Phosphine in various matrixes.

Abstract

Matrix-bound phosphine was determined in the Jiaozhou Bay coastal sediment, in prawn-pond bottom soil, in the eutrophic lake Wulongtan, in the sewage sludge and in paddy soil as well. Results showed that matrix-bound phosphine levels in freshwater and coastal sediment, as well as in sewage sludge, are significantly higher than that in paddy soil. The correlation between matrix bound phosphine concentrations and organic phosphorus contents in sediment samples is discussed.

Teleost lincRNAs: Functional roles, regulatory mechanisms, and future applications in aquaculture.

Long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) regulate gene expression across vertebrate physiological systems, yet their functional roles in teleost fish remain incompletely synthesized. This review systematically integrates current evidence through PRISMA-guided searches across PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, identifying ten lincRNA-focused functional studies with genetic, mechanistic, or developmental validation, complemented by twenty two supplementary contextual references. Findings span development, immunity, environmental adaptation, reproduction, regeneration, and toxicology, with each association graded as experimentally validated, bioinformatically predicted, correlational, or speculative. This synthesis offers three core contributions. First, it shows that cis-acting regulation on neighboring genes, mediated through Wnt, NF-κB, and AHR signaling, is the dominant validated lincRNA mechanism across teleost physiological domains. Second, it demonstrates that direct experimental validation, primarily via CRISPR-Cas9 and chromatin-capture assays, remains concentrated in zebrafish, whereas aquaculture-species associations remain largely correlational. Third, it identifies two findings that challenge current lincRNA classification: unexpected regulatory directionality at the slincR-sox9b locus, and micropeptide-encoding potential within annotated lincRNAs. Together, these contributions establish an evidence-graded foundation for future mechanistic studies and translational aquaculture applications.

Molecular characterization of Vibrio harveyi bacteriophages isolated from aquaculture environments along the coast of India.

Seven bacteriophages specific to Vibrio harveyi, the causative agent of luminous vibriosis in shrimp, were isolated from coastal aquaculture systems like shrimp farms, hatcheries and tidal creeks along the east and west coast of India. All the seven phages were found to have the typical head and tail morphology with double-stranded DNA as genetic material. Morphologically, six phages were grouped under family Siphoviridae and one under Myoviridae. These phages were further characterized with respect to host range, morphology and structural proteins. Genomic fingerprinting was carried out using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Major capsid proteins of all the phages detected by SDS-PAGE were distinct from one another. All the phages were found to be highly lytic for V. harveyi and had different lytic spectrum for the large number of isolates tested. Six of the seven phages isolated had a broad lytic spectrum and could be potential candidates for biocontrol of V. harveyi in aquaculture systems.

Confronting the realities of wastewater aquaculture in peri-urban Kolkata with bioeconomic modelling.

Wastewater reuse for aquaculture is a reality in several Asian countries, however, traditional practices face constraints including inadequate or contaminated wastewater inputs and growing concern over health risks. Based on Kolkata and a wastewater flow of 550,000m(3)d(-1), rational and conventional designs for lagoon-based wastewater treatment and reuse through aquaculture were compared using bioeconomic modelling. Outcomes showed the rational design required a larger area than the conventional or traditional systems, but that financial returns, nutrient retention and fish production were higher; gross fish production employing rational and conventional designs was 45,500 and 11,560t, respectively. However, limited land availability and constraints to reconfiguring the existing system make implementation of the rational design unlikely. Findings suggest traditional practices could be enhanced by adopting wastewater treatment prior to reuse, modifying fish production strategies, and monitoring to safeguard health. Bioeconomic modelling constitutes a useful tool in comparing treatment and reuse options, permitting the sensitivity of financial returns to changing costs and recent revisions to WHO guidelines for safe wastewater reuse to be assessed, however, social and environmental consequences demand consideration.
