Origins and mobility of phosphorus forms in the sediments of Lakes Taihu and Chaohu, China.

Phosphorus release from the sediment is generally an important factor for lake eutrophication. We have investigated phosphorus forms in surface sediments from Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu by a chemical extraction method. The results showed that the concentrations of Fe/Al-bound phosphorus (Fe/Al-P) and organic phosphorus (Org-P) had significant correlations with those of amorphous Fe/Al oxides and organic matter in the sediments. Furthermore, Ca-bound phosphorus (Ca-P) concentrations were well related to total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations. The results also indicated that higher pH weakened the association of phosphates with the Fe/Al hydroxides and then resulted in Fe/Al-P release. The increase of pH was companied with autogenetic progresses of calcium carbonate and then elevated Ca-P concentrations in the sediments. In conclusion, external P loadings determine spatial distribution of P fractions, especially Fe/Al-P and Org-P, and partially contribute to additional Ca-P fractions in these highly human-disturbed lakes. The pH-induced phosphorus mobility in the sediments is very important for these lakes.

Long-term curative effects of combined hepatocholangioplasty with choledochostomy through an isolated jejunum passage on hepatolithiasis complicated by stricture.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocholangioplasty combined with choledochostomy was designed through an isolated jejunum passage in 1988. This study was undertaken to evaluate its long-term curative effects in 163 patients. METHODS: The 163 patients with hepatolithiasis complicated by stricture were treated with this procedure from 1988 to 2003. RESULTS: Among these patients, 19 patients with postoperative hepatolithiasis complicated by acute cholangitis were treated successfully with percutaneous paracentesis drainage through the isolated jejunum passage and without operation, 36 patients had postoperative residual or recurrent stones (35 patients had stones removed through the stoma and one underwent relaparotomy because of stenosis of the common bile duct along with stone in canceration). The clearance rate of stones after the isolated jejunum passage was 97%; 35 patients (21%) complicated with stricture due to hepatolith were treated with combined hepatocholangioplasty and choledochostomy. Follow-up for 1 to 15 years showed no recurrent stricture of the biliary tract. The operation also successfully prevented reflux cholangitis and other serious complications after Roux-en-Y cholangio-jejunostomy. CONCLUSION: Hepatocholangioplasty combined with choledochostomy through an isolated jejunum passage may significantly improve the long-term curative effects of hepatolithiasis with stricture.

Endocrine disrupting effects on Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) fed with field collected Limnodrilus sp.

The potential endocrine disrupting effects and other toxicity effects on aquatic biota resulted from food uptake was simulated by feeding the laboratory cultured rare minnow( Gobiocypris rarus) with field collected Limnodrilus sp. The results indicated that the food chain processes affected significantly the growth, slightly reduced gonadosomatic indices, and elevated hepatosomatic indices. There was an obvious vitellogenin(VTG) induction, which generally only occurred in mature female, in the serum of juvenile rare minnow and mature male when fed with Limnodrilus sp. In addition, the rare minnow feeding on Limnodrilus sp. had significantly high renal indices, it meant obvious renal hyperplasia. The present work suggested that Limnodrilus sp. from field water may contain toxic pollutants and could lead to endocrine disruption effects to the predators. It was concluded that endocrine disruptors may not only be assimilated through water, but also be bioconcentrated through food web. The results also suggested the importance of food selection in conducting the study of endocrine disruption effects using sensitive species.

Phosphine in various matrixes.

Matrix-bound phosphine was determined in the Jiaozhou Bay coastal sediment, in prawn-pond bottom soil, in the eutrophic lake Wulongtan, in the sewage sludge and in paddy soil as well. Results showed that matrix-bound phosphine levels in freshwater and coastal sediment, as well as in sewage sludge, are significantly higher than that in paddy soil. The correlation between matrix bound phosphine concentrations and organic phosphorus contents in sediment samples is discussed.
