Abstract

Public hospitals, the "safety net" for the poor and uninsured, are typically overwhelmed and under-reimbursed, but some have managed to stay out of the red. What's their secret? An analysis conducted for Modern Healthcare shows what profitable public hospitals have in common, and some of the steps administrators are taking to offset the burden of indigent care.
