in fibrinolysis in adventitia of atherosclerotic arteries was established. No correlation was found between the fibrinolytic activity of the arteries and their alkaline phosphatase content. Some properties of the plasminogen activator of the arterial vessel wall were evaluated. Influence of storage, inactivation with epsilonaminocaproic acid and extracted with potassium thiocyanate was studied.

Determination of alpha-amylase activity in duodenal contents with the blue starch polymer.

The use of the blue starch polymer (Phadebas tablets) for the determination of duodenal alpha-amylase is described. 0.05% bovine or human albumin solutions are necessary for dissolution of substrate tablets as well as for dilution of duodenal contents. Concentration and output values of duodenal amylase before and after cholecystokinin-pancreozymin and secretin stimulation display a close correlation of the chromogenic and saccharogenic method. The average error of duodenal alpha-amylase in parallel examinations is low with both methods and their relative accuracy is practically the same. The chromogenic method is considered more simple and rapid.

Chemotherapy of advanced malignant lymphomas comparative evaluation of results with single agent and combination therapy.

86 patients with advanced malignant lymphomas (stage III and IV) were treated either with Vinblastine given as a single agent (49 cases) or with combination chemotherapy MOPP or COP (37 cases). In both, Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, induction of remission, relaps-free survival and prognostic significance of initial clinical stage were evaluated, in relation to the therapeutic modality. In patients with Hodgkin's disease, combination chemotherapy was found to produce significantly more durable remissions, when compared with single agent therapy. However, difference in the response rate, which was found to be more effective following the combination chemotherapy, was not statistically significant. In patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas overall lower response was recorded, regardless of the therapy applied. In all patients, better response rate and longer lasting remissions correlated with initial stage III.
