Abstract

George Langill, MHA, executive director of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, spoke at the 1990 CHAC Administrators' Seminar in Toronto. Langill addressed the issue of sponsorship and passing on mission values to future lay leaders from the point of view of a lay administrator.

Antecedents and outcomes of abusive supervision: test of a trickle-down model.

The authors examined antecedents of abusive supervision and the relative importance of interactional and procedural justice as mediators of the relationship between abusive supervision and the work outcomes of affective organizational commitment and individual- and organization-directed citizenship behaviors. Data were obtained from subordinate-supervisor dyads from a telecommunication company located in southeastern China. Results of moderated regression analysis revealed that authoritarian leadership style moderated the relationship between supervisors' perceptions of interactional justice and abusive supervision such that the relationship was stronger for supervisors high rather than low in authoritarian leadership style. In addition, results of structural equation modeling analysis revealed that subordinates' perceptions of interactional but not procedural justice fully mediated the relationship between abusive supervision and the work outcomes. Implications for future investigations of abusive supervision are discussed.

Whiteness and difference in nursing.

This paper uses a semiotic, performative theory of language and post-colonial theory to argue that nursing's representations of 'multiculturalism' need to be grounded in a theory of whiteness, an historicized understanding of how ethnic/cultural differences come to be represented in the ways they are and informed by Foucault's notions of power/knowledge. Using nursing education and 'cultural compentency' as examples, the paper draws on a range of literatures to suggest more critical and politically productive ways of approaching difference from within nursing's largely white interpretive framework.

Friedman's corpus since his anatomy: a psychoanalytic odyssey.

Lawrence Friedman is a preeminent theorist, critic, and commentator in American psychoanalysis today. The major themes of his work, beginning with his magnum opus, The Anatomy of Psychotherapy (1988), are examined in an effort to identify conceptual shifts and problems in contemporary psychoanalysis. In the years since publication of that work, Friedman's texts have increasingly focused on the epistemological controversies faced by contemporary psychoanalysts. He has become a vocal critic of recent developments in relational psychoanalysis, advancing views that are explored here and subjected to critical appraisal. To better understand Friedman's ideas, areas of disagreement with other authors, including Schafer, Renik, Hoffman, Mitchell, Rorty, and Michels, are explored. Finally, Friedman is presented as a crypto-intersubjectivist whose work effects a realignment of theory with practice.
